📍 Why in Focus?
PIB highlighted India’s progress in combating hepatitis through the National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NVHCP), aimed at eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.
📍 Key Highlights:
✅ Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E viruses. Hepatitis B & C are the leading causes of chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.
✅ National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (2018) provides free screening, diagnostics, and treatment for Hepatitis B & C through a preventive, promotive, and curative approach.
✅ Hepatitis B is covered under the Universal Immunisation Programme, with the birth dose within 24 hours followed by doses at 6, 10, and 14 weeks. Hepatitis C has no vaccine but is curable using Direct-Acting Antiviral (DAA) drugs.
✅ As of March 2026, about 21.06 crore people have been screened, over 6.12 lakh Hepatitis B & C patients treated, and services are available at 1,153 treatment centres across India.
✅ The programme is integrated with the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP), National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP), Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), and Blood Transfusion Services.

📍 Why in Focus?
Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment informed Parliament about measures taken to strengthen the implementation of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, including enhanced financial assistance, victim relief, and institutional support to States and Union Territories.
📍 Key Highlights:
✅ The Central Government is implementing a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) to strengthen enforcement of the Protection of Civil Rights (PCR) Act, 1955 and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, including victim relief and rehabilitation.
✅ Over 1.18 lakh victims received relief under the scheme between 2022-23 and 2024-25, with Central Assistance of ₹392.71 crore (2022-23), ₹535.30 crore 2023-24), and ₹495.29 crore (2024-25).
✅ NCRB (2024) reported 55,685 cases against Scheduled Castes and 9,961 cases against Scheduled Tribes under the Act, while 17,123 SC cases and 7,219 ST cases remained under investigation.
✅ The 2024 conviction rate under the Act stood at 33.9% for cases relating to SCs and 33.2% for STs.
✅ Since Police and Public Order are State subjects under the Seventh Schedule, States are primarily responsible for investigation and enforcement, while the Centre provides financial support and advisories.

✅ The Bill cites Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s statement in the Constituent Assembly (24 January 1950) that Vande Mataram should be honoured equally with Jana Gana Mana
