✅ Researchers from the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) have developed, for the first time, a method to accurately reconstruct the topside ionosphere over the Indian region by integrating ground-based and space-based observations.
📍 What is the Ionosphere?
✅ An ionised layer of Earth’s upper atmosphere that influences radio wave propagation, satellite communication and navigation systems
✅ Extends up to about 1,000 km, where most Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites operate
✅ Variations in electron density affect GPS and India’s NavIC navigation accuracy
📍 Key Innovation
✅ Developed by Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology (DST)
✅ Combines COSMIC Radio Occultation satellite observations with ground-based ionosonde measurements
✅ Produces a more realistic Electron Density Profile (EDP) for the topside ionosphere

Ecological Importance: Lichens are sensitive to pollution and habitat changes, making them useful bioindicators of forest health and environmental quality.
