| 20 | One way in which the Gospels’ account of the biography of Jesus departs from Middle Platonism is Jesus’ relation to food.
The NT authors and early Church Fathers operated in a milieu where Middle Platonism flourished (1st century BC to 2nd century AD). A hallmark of Middle Platonism is that the material realm is profane and impure. Hence, there is a cosmic struggle between flesh and spirit; Satan is the “god” of this world (Ephesians 2:2); the Logos is the divine mediator between heaven and this fallen world; and the sky is seen as an orderly kingdom. You could think of it as the authors operating within the “science” of their time (in this case, the dominant metaphysical worldview among a certain class in Hellenic culture). The worldview was reinforced by how messed up and evil the world seemed, in a time of brutality, disease, and famine.
But for some reason, Jesus Christ عليه السلام is depicted this way:
“For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.” (Mathew 11:18-19, Luke 7:33-35)
In other words, the Gospels are recording that John the Baptist عليه السلام was, in some ways, more ascetic than Jesus. There is no reason for me to think that the Gospel authors made this crucial detail up, because Jesus is otherwise depicted as a supreme ascetic. The “principle of embarrassment” would suggest that this distinction between John and Jesus — which was serious enough for them to address, and which departs from a Middle Platonic depiction — may just be a window into the historical Jesus.
There are many verses pertaining to food. He has dinner and feasts with the sinners (Matthew 9:10, Luke 5:29), he multiplies the loaves and fish (Matthew 14:19-20), he represents his body as bread and wine in communion (Matthew 26:26-28), he calls himself the bread of life (John 6:35-51), he turns water into wine (John 2:7-9), and two of his post-resurrection appearances involve food (John 21:12-13, Luke 24:41-43).
These could of course be symbolism involving sustenance and plenitude, but still, these instances may reinforce the John-Jesus distinction. Jesus was, apparently, not a total ascetic in all ways — and Allah knows best.
This relates to how we see asceticism in the life of Muhammad ﷺ. Muhammad ﷺ was the most “historical” of all the prophets in that he was the most recent, his biography is the most detailed, he shaped world events in his lifetime and shortly thereafter, paper mills came soon after him, a multitude of epigraphs that mention him can be found; and frankly the prophets of old (pre-John and Jesus) are simply too far in the past for secular historians to even prove their existence.
What we know from the biography of the Prophet ﷺ is that, yes, he was ascetic, but he married (and was even polygamous in the last nine years of his life). He was also a lover of perfumes; he had dyes, etc. He still lived an extremely modest life (especially by today’s standards) — he lived in a small and mostly unfurnished dwelling, he milked his own animals, he fasted many days throughout the year. But he was not a monk, and he opposed monasticism.
This apparent “worldliness” became a point of attack for anti-Islam polemics, which depicted the Prophet as carnal. Premodern polemics especially attacked his marriage to Zaynab (not A’isha), but also the Quranic depiction of Paradise (which has food and sex).
Since Muhammad ﷺ is the most historical of the prophets, his life gives Muslims an impression of what all the prophets were like. They were all men from their communities who came bearing good news and warnings, called people to the one God and to morality, and spoke about the Judgment. | 365 |
