THE FRANCISCAN DOCTORS OF THE CHURCH --- Among the 38 saints proclaimed as Doctors of the Church, three come from the Franciscan Order. St. Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, the Doctor Seraphicus (Seraphic Doctor), was promoted Doctor in 1588. St. Anthony of Padua and Lisbon, the Doctor Evangelicus (Evangelical Doctor), was promoted Doctor in 1946. And St. Lawrence of Brindisi, the Doctor Apostolicus (Apostolic Doctor), whose memorial we celebrate today, was promoted Doctor in 1959.

JULY 21: SHE COLLECTED THE BLOOD OF THE MARTYRS Saint Praxedes of Rome Virgin and Martyr Died: 165 --- She was a Roman virgin and martyr. She was the daughter of St. Pudens and St. Claudia, and was the sister of St. Pudentiana. She was wealthy. Their house served as a Church. She helped in administering Baptism among the people. She also secretly buried the bodies of the Christian martyrs and piously collected their blood with a sponge as a form of respect, as seen in the painting. She also joined the ranks of the martyrs.

JULY 21: MARTYR ACCUSED OF DEFILING BRIDES Saint Alberico Crescitelli Priest and Martyr Died: 1900 --- He was an Italian priest of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions who was martyred in China. During the Boxer Rebellion, he was beaten almost to death. The following day, he was dragged with his feet bound up to the river, where, torn to pieces, he was finally beheaded. The Chinese government accused him of defiling women about to be married, taking the “right of the first night.” Investigations later proved that this was not true.

SAINT NEWS!!! New Beatification Schedule Set!!! Martyrs of Santander --- The beatification of the Ven. Francisco Gonzalez de Cordova and 79 companions will take place on November 7 in the Cathedral of Santander, Spain. All the 80 martyrs were Spanish men who were killed during the anti-Catholic Spanish Revolution. 67 of them were diocesan priests, 1 was a Discalced Carmelite priest, 2 were Discalced Carmelite brothers, 3 were seminarians, and 7 were laypersons, 3 of whom were married.

JULY 20: SHE USED HER BODY TO SHIELD A PRIEST Saint Zhu Wu Mali (Mary) Married Layperson and Martyr Died: 1900 --- Saint Mary Zhu Wu was a Chinese married layperson. She lived during the anti-Catholic Boxer Rebellion in China. When the rebels attacked her village, she took refuge in the Church with many Catholics and 2 Jesuit priests: St. Leon-Ignace Mangin and St. Paul Denn. When the rebels broke into the Church, they intended to shoot Fr. Mangin. She stood up, and with her outstretched arms, tried to protect the priest. She was shot to death.

JULY 20: MARTYRED "DAUGHTERS" OF A FILIPINA Blessed Rita of Our Lady of Sorrows and Blessed Francisca of the Heart of Jesus Religious Virgins and Martyrs Died: 1936 --- They were both Spanish nuns and martyrs. They were members of the Sisters of Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a congregation established by a Philippine-born woman – Ven. Isabel Larrañaga. Rita’s original name was Rita Josefa Pujalte Sanchez. Francisca’s original name was Francisca Aldea Araujo. Both were arrested and shot during the anti-Catholic Spanish Civil War.

LEGEND OF THE BEARDED FEMALE SAINT --- In folk hagiography (lives of the saints), there is a female “virgin martyr” who, supposedly, miraculously grew a beard in order to evade marriage. She is Wilgefortis. She is often depicted dressed as a woman with a mustache and a beard while crucified. Though some venerate her, she is NOT a canonized Catholic saint. There is no historicity to her story. Her name was removed from the Roman Martyrology and her cult suppressed. Other Christian Churches also do not venerate her as a saint.

LEO XIII AND CONFIRMATION OF CULTUS --- Confirmation of Cultus is a decree where a person is recognized as a beatus or a saint without undergoing the standard canonization procedures, but relying on an existing, long-standing public veneration of the individual, often for centuries, and the belief that they lived a life of heroic virtue or died a martyr. Pope Leo XIII, whose death we commemorate today, holds the record of having confirmed the cultus of most people: 175 people. He holds the record of having proclaimed the most number of saints via confirmation of cultus: 72 saints (with one cultus later suppressed). He, however, follows Bl. Pius IX in having proclaimed the most number of beati via confirmation of cultus. Pius IX proclaimed 109 beati while Leo XIII proclaimed 104 beati.
