🔆 INDIA INTERNATIONAL WATER WEEK 2026 | WATER SECURITY 📍 IIWW 2026 🟢 9th edition of the India International Water Week (IIWW) is being held from 22–26 September 2026 in New Delhi. 🟢 Organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. 🟢 Theme: “Climate Resilient Water Management.” 🟢 Around 150 countries have been invited, with 11 countries expected as partner countries. 🟢 The programme includes 49 focused sessions, including ministerial plenaries, a youth forum and start-up forums. 📍 Seven Sub-Themes 🟢 Inclusive & Equitable Water Governance 🟢 Collaboration for Optimal Use of Water Resources 🟢 Technology & Community for Water Security 🟢 Water in Climate-Related Risk 🟢 Innovative Financing Models for Water Infrastructure & Modernization 🟢 Sustainable Water Resources Management 🟢 Water for People & Planet 📍 Key Government Initiatives 🟢 Jal Shakti Abhiyan 🟢 Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain 🟢 Atal Bhujal Yojana 🟢 Mission Amrit Sarovar 🟢 Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari – community-led conservation 🟢 NAQUIM 2.0 – scientific inputs for area-specific groundwater management. 🟢 Total annual groundwater recharge increased from 432 BCM (2017) to 448.52 BCM (2025). 📍 Community Recharge – Chhattisgarh 🟢 In Balod district, 2.84 lakh recharge structures were created between June 2025–May 2026 under Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari 2.0. 🟢 Structures include check dams, recharge pits and contour trenches. 🟢 The 14.3-km Tawera Nala was rejuvenated with 6,250+ water conservation structures. 🟢 Expected additional rainwater conservation: 6.5 crore litres. 🟢 Estimated groundwater-level improvement: 5–10 feet. 📍 Women as Water Managers – Tripura 🟢 In Khowai, more than 6,000 SHG women are involved in community mobilisation. 🟢 Through School Water Clubs, SHG women train students in basic water-quality testing using Field Testing Kits (FTKs). 🟢 Geo-tagged monitoring, third-party quality audits and DWSM/DISHA meetings strengthen accountability. 🟢 All 860 Anganwadi centres in the district have rainwater-harvesting structures. 📍 River Rejuvenation – Uttar Pradesh 🟢 Under “Dhara se Dharohar Tak”, the Ban River was revived across nearly 42 km. 🟢 The Sot River was restored across around 17 km. 🟢 The approach has also extended to the Malan River in Bijnor and Hiranyavati River in Kushinagar. 🟢 Gram Sabha monitoring, Pani ki Pathshala and women-led water-quality testing strengthen community participation. 📍 Catch the Rain – Odisha 🟢 Through Catch the Rain 2026, educational institutions are teaching students about groundwater science, hydrological processes and rainwater harvesting. 🟢 Odisha conducted 968 IEC activities using street plays, folk performances and community programmes. 🟢 905 rainwater-harvesting/recharge structures were created: 849 rooftop harvesting structures + 56 recharge shafts. 🟢 98 tanks across all 30 districts have been taken up for renovation and desilting. 📍 UPSC Mains Question 🟢 “Water security requires a shift from infrastructure-centric approaches to community-led, scientifically informed and climate-resilient water management.” Discuss with reference to India’s recent initiatives. #Environment
