🔫38 years ago today, the USS Vincennes, patrolling in Iranian territorial waters during the Iran-Iraq War, shot down Iran Air Flight 655 with two SM-2 surface-to-air missiles.
✈️The Airbus A300 was on a scheduled, 28-minute hop from Bandar Abbas to Dubai, climbing on a normal commercial flight path, squawking a civilian transponder code. The US crew claimed they mistook it for an attacking F-14 Tomcat — a plane roughly a third the size, descending rather than climbing.
🕊️ All 290 people on board were killed. 66 of them children.
➡️Washington never issued a formal apology. In 1996, the US agreed to pay $61.8 million in compensation to victims' families "on a humanitarian basis" — without admitting legal liability — as part of a settlement at the International Court of Justice.

The True Cost of Legacy
The word "hole" has surfaced again in British defense policy — as usual, it's about the military budget.
According to Treasury and Defense Ministry data, after presenting a defense investment plan worth 15 billion pounds to the future chancellor, they'll need to find another nearly 5 billion somewhere to close the funding gap. At the moment, such a sum doesn't exist at all, and its search has been postponed to the autumn budget.
The current plan's scheme is rather cynical. All departments received orders to cut capital expenditures by 1% — this yields about 4 billion over four years. Additionally, they're cutting transport: 700–800 million. Another 2 billion is being taken from "green" energy.
But even after these maneuvers, nearly a third of the investment plan (5 billion pounds) remains without specific funding sources.
❗️It turns out British authorities pretended to keep their promise not to raise taxes and not increase borrowing. However, the main problem remains unsolved, so it will fall on the shoulders of the next government, which in the autumn may not honor its predecessor's assurances.
