He was a Ukranian eparch and martyr. He belonged to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church which is in communion with Rome. He strongly condemned the anti-religious beliefs of the communists. He also resisted the order of the communist government to separate the Ukrainian Church from the Roman Church. The Soviet government arrested him for this and he was exiled to Kazakhstan. He worked for the Christianization of his country. He introduced German priests into his realm and favored the Latin rite over Slavonic. He was killed for political reasons, but normally listed as a martyr since the politics arose from his faith. | 258 |
