| 9 | So my assessment of Yemen is that
(1) the Houthis / Ansarullah will continue to advance,
(2) Saudi Arabia will increase airstrikes and logistical support for their partners in Yemen,
(3) Pakistan and maybe Turkey will provide more defensive support for Saudi Arabia - I don’t know how involved they will be in the conflict itself,
(4) Despite some alarmists, I don’t think the Houthis will actually invade Saudi Arabia. I think a lot of that talk is just sensationalists who want this war to be about Mecca to provoke a wider Muslim response. Ansarullah’s main focus is Bab Al-Mandab (the coast of the Red Sea) and sustaining their current positions in northern and western Yemen. Some of these positions near Bab Al-Mandab are somewhat fragile. Opening a new ground front would be a huge strategic risk that I think the Houthis are smart enough not to take. But as usual, any increase in Saudi airstrikes will lead to an increase in Yemeni missile strikes on Saudi Arabia, which as we saw this week, can get ugly (not just for ARAMCO oil sites, but they blew up an airbus at the Riyadh airport a couple days ago).
(5) The Houthis have Ta’izz surrounded. Ta’izz is the third largest city in Yemen. They are projected to take it.
(6) The likely scenario in my mind is that the Houthis will advance, and then cut a deal with the Aden government to leave it alone for now.
Now while Saudi Arabia and Iran have their interests in the region, so do other powers like the UAE and Israel. Israel is fine in terms of oil (it gets much of its oil from Azerbaijan through Turkey). The port of Eilat closed, so they’re no longer relying much on Red Sea trade. But Arab and Iranian power weakening in the region is in Israel’s favour. It means they can quietly annex more of Palestine, southern Lebanon, and Syria. It also means that Israel’s future is at less of a threat from some growing Arab economies and militaries. The UAE also probably wants to see Saudi Arabia punished a bit.
The US is no longer dependant on Middle Eastern oil, but they know that many Asian economies are. They don’t mind throwing those economies under the bus for now, and then maybe making a deal to sell them Venezuelan oil in the future. So as far as they’re concerned, let those Tusken Raiders kill each other, let Israeli regional hegemony grow, and let’s dominate the oil market in the future. This is something I hope both sides (Saudi Arabia and Iran) realize before long. The situation in Yemen can be worked out if they try. | 325 |
