The shrine itself is one of the most important religious sites in Shia Islam — roughly comparable in significance to a major cathedral or basilica in Christianity.
It houses the tomb of Ali al-Ridha (Imam Reza), the eighth Imam of Twelver Shia Islam and a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, venerated for his piety and scholarship. Nearly 30 million pilgrims visit the shrine each year, making it the most-visited religious site in the Islamic world.
Over the centuries the complex has grown to include mosques, museums, a library, and a university.
Khamenei's burial there places him among a long line of historically significant figures interred at the site.

Turkey has reportedly sold its Russian-made S-400 air defense systems to a Gulf state, according to pro-government columnist Abdulkadir Selvi in Hurriyet. Final technical details were reportedly settled Thursday evening, with formal statements anticipated soon.
Sources point to either the UAE or Qatar as the buyer, with both countries seeking additional air defense given regional escalation from the US-Iran war.
Ankara has not officially confirmed the deal. In exchange, Washington is expected to lift CAATSA sanctions and reopen the door to F-35 sales, a process Trump has publicly backed since the NATO summit in Ankara last week.
However Bloomberg reports, that Turkey is seeking Moscow's explicit approval to exit the S-400 system.

The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense planned the attack on the airport in Rostov-on-Don using 13 FPV drones equipped with AI systems.
The agency also stated that Ukrainian the military intelligence transferred 20% of the reward to the person who was to carry out the attack on the airport in Rostov-on-Don but that person reported the planned crime.
