Ethiopia Reviews 15 Years of Field Epidemiology Training as Country Marks World Field Epidemiology Day ------------------------------- Ethiopia has marked World Field Epidemiology Day with the dissemination of a 15-year impact evaluation of the Ethiopian Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (EFELTP), highlighting the program’s contribution to strengthening the country’s capacity to detect, investigate and respond to public health emergencies. The national event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI). It brought together senior government officials, representatives of regional health bureaus, academic institutions and international development partners to review the program’s implementation from 2009 to 2024 and discuss priorities for its next phase. The event also provided an opportunity to recognize the contribution of field epidemiologists working across Ethiopia and examine measures to further strengthen the country’s public health security. State Minister of Health Dr. Dereje Duguma said the EFELTP has played an important role in developing Ethiopia’s public health workforce, with more than 800 field epidemiology specialists graduating from the program and serving within the national health system. Dr. Dereje emphasized the need to build a proactive and agile health system capable of detecting disease threats at an early stage, conducting field investigations and implementing timely interventions. He identified the expansion of digital disease surveillance, improved integration of health data and sustainable financing as key priorities for strengthening Ethiopia’s health security architecture. Dr. Getachew Tollera, Deputy Director General of EPHI, underscored the role of field epidemiologists in responding to disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies. He reaffirmed EPHI’s commitment to expanding field epidemiology training capacity, strengthening regional field bases and improving the integration of laboratory networks with field-based surveillance systems across the country. Ato Assegid Samuel, Lead Executive Officer of the Human Resources Health Development and Innovation (HR HDI) Directorate Director of the Ministry of Health and EFELTP Program, said the 15-year milestone provided an opportunity to assess the program’s achievements, identify remaining gaps and determine whether its current approach continues to respond to the evolving needs of Ethiopia’s health sector. Dr. Ebba Mijena, CEO of Higher Education Academic Affairs at the Ministry of Education, highlighted the importance of collaboration between the education and health sectors in developing Ethiopia’s public health workforce. And mentioned the ongoing higher education reforms, including greater autonomy for public universities, provide an opportunity to strengthen specialized and research-oriented training aligned with national public health priorities. Representatives of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (US CDC), the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) and Resolve to Save Lives also delivered keynote addresses, highlighting technical collaboration and continued support for strengthening Ethiopia’s field epidemiology capacity. The event featured the presentation of the EFELTP Impact Evaluation Results Evidence Brief, 2009–2024, alongside a poster exhibition showcasing field investigations and scientific contributions by program participants and alumni. Stakeholder panel discussions also examined lessons from the program’s first 15 years and priorities for its future development. The gathering concluded with commitments from the Ministry of Health, EPHI, Ministry of Education and partner organizations to advance several priority areas, including expanding university-based field epidemiology training, strengthening digital disease surveillance, enhancing public health preparedness and pursuing international accreditation for Ethiopia’s field epidemiology programs.

Five African Nations Launch 'MUKET' Project to Strengthen AI-Enabled Early Warning for Arboviral Diseases ----------------------------------- Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Uganda have launched the MUKET Project, a regional initiative aimed at developing an artificial intelligence-enabled early warning system for emerging and re-emerging arboviral diseases. The initiative, convened by the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) through its Research Directorate, brought together public health leaders and researchers from the five countries to align research priorities, assess technical capacity and establish a framework for regional collaboration. The project, formally known as “Climate-Informed One Health Surveillance and AI-Enabled Predictive Early Warning for Emerging and Re-emerging Arboviral Diseases in Africa”, seeks to integrate human, animal, vector, genomic, climate and environmental data to improve the prediction and response to diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever. During the virtual meeting Dr. Getachew Tollera, Deputy Director General of EPHI, emphasized the need for African countries to strengthen proactive health security measures against growing arboviral threats. He noted that these diseases can have broader consequences for maternal and child health, food security and economic resilience, while climate change, flooding and drought can further increase the risks. Dr. Getachew stressed that the scale and complexity of these threats cannot be addressed by a single institution or country. He described MUKET as an African-led effort that will bring together local data, scientific expertise and technological capacity to address regional health challenges. He called for a shift from conventional surveillance toward “active health intelligence, outbreak anticipation and timely public health action”, enabling countries to identify risks earlier and respond before outbreaks escalate. Prof. Aster Tsegaye from the Ministry of Health stressed that infectious diseases and their vectors cross national borders, making regional cooperation essential. She also called for stronger implementation of the One Health approach and greater involvement of social scientists in understanding community values, culture and behavior during public health responses. The National Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Technical Advisor and ccoordinator of the MUKET Project, Dr. Eshetu Gadisa from EPHI, presented the vision, rationale, objectives and strategic value of the initiative. His presentation highlighted the importance of climate-informed One Health surveillance and the use of artificial intelligence and predictive technologies to strengthen early detection and response to arboviral disease threats across Africa. The MUKET Project will use artificial intelligence, machine learning and geographic information systems to develop models capable of forecasting the timing and location of arboviral disease risks. It will also strengthen laboratory and genomic capacity to characterize pathogens, trace viral lineages and detect emerging changes.

Ethiopia Achieves Historic Milestone as First Civilian EMT Classified in WHO African Region ----------------------------------- National Emergency Medical Team (EMT) receives World Health Organization (WHO) Classification for Type 1 Fixed EMT, Strengthening Ethiopia’s Emergency Response Capacity Ethiopia has achieved a historic milestone in emergency medical response after its National Emergency Medical Team successfully obtained international classification from the WHO, becoming the first civilian EMT in the WHO African Region to be classified as a Type 1 Fixed Emergency Medical Team. The landmark achievement places Ethiopia among the pioneers in strengthening standardized emergency medical response capacity in the African Region, alongside Senegal’s military EMT, which has also achieved WHO classification. Prior to the verification, Ethiopia’s National EMT achieved a 96 out of 96 score against the WHO African Region EMT implementation framework, demonstrating its preparedness and compliance with the required standards. The team has evolved from Ethiopia’s Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), established in 2018, into a nationally structured emergency medical response team. The achievement was officially recognized during a ceremony jointly organized by the Ministry of Health and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) on September 15, 2026 in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia’s National EMT has already demonstrated its ability to respond to diverse emergencies and operate in challenging environments. Its previous deployments include the Gamo Zone landslide response in southern Ethiopia and emergency response activities related to Marburg Virus Disease, providing practical experience in rapid deployment, clinical care, coordination, and emergency operations. The development and strengthening of Ethiopia’s National EMT has been led by the Ministry of Health and EPHI, with technical and operational support from WHO, UK-Med, European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), and partners of the Global EMT Network. Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba emphasized that in an era of escalating global crises, standardized emergency preparation is essential, attributing the success to dedicated local responders and international partners including the WHO, UK-Med, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), and the Spanish EMT. Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Dereje Duguma on his behalf commended the dedication of the clinicians, nurses, logisticians, and specialists who form the backbone of the team. The Director General of EPHI Dr. Mesay Hailu affirmed that the independent verification solidifies EPHI’s vision of serving as a continental center of excellence following its centennial, while Dr. Melkamu Abte, Dupty Director General of EPHI noted that the classification builds on the team's evolution since 2018—from its origins as a Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) responding to major mass casualty events and landslides to a fully integrated national and subnational emergency response architecture. Speaking for the global body, Prof. Francis Chisaka Kasolo commended Ethiopia’s sustained investment and leadership, noting that the country now sets a benchmark for thirty other African nations currently establishing national EMT units. The achievement further strengthens Ethiopia’s role in the regional and global EMT community ahead of the 7th EMT Global Meeting, scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa from November 3–5, 2026. The meeting will be particularly significant as it will be the first global EMT meeting to be hosted in the WHO African Region.
