Foucault’s Visit to McGill University and his meetings with Quebec separatists Stuart Elden and Marcelo Hoffman dive into Foucault's 1971 visit to Montreal Foucault arrived in Montreal only months after the October Crisis of 1970. The crisis was triggered by the separate kidnappings of the British Trade Commissioner James Cross and the Deputy Premier of Québec Pierre Laporte by cells of the Front de libération du Québec (FLQ) in early October. The FLQ sought to use the kidnappings as leverage to force the federal government to meet various demands, including the release of imprisoned FLQ members. The FLQ cell that had kidnapped Laporte executed him a week after his kidnapping. In response to the kidnappings, the federal government invoked the War Measures Act for the first time in peacetime in Canadian history. The Act prohibited the FLQ, suspended civil liberties, and resulted in hundreds of arrests without charges. In December, the House of Commons overwhelmingly passed an emergency powers measure, the Public Order (Temporary Measures) Act, as a replacement for the War Measures Act. The new act remained in place until the end of April 1971. Foucault’s arrival in Montreal coincided with a time when Canada was still experiencing the effects of emergency powers stemming from the October Crisis. It is therefore perhaps unsurprising that he had an interesting political experience in Québec. https://www.versobooks.com/blogs/news/foucault-s-visit-to-mcgill-university-and-his-meetings-with-quebec-separatists

The Poverty of Ethics (Anat Matar).epub

Anat Matar - The Poverty of Ethics The Poverty of Ethics stands the usual moral-political dichotomy on its head. It argues that moral principles do not in fact underlie or inform political decisions. It is, rather, the conceptual primacy of political discourse that rescues ethics from its poverty. Our ethical convictions receive their substance from historical narratives, political analyses, empirical facts, literary-educational models, political activity and personal experience. Yet morality, essentially, doesn’t leave room for relativity: not every ethos deserves to be titles ‘moral’. Hence the book argues further, it is the left ethos, as it has evolved over years, which forms the basis for ethics: morality is left-wing! Clarifying and justifying this seemingly odd statement is the main purpose of this essay. Appealing to philosophical ideas on the essence of language, on meaning, on understanding and persuasion, this book scrutinizes the system of concepts and attitudes informing our common view of the relationship between the moral and the political. It argues that the traditional conception of morality is far too narrow to form a basis for political thought and political action. Its carefully unfolded argument concludes that none of the current philosophical accounts of morality can be translated into terms of political will, much less into direct political action. Being too general and elastic, neither abstract moral principles, ethical-aesthetic sensibilities, nor the ethical demand emanating from an Other, can fulfill these tasks. Instead, the false primacy of the ethical over the political and the infinite flexibility of vacuous moral discourse are often mobilized to launder wrongs and delegitimize radical left politics. Gratification of the moral high ground becomes an implement of de-politicization, and thus a powerful political instrument in the hands of those seeking to shore up the existing order.

Réda Bensmaïa - Gilles Deleuze, Postcolonial Theory, and the Philosophy of Limit Does a philosopher have an 'identity'? What kind of 'identity' is mobilized when the work of a philosopher becomes a major reference for certain schools of thought, as in the case of Gilles Deleuze and postcolonial theory? Have the promoters of a generalized Deleuzeanism taken care their usage of his specialized work does him justice? Few exponents of postcolonial and subaltern theories now dispute the influence that Deleuze's work exerted on the intellectuals and theorists who developed those theories. However, this book contends that postcolonial and subaltern theorists have engaged with Deleuzean thought in ways that have perhaps produced a long series of misunderstandings for which Deleuze himself is not responsible. By engaging with recent innovations in North African culture and by examining the dissemination of Deleuze's identities across a broad range of postcolonial theory, Réda Bensmaïa shows that the 'encounter' between Deleuze and the postcolonial movement can only be understood through the idea of a 'transcendental' field, in which Deleuze and his postcolonial followers find themselves captured.

Michael Principe - Fredric Jameson’s Innovative Marxism Jameson, sometimes slyly referring to himself as a “vulgar Marxist,” sees his project as grounded in the economic base, here characterized as “late capitalism.” Jameson attempts to roughly align himself with Ernest Mandel’s periodization of capitalism, where capitalism can be characterized as moving from market capitalism to the monopoly/imperialism stage to the current stage of late capitalism, characterized by multinational capital and globalization, really the purist form of capitalism with commodification penetrating previously uncommodified areas and to which Marx’s critique straightforwardly applies. To these Jameson aligns his own cultural periodization of realism, modernism, and post-modernism. Crucial to the entire analysis is the idea that culture has become barely distinguishable from economy. https://againstthecurrent.org/atc236/fredric-jamesons-innovative-marxism/

Claude Meillassoux - Maidens, Meal and Money.pdf

Claude Meillassoux - Maidens, Meal and Money: Capitalism and the Domestic Community For over twenty years, Claude Meillassoux has been concerned with the study of the different modes of production which existed in Africa prior to colonisation, and the ways in which they responded to colonisation. In this book Meillassoux draws both on his extensive fieldwork in Africa and on the anthropological literature to provide a detailed theoretical analysis of the self-sustaining agricultural community and its articulation with capitalism through the process of colonisation. Using evidence from the usually separated disciplines of ethnology and economics, he explores the major contradiction created by the persistence within the heart of capitalism of the self-sustaining domestic community as a means of reproduction of labour power, and shows that in fact there is a logical connection between the kinship structures which control reproduction in such communities and the forms of exploitation of workers from groups dominated by imperialism. This book offers the elements both of an advanced theory of the domestic mode of production and of a radical critique of classical and structuralist anthropology. Just as Meillassoux's earlier work, L'Anthropologie iconomique des Gouro de Côte d'Ivoire was received as a 'turning point in the history of anthropology', this study, which goes beyond a discussion of concepts in an attempt to further the practical steps taken by Marx and Engels, represents a major contribution to the contemporary progress of historical materialism.

Cory Doctorow - The Reverse Centaur's Guide to Life After AI: How to Think about Artificial Intelligence Before It’s Too Late As we enter the age of AI, we are in danger of being reduced to what Cory Doctorow dubs the 'reverse centaur'. With that term he conjures a human being conscripted as the assistant to a dominant machine. It could be a driver made to deliver nonstop, all day long; a warehouse worker packing shelves without bathroom or food breaks; or a programmer reviewing impossible amounts of AI-produced code. Don't fall for the hype! The billionaires managing the rise of AI are putting on a command performance for the bosses and investors, not for the ordinary people who might use the products. When this latest tech bubble bursts, will there be something useful for us in the wreckage? In The Reverse Centaur's Guide to Life After AI, Doctorow examines why we find ourselves in this mess and how we can get out of it. Life after AI should mean the tools work for us, not the other way around.

Abigail Susik - Organizing Pessimism André Breton, necropolitics, and 100 years of surrealism. Augmenting the energies of the centennial, last year saw the publication in English of three works by Breton, who died 60 years ago in 1966: Mark Polizzotti’s new translation of the hybrid ode/lament Nadja(1928); Fulgur Press’s much-anticipated edition of Magic Art (1957), rendered by Michael Richardson and Krzysztof Fijalkowski; and Austin Carder’s translation of the posthumously published volume Cavalier Perspective: Last Essays, 1952–1966 (1970), from City Lights Books the latter two works appearing for the first time in English. Translations typically entail a surfeit of love, as these volumes no doubt did, but arriving in this war-torn moment, this moment of resurgent fascism, they feel steeped in pessimism a pessimism with deep roots in surrealist politics. https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/andre-breton-nadja-magic-art-cavalier-perspective-pessimism/

Wally Seccombe - Weathering the Storm: Working-Class Families from the Industrial Revolution to the Fertility Decline The industrial revolution, which transformed 19th-century labour, brought about fundamental changes in the lives of working-class families. This book examines in detail the ways in which large-scale economic changes shape the microcosm of personal life. The industrial revolution which so transformed nineteenth-century labour brought about fundamental changes in the lives of working-class families. In this challenging sequel to A Millennium of Family Change Wally Seccombe examines in detail the ways in which large-scale economic changes shape the microcosm of personal life. Seccombe argues that what we think of as the modern nuclear family only took shape relatively recently: whereas at the beginning of the nineteenth century families tended to contain several earners, it was not until the time of the First World War that the male breadwinner had become the norm. He traces the effects on the family of increasingly centralized manufacture, the separation of workplaces from the home neighbourhood, and the changes in domestic labour brought about by urban housing. And he documents how the introduction of compulsory schooling and the rise of birth control contributed to changes in the dynamic of the working-class family, as children are differentiated from adults and conjugal rights and duties renegotiated. Combining empirical scope with conceptual clarity, Weathering the Storm makes a decisive contribution to the study of family history.

Liberalism or communism? How did we get into this mess, and what politics do we need to get out of it? A Marxist debates with his liberal friend to find answers. Host Barnaby Raine and historian Adam Tooze discuss Marx, Lenin, Keynes and Mao. They talk about how neoliberalism got made, climate politics now from Green New Deals to degrowth, the rise of China and the future of Europe -- before disagreeing on whether genocide in Gaza condemns the whole project of Western civilisation. This is the inaugural episode of postscript, a new podcast from Tribune magazine. Barnaby and Adam start by setting out the project, asking why revolutionary transformation feels so hard to imagine today and how we can inherit radical ideas from lost worlds of the past. А.М.
