What makes people *really* angry is when they are blamed for doing something good. For that reason, before you rebuke anyone, always try to understand their intentions. | 202 |

| 8 | Even as one who isn’t a follower of Imam Khamanei, and one who questions the theory under which he governed (Wilayatul Faqih), and is a critic of some aspects of Iranian domestic and foreign policy, I can appreciate the uniqueness of his murder and funeral.
This was one of the few Muslim heads of state that was a traditionally-trained mufti. This was one of the few clerics that was killed directly by the Judeo-Christian world superpower. This was the only head of state to be killed directly by a foreign army in wartime in the twenty first century. And this appears to be the largest funeral in history.
Some of his enemies (namely the Epstein class, the Pahlavists, and ISIS) were among the proudest and most visibly villainous people in history.
Both critics and supporters will have to reckon with these facts for future generations to come. | 257 |

| 14 | Last one from Balaghat al-Nisa (“The Eloquence of Women”) by Ahmad b. Abi Tayfur (d. 893 AD). This one shook me to my core. It is the speech of Her Majesty Umm Kulthūm the daughter of Ali and Fatima, after she was taken captive after the Battle of Karbala, when she was taken to Kufa in Iraq.
The narrator says:
When the women from Karbalāʾ were brought into Kūfa, ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn عليه السلام was frail, having been greatly weakened by illness. The women of Kūfa had torn their garments in mourning for al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī عليه السلام.
Then ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn عليه السلام raised his head and said: "Yet these women are weeping! Then who was it that killed us?"
I then saw Umm Kulthūm عليها السلام. By Allah, I have never seen a more modest and dignified woman speak than she. It was as though the words of the Commander of the Faithful ʿAlī عليه السلام were flowing from her tongue. She gestured to the people to be silent.
When every breath became still and the bells fell quiet, she began: "I begin with the praise of Allah, and with blessings and peace upon my grandfather. As for what follows: people of Kūfa! People of treachery and betrayal! May your tears never cease, and may your cries never be stilled! Your likeness is that of the woman who, after spinning her thread firmly, unraveled it again into loose strands. You use your oaths as instruments of deceit among yourselves. What is there among you except arrogance, enmity, the flattery of slave women, the taunting of enemies? You are like luxuriant pasture growing upon a heap of filth, or like a whitewashed grave concealing corruption beneath it. How evil is what your own hands have sent before you! The wrath of Allah has come upon you, and in the punishment you shall abide forever. Do you weep? Yes, by Allah – weep! For you are indeed deserving of weeping. Weep much and laugh little, for you have earned everlasting shame and disgrace. Never shall you wash it away. How could you ever cleanse yourselves after killing the descendant of the Seal of Prophethood, the very fountain of the Message, the Master of the Youths of Paradise, the beacon of your guidance, the pillar of your proof, and the refuge in your calamities? Ruin and destruction be upon you! Your efforts have come to nothing, your bargain has failed, you have incurred the wrath of Allah, and humiliation and misery have been imposed upon you. You have committed an enormity so monstrous that the heavens are on the verge of splitting apart because of it, the earth of bursting open, and the mountains of crumbling into dust. Do you realize what piece of the heart of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم you have wounded? What noble member of his household you have exposed? What blood belonging to him you have shed? You have committed a deed hideous beyond measure, so monstrous that it fills the Earth and the heavens. Are you astonished if the sky rains blood? Yet the punishment of the Hereafter is even more humiliating, and they shall not be helped. Do not let the respite granted to you deceive you. Allah is not driven by haste, nor does He fear that vengeance might escape Him. Surely, your Lord is ever lying in wait for both us and you."
Then she turned away from them.
The narrator said: "I saw the people standing bewildered, biting their fingers in remorse. Then I saw an old man from the tribe of Banū Juʿfī whose beard had become soaked with tears. He was saying:
Their elders are the noblest of elders,
and their descendants—
whenever lineage is reckoned—
are a line that neither perishes nor is ever disgraced." | 342 |

| 16 | In Balaghat al-Nisa (“The Eloquence of Women”) by Ahmad b. Abi Tayfur (d. 893 AD), it is reported that Her Majesty Zaynab bint ‘Ali عليها السلام said, after being taken prisoner to the court of Yazid in Damascus after the Battle of Karbala,
“O Yazīd! Surely the end of those who committed evil was that they denied the signs of God and mocked them.
Do you imagine, O Yazīd, that because you have confined us to the ends of the earth and the horizons of the sky, so that we are driven along as captives are driven, that we have become insignificant before Allah while you have become honoured in His sight? Do you think this is because you possess great worth before Him?
So you have become arrogant, holding your head high and looking about yourself with delight and satisfaction, rejoicing because you see the world yielding to you and your affairs proceeding smoothly, your authority firmly established, and you have been granted respite and time.
Yet Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has said: 'Let not those who disbelieve think that Our granting them respite is good for them. We only grant them respite so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment.' (3:178)
Is it justice, O son of the freed ones, that you keep your own wives and slave women secluded while you parade the daughters of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), after tearing away their veils and exposing their faces, driving them from town to town under the escort of their enemies? They have no one to protect them or shelter them. They are stared at by those both near and far, by those present and absent, while none of their men remain to defend them. All who look upon them do so with eyes filled with hatred, rancor, and malice.
I say this to you: if today you regard us as spoils of war and count our captivity as your gain, you will soon find it to be a grievous loss. That will be on the Day when you find nothing except what your own hands have sent forth, and Allah is never unjust to His servants.
To Allah alone we make our complaint, and upon Him alone we rely. So devise whatever schemes you can, strive with all your effort, and exert all your strength. By Allah, you shall never erase our remembrance, nor extinguish our revelation, nor attain our true rank. Nor will you ever wash away the disgrace of this deed. Your judgment is nothing but folly, your days are numbered, and your gathering will be scattered on the Day when the caller proclaims: Surely, the curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers.'
Praise be to Allah, who brought the first of us to a blessed end through happiness and forgiveness, and the last of us to a blessed end through martyrdom and mercy. We ask Allah to perfect their reward, to grant them even greater bounty, and to make us worthy successors to them. Truly, He is Most Merciful, Most Loving. Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs." | 367 |
