"The Experience of No-Self"
by Bernadette Roberts
The book is not a guide to attaining realization. It is a
careful description of what remained after the sense
of being a separate "I" unexpectedly fell away.
Roberts explains that this transition was not one of
continuous bliss or ecstasy. Instead, it involved a
profound and often difficult readjustment. Without the
familiar center of self-reference, life continued, but in
an entirely different way. Perception became
immediate and ordinary, free of the constant
commentary of a separate observer.
One of her central insights is the distinction between
consciousness and self-consciousness.
Consciousness remains fully present, but the reflexive
sense of "me" standing apart from experience
disappears.
She also describes this as a long process of
acclimatization rather than a dramatic ending. There
can be confusion, vulnerability, and a sense of living
without the psychological structures that once
organized experience. Rather than portraying
realization as permanent emotional bliss, Roberts
presents it as a radical simplicity in which life unfolds
without a personal center.
Throughout the book, she emphasizes that the
disappearance of self does not produce an
extraordinary state. Instead, it reveals an utterly
ordinary reality, one so simple that it is easily
overlooked.
The Experience of No-Self stands out because of its
honesty. Roberts gives voice to a dimension of
realization that many mystics hint at but rarely
describe in detail: the quiet, often challenging process
