📍 Why in Focus?
PIB released a backgrounder highlighting how the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is creating a standardised template for future bullet train corridors, promoting indigenous manufacturing and expanding India’s high-speed rail network.
📍 Key Highlights:
✅ MAHSR is India’s first bullet train corridor (508 km), using Japanese Shinkansen technology, with a design speed of 350 kmph and operational speed of 320 kmph. Travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will reduce to about 1 hour 58 minutes.
✅ A standardised engineering template (common designs for piers, viaducts, tracks, stations, signalling and electrification) is being developed to reduce costs, improve quality and accelerate future high-speed rail construction.
✅ Under Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, ICF and BEML are developing indigenous 280 kmph trainsets, while Indian industries are localising components, slab-track systems and specialised equipment.
✅ The corridor features J-Slab ballastless tracks, 2×25 kV traction system, 12 stations, 3 rolling stock depots, and over 20,000 OHE masts. The first section (Surat–Vapi) is expected to open in August 2027.
✅ India has identified 7 future High-Speed Rail Corridors (nearly 4,000 km, estimated investment ₹16 lakh crore) including Delhi–Varanasi, Chennai–Bengaluru, Mumbai–Pune and others to build a national high-speed rail network.
📍 Challenges / Issues / Implications:
✅ High capital investment and long project gestation periods.
✅ Need for technology transfer, localisation and skilled workforce development.
✅ Ensuring timely land acquisition, financing and coordination across future corridors.
✅ Mains Question:
“High-Speed Rail can act as a catalyst for economic growth, regional connectivity and industrial development. Discuss with reference to India’s High-Speed Rail programme and the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project.” (GS III, 250 Words)

| 20 | 🔆 Breakthrough in Bi-metallic Superalloy Manufacturing through Additive Manufacturing
📍 Why in Focus?
Researchers at ARCI, Hyderabad (an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology (DST)) have developed a crack-free bi-metallic structure using laser-based Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB/M) additive manufacturing, which can reduce India’s dependence on imported nickel-based superalloys.
📍 Key Highlights:
✅ Technology: Uses Laser-based Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB/M) to integrate SS316L stainless steel with IN718 (Inconel) nickel-based superalloy into a single high-performance component.
✅ Achievement: Developed a crack-free, porosity-free interface with ~310 HV interface hardness and 550 ± 30 MPa Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS), demonstrating superior mechanical integrity.
✅ Strategic Significance: Enables selective use of costly superalloys, reducing material costs and India’s import dependence while improving manufacturing efficiency.
✅ Applications: Suitable for aerospace, nuclear reactors, thermal & ultra-supercritical power plants, heat exchangers, boiler tubes, and oil & gas processing industries requiring both corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength.
✅ Research Output: Published in the journal Progress in Additive Manufacturing, showcasing India’s growing capabilities in advanced manufacturing and materials science.
📍 Challenges / Issues / Implications:
✅ Conventional joining of dissimilar metals often leads to cracking, porosity, and brittle intermetallic compounds due to differences in thermal and chemical properties.
✅ Scaling laboratory innovation for industrial production requires investment in advanced manufacturing infrastructure and skilled manpower.
✅ Indigenous development of strategic materials is essential for Aatmanirbhar Bharat, especially in defence, aerospace, and energy sectors.
✅ Mains Question:
“Discuss the role of additive manufacturing and advanced materials in strengthening India’s strategic manufacturing capabilities. How can indigenous innovations reduce import dependence in critical sectors?” (GS III, 250 Words)
