The problem with your comfort zone is that it’s comfortable 🛋️ I know because I spent a good few years in mine. Life was good. I was earning reasonably well, I had a young family, and things were comfortable 📈 I wasn't particularly unhappy and I certainly wasn't sitting there thinking I needed to completely change my life. Then I made an investment which was beyond my financial tolerance 💸 What started as one mistake sent me into a financial downward spiral and suddenly that comfortable life wasn't quite so comfortable anymore 📉 At the time, it felt like a disaster. Looking back, it was probably one of the most important things that happened to me 🌟 Because it forced me out of the chair. I had to think differently. Work harder. Take some risks. Learn new things. Build businesses. Make more mistakes and eventually create a very different life 🚀 I'm not suggesting you need to lose money or manufacture a crisis to get yourself moving. Quite the opposite. My mistake was waiting until life pushed me out of my comfort zone rather than choosing to leave it myself 🚪 Failure gets a lot of attention because it's painful. Comfort can be just as dangerous because it isn't. Stay in the chair too long and eventually you start growing roots🪸

Your ‘ideal self’ is a concept articulated by personal construct psychology which basically says, if you don’t have a representation of how you most want to be, you’re not going to end up their accidentally. The best possible self needs to be someone you can articulate, see, feel understand in order to claim. There is this amazing TedTalk titled, very aptly, Your real vs. ideal self that I really think you should listen to that essentially discusses how this exercise helps you bridge the gap between who you are and the person you want to be. Each one of you has 15 minutes tonight to try this. And if you’re really struggling with feeling detached, listen, at MOST, it can’t hurt, and personally, I found it really motivating and grounding for the new year.

Talk about life changing micro changes – I started junk journalling after my friend Sally recommended it to me. I had this conversation with her middle of last year where I was said something along the lines of: “I don’t know who I am without my phone”. It’s basically journalling on easy mode – you just collect junk (receipts, labels, stickers, train tickets) whatever it is from your day, get a glue stick, paste it in a journal and write small comments about it. Easy. But great results. What I’ve seen is that we find our personality through this process because we add narrative back in. It’s a core premise of narrative psychology – we like when something has a story to it that we can reflect on, including our lives. Journalling in whatever form you choose, does that for us. We can coherently draw lines between our thoughts and experiences we can observe ourselves past and present, see patterns in behaviour, notice things about who we are when we are the specimen, we are the subject under the microscope and that helps us recognise parts we may be missing, dare I say, avoiding. Journalling is very much like a mirror, I think that’s why it’s such a well-worn, tested therapy or self-help method, because it just lets you see yourself without the frills you put on for other people. With the junk journal – you literally see yourself through garbage, junk, trash. And so it’s raw , and as a bonus, which was why I started in the first place – it’s gets your out of your fucking phone. If you want to get your personality back, and yes I said this before, you’ve got to stop consuming and start creating. There’s the famous saying “you are what you eat”, you are also the digital world and content you ingest. Consumption is like feeding your brain artificial stuff all day, creation is like feeding it organic strawberries and vegetable and delights. It thrives. Tip number 6: get your friends and families opinion (of you)… If you don’t know who you are anymore: your friends and family probably do. Start asking them: “What song reminds me of you, what movie?” “What was I like as a child?” “What is your favourite memory of us together?” “What do you think my biggest skill is, my biggest weakness?” “What are some words you would use to describe me?” Guess what: this may feel awkward at first, and then it will feel amazing. This tip works because of one of the oldest ideas in social psychology, Charles Horton Cooley’s “looking-glass self. He concluded that our identity is partly a reflection, partly our decision. When you ask people questions like “What song reminds you of me?” or “What was I like as a child?”, you’re accessing what psychologists call reflected appraisals: information about yourself that exists outside your own internal narrative. It’s like accessing memories stored safely away in a vault, not affected by the ups and downs of your current state. There’s also strong evidence from self-verification theory that we seek feedback from others to stabilise our sense of identity. When we feel unsure of who we are, external perspectives help anchor us. Friends and family often notice patterns we’ve normalised or forgotten - strengths, tendencies, past - this is how you get them back. My final tip: write out a ‘person I want to be’ letter. So I did this the other day, because I was feeling, as you can probably tell, slightly unmoored. I was in a hotel room and, feeling inspired by the new year and a bit scared. I sat down, and wrote five large themes for the person I most wanted to be; the version of myself I most admired. I used ‘I’ statements: I am someone who really takes care of myself. I am someone who others find kind and welcoming. I am someone who is surrounded by friends. I also wrote out how I imagined that looked like, tangibly. We’ve focused a lot on reclaiming the personality of the past, but finding yourself again also means thinking about your future, ideal self.

What you’re experiencing is the psychological power of novelty, specifically a new environment. There is this fantastic series of research by the researcher David Gonzalez and his team between 2016-2022 which essentially explored the importance of novelty for our memory, neurons and, crucially, for our personality. They found that, when looking at thousands of people, those who had novel experiences, put themselves in new environments, tried new things – food, music, movies – were much happier and also had a deeper sense of personal alignment. For example, one 2017 study observed production workers who were given novel tasks once a shift, they found they had more grey matter in their brains afterwards compared to those who did not have an unfamiliar problem to solve. Grey matter is essentially for daily functioning but also memory and emotion. Basically by going out and exploring, seeing beyond ourselves and our daily lives, we are somehow able to know ourselves better. Why is that? Because we continue to make sure their brains were plastic and adaptable. Your brain was built for newness and to see the world and be challenged, taste berries, experience awe when seeing a waterfall, meet new people. When it doesn’t get that I kind of imagine it kind of turns into a zoo animal of sorts, pacing up and down, up and down, it’s cage. Get into new spaces and new environments whenever you can – different routes to work, study in a new library, watch something new at night instead of the same episode of The Office, for the 5th time in a row (guilty as charged). You will literally feel the difference in your wiring as your brain, your mind moves from stagnant, bored, to expansive and curious. Tip number 4: Have a completely unproductive goal and make it really, really random. Totally weird, totally separate from everything else you’re doing in life, a side quest if you will that will take effort and time! Some examples I had in my notebook: Read 5 biographies about artists you admire Memorise all 196 flags Go to every museum where you live before the end of the year Paint portraits for every one of your friends by the end of the year Learn how to make your own clothes Cook through an entire cookbook Befriend a crow Saying it now, I think the core element of this is whimsy and a lack of seriousness, but still a need for trying and striving. All of those goals are achievable with effort, but they also all tap into something we’ve really been discussing this whole episode: a sense of wonder and humanness that we’ve lost. What is the deeper psychological justification for this though? Essentially it’s about diversifying your personality the way people diversify investments, which I know sounds bizarre, but you can’t be defined by one thing and think that will deliver you a happy life. In our 20s particularly, there is this major emphasis on being focused, selective, choosing one path to specialise in – whether it’s choosing a major, choosing a hobby, choosing a literal career path and working it until you retire, basically concentrating your effort on one thing. That may bring results – does it make you feel alive, does it keep you connected to who you are? Let’s be honest, not always. We get that laser focus, and everything else fades away and so what happens when that thing isn’t satisfying anymore, when we want to change, when the main focus drops off? You’re left contemplating who you are and life feels, what’s the best word for this: narrow. That’s why I need you to be collecting side quests. Consider it personality insurance: if the things I typically base my personality on – work, relationships, accolades, praise, passion - fade, become exhausting or don’t inspire anymore, I’ll still know who I am because I am expressing myself elsewhere in a way that feels meaningful and real to me. Tip number 5: start any kind of journal.

How to get your personality back Tip 1: Go back to a simpler time. I read this amazing idea the other day: you didn’t lose your personality, you froze it. Somewhere between childhood, and adulthood, you just suddenly.,.. stopped doing all the things you loved. You played for the last time, you made up imaginary worlds for the last time, you stopped crafting on the weekends. Remember when you were a kid and you’d be like… today is the day I learn how to make lemonade, today is the day I write a song, I go running around with my friends. We don’t do that anymore, we just spend 7 hours a day on TikTok, consuming OTHER people’s lives whilst they perform for us, pretending they have lives of their own. A part of us that used to come alive during those times becomes frozen by inactivity. But what that means is that doing what your childhood or younger self enjoyed most, is probably how you’re going to find a missing piece of your personality. The piece you left back there. This is the case because of the very psychological nature of childhood itself. Knowing so little kept our minds open to so much. Children have a natural curiosity, they also follow the path of natural enjoyment the easiest because there’s less stopping them from doing so. For example, a child who loves art can make art all weekend, and just enjoy it because they don’t have to worry about it being good or getting dinner ready, or how exhausted they are from work, or FOMO. A child who loves reading just feels the positive reward of that, without thinking if there’s something more productive they can be doing. It’s the natural flow of joy, uninterrupted by adult judgements, responsibilities, frustrations, realism, that is WHY we felt most like ourselves when we were small. It really reflects a lot of what we know about inner-child healing and play as a path to authenticity in adulthood. That’s where I need you to return: find an activity you loved as a child and incorporate it into your daily routine. If you want to go even smaller – listen to your favourite childhood music or songs on your way to work, on your commute, or when you cook dinner. Music is actually a deeply emotional trigger and listening to nostalgic music can cue similar mindsets as the time you first heard a song, therefore bringing back that same attitude, spirit, feeling, as back then. As LONG as you make it a priority. Tip number 2: make sure you’re fulfilling one of your core SOUL needs per day. These are the spiritual things you do to fill your cup by feeling human, and when I say spiritual I don’t mean religious, although that can be part of it, I mean stuff that makes you feel like you have energy in your soul and a unique identity. These include: Adventure and curiosity Playing or silliness Being seen & kinship Humour & laughter Deep enjoyment or indulgence in like a meal, the warmth of the sun, an extra 5 minutes in bed Sex or deep physical connection with yourself or others Awe Creating something that didn’t exist this morning Often we lose our personalities because we craft our daily lives to reflect more of that of a machine, and machines don’t have personalities, do they? AI doesn’t have a personality, a truck doesn’t have a personality? How can you expect yourself to if your daily life is get up, plug in, commute, water, eat, operate, produce, output, go home, turn off? There was a recent paper I read about burnout due to monotony. Essentially, as much as routines can be psychologically protective because they provide structure, that very structure can become equally exhausting and destructive. So your soul needs … add them back in. Tip number 3: pursue geographical novelty Do you ever feel like you’re your best self when you’re travelling? Or when you’re on holiday you suddenly have your best ideas? You are much more productive in new environments, after a hike, after you’ve been outdoors?

Publication Overview & Context Identity & Heritage: Established in April 2009 and published by Prologue Burson, What's Out Addis serves as a primary English-language city guide, cultural tracker, and lifestyle magazine for residents, expats, and the diaspora in Addis Ababa. Thematic Focus: The September 2026 issue heavily anchors itself around the Ethiopian New Year (Enkutatash/Meskerem 2019 E.C.), highlighting local heritage, urban development, culinary arts, technological shifts, and the burgeoning creative economy. Key Themes Explored in the Literature Urban Modernity vs. Preservation: Articles like Tesfa Teshome's “Random Observations on the City: We Are Moving Faster Than We Can Feel” capture the psychological and emotional toll of rapid urbanization, commercial acceleration, and corridor developments in Addis Ababa. Meanwhile, historical spotlights—such as Arabella Stewart's piece on the iconic 1952 Tea Room in Piassa—document the preservation of mid-century architecture and social spaces. The Rise of Creative Technology & AI: This issue marks a clear shift toward tech-enabled Ethiopian storytelling. It features Gezahegn Tadesse and MEGA Technologies, an AI startup building heritage-sensitive character development universes (MEGA Toon), reflecting how digital tools are intersecting with local folklore and art. Cross-Border Cultural Pipelines: The magazine highlights significant milestones in regional distribution, such as the Ethiopian International Film Festival (EIFF) partnering with AfroPix to launch the Ethiopian Showcase, alongside regional screenings of East African cinema (like Damien Hauser's Memory of Princess Mumbi via VideoBet). Culinary Arts and Agribusiness: From global representation (such as Chef Fariyal Abdullahi designing menus for United Airlines' Polaris business class) to grassroots agricultural innovation (like EthioChicken's rural empowerment model and OSSO Machinery's locally manufactured coffee roasters in Hawassa), food and agriculture are framed as pillars of national pride and economic resilience. Engaged in reading always!
