| 3 | In one of his many works, ibn al-Qayyim wrote: 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to prohibit writing the Prophet's statements out of fear that the people would be preoccupied with them to the exclusion of the Qur'an.
So then, what about when one sees the people being preoccupied with their own opinions, the mush of their own viewpoints, and the rubbish of their own minds to the exclusion of focusing on the Qur'an and Sunnah? And it is Allah Whose aid we seek!
['Ilam al-Muwaqqi’een 4/286] | 472 |
| 4 | Allah commands near the end of surah Hud:
[وَلَا تَرْكَنُوا إِلَى الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا فَتَمَسَّكُمُ النَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ اللَّهِ مِنْ أَوْلِيَاءَ ثُمَّ لَا تُنصَرُونَ]
"And do not incline towards those who do wrong lest the fire should touch you and you would not have any protectors besides Allah and you would receive no aid." [11:113]
Commenting on this, sheikh 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'di wrote: This ayah contains a warning against inclining towards any wrongdoer, and meaning of al-rukoon - "inclining" - is inclining towards and joining in together with someone in their wrongdoing, approving of them doing that, and being pleased with the wrongdoing that they are doing.
So if this threat of punishment is just for inclining towards wrongdoers, then what about the situation of the wrongdoers themselves!?
We ask Allah to keep up safe from wrongdoing.
[Taysir al-Karim al-Rahman pg 450] | 645 |
| 5 | Allah mentions a number of beautiful qualities of His devoted servants at the end of surah al-Furqan, beginning by describing them as:
[وَعِبَادُ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا]
"And the servants of al-Rahman are those who walk on the earth with humility and when the ignorant ones addressed them, they say words of peace." [25:63]
In his explanation of this passage, sheikh 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'di explained that the type of servitude here involves worshiping Him alone, and He then said: Allah linked this type of servitude to His Name al-Rahman to show that they were only able to reach this level due to His mercy.
[Taysir al-Karim al-Rahman pg 686] | 810 |
| 6 | After mentioning the early part of Ibrahim's life and his separation from his people in surah al-'Ankaboot, Allah then said: "And We gifted him Ishaq and Ya'qub, and We placed prophethood and scripture among his offspring ..." [29:27]
Sheikh 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'di wrote: "and We placed prophethood and scripture among his offspring" as a result of which every prophet that came after him was one of his offspring, and every scripture was revealed to one of his offspring until finally the line of prophethood ended with the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessing be on all of them).
And this is one of the greatest features and points of pride, that the substance of guidance, mercy, ultimate joy and true success were placed with his offspring and that it was through their hands that the guided ones were guided, the believers believed, and the righteous ones were made upright.
[Taysir al-Karim al-Rahman pg 739] | 897 |
| 7 | In part of his explanation of surah al-Fatihah, al-Biqaa'i wrote: After seeking the noblest path,
one then asks for the best companionship
for Allah said:
"The path of those whom You have blessed ..."
[Natham al-Durar 1/45] | 890 |
| 8 | Visiting A Sick Person & Visiting A Person For The Sake Of Allaah
From Abu Hurairah who said that the Messenger of Allaah [ﷺ] said: ❝Whoever visited a sick person or his brother for the sake of Allaah a voice will say: may you be good and your life be good in the Dunya [worldly life] and hereafter, and may you be given a home in Paradise.❞
[Collected By Tirmidhi | Authenticated By Al-Albaani In Saheeh Al-Jamia, (No. 6387)] | 973 |
| 9 | In surah al-Kahf, Allah describes part of the journey of Moosaa and his servant boy in search of al-Khadhr by saying:
[فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَا قَالَ لِفَتَاهُ آتِنَا غَدَاءَنَا لَقَدْ لَقِينَا مِن سَفَرِنَا هَٰذَا نَصَبًا ]
"Then when they had gone too far, he said to his servant boy, 'Bring our morning meal. We have certainly experienced exhaustion on this journey of ours." [18:62]
In one of his writings, ibn al-Qayyim commented on this by writing: When Moosaa was traveling to al-Khadhr, he experienced hunger and exhaustion on the way, so he told his servant boy, "Bring our morning meal. We have certainly experienced exhaustion on this journey of ours." That is because he was traveling to a created being.
However, when his Lord appointed thirty nights for him and then completed them with another ten, during this time he did not eat anything, however he did not feel any hunger or exhaustion. That was because he was traveling to his Lord.
Likewise with the heart's journey to its Lord. It will not experience any of the sorrow or toil that one experiences when traveling to one of the created beings on that journey to its Lord.
[Bada'i al-Fawa'id 3/721] | 1 033 |
| 10 | At the end of surah al-Hashr, Allah mentions a series of His beautiful names and then says:
[لَهُ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ]
"To Him belong the most beautiful names" [59:24]
Imam al-Sa'di wrote: "From the their beauty is that Allah loves them, and He loves those who love them. And He loves those of His slaves who call on Him and ask Him with them."
[Taysir al-Kareem al-Rahman pg. 1007] | 999 |
| 11 | Allah says in surah al-Rum [30]:
[وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ]
"... and establish the prayer and don't be one of the mushrikoon." [31]
Al-Qurtubi wrote: Allah makes it clear here that worship does not bring about any benefit unless it is done with ikhlas (exclusive devotion to Allah). That is why He said, "And don't be one of the mushrikoon".
[Jaami' li-Ahkam al-Qur'an 14/30] | 1 093 |
| 12 | Ibn Abi Haatim recorded ... that Abdullah ibn Mas'ood said:
The most comprehensive ayah in the Qur'an is:
[ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ]
"Allah commands you with justice and goodness ..." [al-Nahl 90]
And the most reliving ayah in the Qur'an is:
[وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُ مَخْرَجًا]
"And whoever has taqwa of Allah, Allah will make a way out for him." [al-Talaq 2]
[Tafsir ibn Kathir 8/146] | 1 116 |
| 13 | In one of his lessons, sheikh Muhammad ibn 'Uthaymeen said:
[قال الله ﷻ :{أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ هَدَى اللَّهُ ۖ فَبِهُدَاهُمُ اقْتَدِهْ} قال : " بهداهم "- ولم يقل : " بهم " لأن العبرة بالمنهج لا بالاشخاص . ـ]
Allah said:
"Those are the ones whom Allah has guided, so follow their guidance" [al-An'aam 90]
Allah said, "follow their guidance", not "follow them". That is because the factor that deserves attention is principles, not personalities.
[Sharh al-Mumti' 4/379] | 1 123 |
| 14 | Abu'l-'Aliyah said: A man said to Ubay ibn Ka'b, "Advise me."
Ubay said, "Take the Book of Allah as a leader. Make yourself pleased with whatever it decrees and legislates. For it is what your Messenger has left behind for you. It is an intercessor, something to be obeyed, and a witness whose testimony is beyond reproach. It contains mentions of you and those who came before you, rulings for what goes on between you, and information about you and about those who will come after you."
[Siyar A'lam 1/392-393] | 1 101 |
| 15 | Allah says in surah al-Zumar [39]:
[إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُم مَّيِّتُونَ * ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ تَخْتَصِمُونَ]
"You will die and they will die * then on the Day of Resurrection, you will take up your arguments before your Lord." [30-31]
Ibn 'Umar said: We have lived for a while, and we used to think this ayah was in reference to what was between us and the Jews and Christians
"Then on the Day of Resurrection, you will take up your arguments before your Lord."
and we said: how could we argue among ourselves when our religion and our Book is one? I continued to think that until I saw some of us striking the faces of others with swords, at which point I understand that this ayah was referring to us.
Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri said about this ayah: We used to say, "We have one Lord, one religion and one Prophet, so what is this there for us to argue about?" Then when the Day of Siffeen came and we were fighting one another with swords, we said, "Yes, this is it."
Ibrahim said: When this ayah was revealed, the Sahabah said, "How could we argue with each other when we are brothers?" Then when 'Uthman was killed, they said, "This is our arguing."
[Tafsir al-Baghawi 7/119] | 1 147 |
| 16 | 'Abdullah ibn 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr said: I asked my grandmother Asma' bint Abi Bakr, "How did the Companions of the Messenger of Allah behave when the Qur'an was recited to them?"
She replied, "They were just as Allah has described them: their eyes would shed tears and their skins would shiver.
'Abdullah said: So I said, "There are some people today who, when the Qur'an is recited to them, they will fall unconscious."
She replied, "I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed shaytaan."
[Tafsir al-Baghawi 7/116] | 1 091 |
| 17 | Allah says in surah al-Zumar [39]:
[قُلْ إِنَّ الْخَاسِرِينَ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ وَأَهْلِيهِمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۗ أَلَا ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ الْخُسْرَانُ الْمُبِينُ]
"Say: The losers are those who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Certainly that will be a manifest loss!" [15]
al-haafidh ibn Kathir wrote: "those who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection" - meaning: they will be separated, never to be together with them. That is the case regardless of whether their family goes to Jannah and they go to the Hellfire or whether all of them will reside in the hellfire. Whatever the case, they will not be together nor will they have joy.
[Tafsir ibn Kathir 7/90] | 1 164 |
| 18 | Allah describes the Qur'an in surah al-Baqarah [02] as:
[وَهُدًى وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ]
"... and as a guidance and a glad tiding for the believers." [97]
Qatadah said: That is because when the believe hears the Qur'an, he memorizes it and stores it away, and he benefits from it and finds peace in it. He affirms in what Allah has promised within it, and have complete certainty about those promises.
[Tafsir al-Tabari 2/394] | 1 174 |
| 19 | Near the beginning of surah al-Baqarah [02], Allah calls out to the people by saying:
[يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اعْبُدُوا رَبَّكُمُ]
"O mankind, worship your Lord ..." [21]
Sheikh Salih al-Fawzan said: “Tawheed is the most important thing we have been commanded to implement, for Allah began with it for the first call found in the mushaf"

| 20 | In surah al-Talaq, Allah informs us that:
[وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بَالِغُ أَمْرِهِ ۚ قَدْ جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدْرًا]
"And whoever places their reliance on Allah, then He will be sufficient for him. Allah certainly makes His commands a reality. Allah has set a measure for everything." [03]
Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned a beautiful point related to the arrangement of the three sentences within the above ayah when he said: “When Allah mentioned that He will take care of those who place their reliance on Him, perhaps someone would incorrectly understand that to mean that Allah will take care of him as soon as he places his reliance on Him, so Allah then followed up that phrase by saying:
[ قَدْ جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدْرًا]
"Allah has set a measure for everything"
meaning: a time beyond which a thing will not last. So Allah will take a thing on its path until it reaches the end time that He set for it.
So the person who places his reliance on Allah should not be impatient and say, "I have placed my reliance on Allah and made du'a to Him but I haven't seen anything change and I haven't found myself being taken care of!" for Allah certainly makes His command a reality at the time that He has set for it to happen.”
