🔆 DAANVEER: Strengthening Digital Infrastructure in Gram Panchayats
📍 Why in News?
🟢 The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has launched DAANVEER, a people-led Computer Crowdsourcing Initiative to strengthen digital infrastructure in Gram Panchayats.
🟢 It enables individuals and organisations to donate desktop computers directly to verified Gram Panchayats through the Meri Panchayat App.
📍 What is DAANVEER?
🟢 A technology-enabled, transparent and citizen-centric initiative for voluntary contribution to grassroots digital infrastructure.
🟢 It complements government-supported infrastructure under programmes such as Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA).
🟢 Citizens can support their own or any eligible Gram Panchayat requiring computers.
📍 How Does It Work?
🟢 Open the Meri Panchayat App.
🟢 Select a State-verified Gram Panchayat requiring a computer.
🟢 Click “Donate Computer”.
🟢 Donor is automatically redirected to DigiHaat, an ONDC-enabled digital marketplace, without separate registration.
🟢 Select from standardised computer bundles meeting prescribed technical specifications and make digital payment.
🟢 Delivery details are auto-populated and the entire process can be tracked from purchase to delivery and acknowledgement.
🟢 After acknowledgement by the Gram Panchayat Secretary, the donor receives a digital Certificate of Appreciation.
📍 Significance
🟢 Strengthens Panchayats’ capacity for digital governance, planning, financial management, record-keeping and citizen service delivery.
🟢 Promotes participatory governance by allowing citizens, CSR organisations, philanthropists and the Indian diaspora to contribute directly to grassroots institutions.
🟢 The model enhances transparency and accountability through end-to-end digital tracking.
🟢 As of 27 August 2026, 75 donations had already been made.

🟢 PIB released a backgrounder on India’s sugar industry and the recent rise in sugar prices.
🟢 India is the world’s 2nd-largest sugarcane producer, supporting nearly 5 crore farmers and around 5 lakh workers.
📍 Key Facts
🟢 Sugarcane production reached 500 MMT in 2025-26, up from 348.44 MMT in 2015-16.
🟢 India produces around 300–340 LMT sugar annually, while domestic consumption is around 280–290 LMT.
🟢 FRP for 2026-27: ₹365/quintal.
📍 Why have Sugar Prices Increased?
🟢 Price rose from ₹48.18/kg (20 July 2026) to ₹55.70/kg (20 August 2026) — around 15.6% rise.
🟢 Lower-than-expected production.
🟢 Red Rot & Top Borer diseases and waterlogging due to excess rainfall.
🟢 Festive-season demand.
🟢 Rising global sugar prices and tightening global supplies.
🟢 Speculation and hoarding.
📍 Ethanol–Sugar Link
🟢 Sugar diverted for ethanol declined from 12% in 2022-23 to around 9% in 2025-26.
🟢 Nearly three-fourths of India’s ethanol now comes from grains, particularly maize.
🟢 Hence, the recent sugar price rise cannot be attributed primarily to ethanol diversion.
📍 Government Measures
🟢 400-tonne stock limit on sugar dealers till 30 November 2026.
🟢 Bulk consumers restricted to 15 days’ consumption stock from September 2026.
🟢 Physical verification of sugar stocks to check hoarding.
🟢 10 LMT duty-free raw sugar imports permitted.
🟢 Crushing season advised to begin from 15 October 2026.

🟢 The Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List at the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.
🟢 With this, India’s total UNESCO World Heritage properties have risen to 45.
📍 About Sarnath
🟢 Located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites associated with the life of Gautama Buddha.
🟢 It is the place where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon in the 6th century BCE.
🟢 The sermon is known as Dharmachakra Pravartana or the “Turning of the Wheel of the Law”.
🟢 It marked the beginning of the Buddhist Sangha and establishment of the principles of the Noble Eightfold Path.
