It is narrated that Ali عليه السلام said,
“He who awakens sorrowful over worldly affairs has awakened displeased with God’s decree. He who awakens complaining of a calamity that has befallen him has awakened complaining against his Lord. He who approaches a wealthy person and humbles himself because of his wealth has lost two-thirds of his religion. He who recites the Qur’an, then dies and enters the Fire, is among those who treated God’s signs as mockery. And he whose heart becomes passionately attached to the love of this world will find his heart fastened to three things: anxiety that never leaves him, greed that never releases him, and hope that he never realizes.”
مَنْ أَصْبَحَ عَلَى الدُّنْيَا حَزِيناً فَقَدْ أَصْبَحَ لِقَضَاءِ اللهِ سَاخِطاً، وَمَنْ أَصْبَحَ يَشَكُو مُصِيبَةً نَزَلَتْ بِهِ فَقَدْ أَصْبَحَ يَشْكُو رَبَّهُ، وَمَنْ أَتى غَنِيَّاً فَتَوَاضَعَ لِغِنَاهُ ذَهَبَ ثُلُثَا دِينِهِ، وَمَنْ قَرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ فَمَاتَ فَدَخَلَ النَّارَ فَهُوَ مِمَّنْ كَانَ يَتَّخِذُ آيَاتِ اللهِ هُزُواً، وَمَنْ لَهِجَ قَلْبُهُ بِحُبِّ الدُّنْيَا الْتَاطَ قَلْبُهُ مِنْهَا بِثَلاَثٍ: هَمٍّ لاَ يُغِبُّهُ، وَحِرْصٍ لاَ يَتْرُكُه، وَأَمَلٍ لاَ يُدْرِكُهُ.
