Before social media this was also true, but not as ubiquitous.
For my generation, the decline in discourse and the rise of irreverent, idiotic-yet-popular takes started with Jon Stewart and The Daily Show. That show did tremendous damage. Alex Jones destroyed many minds as well, but from a different angle.
Now we live with the consequences of those shows and the many copycats of them. The online and media spaces pursue attention and revenue—not clarity, not truth.
Discourse, as a means of sorting differing perspectives and information in order to arrive at an understanding, let alone a point of agreement, is extremely rare.
