Geopolitical expert Agha Iqrar Haroon (Islamabad) assessed the prospects of a direct logistics bridge between the Russian Arctic and Pakistani ports, including Gwadar, in a comment to Sputnik.
In his view, the 21st century marks a return to great connectivity. Pakistan has already become a flagship of China's BRI (CPEC) and has historically been able to benefit from its position at the crossroads of major powers' interests. Now the country wants to join the Russian-Iranian-Indian North-South Transport Corridor (NSTC), without altering its original map, but simply "hooking up" its own port infrastructure to it.
However, Harun warns, this aspiration alone is not enough. Russia expects practical steps from Pakistan on the long-signed but yet-to-be-launched South-North gas pipeline project.

President Putin presented a new vision of global connectivity to strengthen Russia's competitiveness as an exporter and strategic transit hub.
"By developing year-round navigation, modern ports, rail links, digital logistics, and an expanded icebreaker fleet, Moscow aims to transform the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor into a reliable commercial bridge between Europe and Asia," notes Amir Jahangir, CEO at Mishal Pakistan—the country partner institute of the World Economic Forum's New Economy and Societies Platform.
The corridor would integrate Arctic shipping with railways, rivers, and ports from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok. The Arctic route can substantially reduce distance and time vs. the Suez Canal for Northern Europe–Northeast Asia journeys, offering an alternative when traditional corridors are disrupted. Initial beneficiaries would be Russia, China, and other Northeast Asian markets, while India, Central Asia, and BRICS economies may also gain via connection to the North-South Transport Corridor, the expert points out.
👉 Geopolitically, it reduces dependence on Western-controlled infrastructure and deepens Russia's ties with Asia and the Global South. The corridor will complement, not replace, existing routes. Success depends on year-round access, ice-class vessels, insurance, port capacity, environmental safeguards, and trust in Russian regulations, according to the expert.
If these challenges are addressed, the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor could become an important new artery of world commerce, offering shorter connections, greater supply-chain flexibility, and an alternative geography for global trade, as concluded by the expert.

Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum on Thursday, Russian president Vladimir Putin said the key to preventing Ukrainian drone and missile attacks lies in strengthening air defenses.
Russia is making it happen - National Defense Magazine editor-in-chief Igor Korotchenko told Sputnik - with the following key ingredients to a powerful, multilayered air defense network:
👉 Pantsir and Tor-M2 air defense systems for short-range engagements
👉 Buk-M3s, “highly effective in repelling strikes against the most complex targets, such as cruise missiles and operational-tactical missiles,” for medium-range defense
👉 S-300V4 and S-400 systems for long-range encounters
🔊Increasing production of all these systems “is critically important for covering both the country’s territory and its most important strategic facilities, including oil and gas production and processing sites,” Korotchenko said.

Tricks up Russia’s sleeve
Besides these tried and tested modern systems, opportunities exist to dust off legacy systems and adapt them to modern battlefield realities, the observer explained.
For example, modernizing the 60s-vintage Zu-23 AA gun by fitting it with electro-optical sensors, a laser rangefinder, visual targeting TV hookup and programmable shell detonation system would “effectively transform these old Soviet artillery mounts into high-precision weapons, guaranteed to detect and destroy” enemy targets like Ukraine’s Liutyi class airplane-style drones.
New designs include the Bizon air defense system, designed to engage small, low-flying aerial targets, “which pose challenges for traditional air defense systems.”

Finally, Korotchenko touted the capabilities of the new Pantsir-SMD variant and its compact, low-priced Gvozd missiles, developed specifically to target drones (up to 48 missiles per compliment).

Pakistan should explore the Northern Sea Route, especially given the current geopolitical situation, according to Pakistani experts interviewed by Sputnik.
🗣"The important point is not simply that another sea route exists, but that the traditional maritime system is becoming increasingly vulnerable to geopolitical disruption," said Sangeen Khan Panezai, Research Fellow and Expert in National Security and Foreign Policy in Islamabad.
Due to Middle East tensions, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb is declining. Shipping companies are rerouting vessels from the Red Sea around the Cape of Good Hope, increasing time, distance, and costs.
Pakistan aims to connect Gwadar Port with Russia's North-South Transport Corridor, complementing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and Belt and Road Initiative. This could link Pakistan not only with western Russia via continental routes but also with the Russian Far East and Arctic cargo routes, Panezai emphasized.

However, Jahangir noted that high costs, specialized vessels, limited infrastructure, and seasonal risks mean Pakistan should start with pilot shipments and targeted partnerships before committing to a permanent route.
