The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of India’s first commercial-scale Coal-to-Ammonium Nitrate Project at Lakhanpur, Jharsuguda (Odisha), marking a major step towards energy security, import substitution, and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. 📍 Key Highlights: ✅ The ₹25,016 crore project will convert coal into synthesis gas (syngas) to produce ammonium nitrate using indigenously developed coal gasification technology by BHEL. ✅ The project is being developed by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd. (BCGCL), a joint venture of BHEL and Coal India Ltd. A PIB highlights GST’s evolution, major reforms under GST 2.0, and its contribution to India’s tax system and economic formalisation.  📍 Key Highlights:GST, launched on 1 July 2017, subsumed 17 taxes and 13 cesses, creating a One Nation, One Tax regime and a unified national market.  ✅ GST 2.0 (2025 reforms) streamlined the tax structure to two principal slabs (5% & 18%), introduced a 40% tax on luxury and sin goods, and simplified compliance and refunds for businesses.  ✅ Major relief measures include higher exemption limits, QRMP Scheme, Composition Scheme, simplified registrations, faster refunds, and reduced compliance burden for MSMEs and startups.  ✅ GSTN, AI, machine learning, e-invoicing, and data analytics have strengthened tax administration, improved compliance, and enabled risk-based monitoring.  ✅ GST taxpayers increased from 66.5 lakh (2017) to 1.65 crore (May 2026), while annual GST collections rose from ₹7.4 lakh crore (2017–18) to ₹22.27 lakh crore (2025–26), reflecting greater economic formalisation.  📍 Challenges / Issues / Implications: ✅ Ensuring revenue neutrality while rationalising tax rates and exemptions. ✅ Further simplifying compliance for small businesses and reducing litigation. ✅ Expanding the tax base while maintaining cooperative federalism through the GST Council. ✅ Mains Question (GS III | 250 Words): Evaluate the impact of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on India’s economy over the past nine years.
