Why is the US upping stakes in race for critical metals like copper, cobalt amid military buildup? The US tried to derail the sale of a Congolese copper mine to a Chinese company, the FT reported. US officials reportedly pressured DRC state miner Gรฉcamines to review the sale between Trafigura-backed Chemaf Resources and China's Norin Mining, reflecting the ruthless race for critical metals as the US scrambles to replenish its depleted weapons stockpiles. The production ramp-up is mineral-intensive: for example, replenishing the US arsenal with 155-millimeter rounds requires huge amounts of copper. Last year, the US also reportedly considered buying cobalt for its defense stockpiles. What drives the hunger for copper and cobalt? Copper has high ductility, flexibility, thermal and electrical conductivity, and corrosion resistance. It is used with other metals to make super alloys. ๐Ÿ”ถ World copper reserves are estimated at 886 million tons. ๐Ÿ”ถ Chile had the largest global copper reserves in 2022 with 190 million tons - 21% of the world total. world total. ๐Ÿ”ถ Cobalt is a 'critical raw material', the vast majority of which is produced as a by-product from copper and nickel mines. It is a key component of the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs). The Democratic Republic of Congo is the largest contributor of mined cobalt - 76% in 2023 (170,000 MT). Cobalt, like copper, is used in high-temperature alloys that are widely used in the defense industry for ๐ŸŒ Aircraft and aerospace components ๐ŸŒ Missile defense systems ๐ŸŒ Rockets ๐ŸŒ Missiles ๐ŸŒ Magnets for satellite communications, radar and missile guidance systems. While battery demand accounts for 73% of the cobalt market, the US used most of its 8,300 metric tons of cobalt consumption in 2023 for super alloys. ๐Ÿ‘ Boost us! | Subscribe to @geopolitics_live

So what can the new Iranian president Pezeshkian do in practice? He can try to reduce tensions with the West but it's hard to say how given the main Iranian allies like Hezbollah, Houthis and Hamas are currently involved in a direct war with Israel, basically an existential war. The IRGC will not betray its allies regardless of who's in charge in the country. So in light of this situation all the claims about his foreign radical policy shift turn to dust as he won't be able to change anything. The only field where he might be able to do something is in domestic policies but the margins are not big and of course this won't make a difference in international affairs. If he would try to sideline Khamenei and disrespect the 1979 constitution he would be simply removed from power. Those who voted for him know he won't do it because his participation had the blessing of the ayatollahs, this is why he won. https://t.me/EurasianChoice/39912

Eurasia & Multipolarity

There was never a non-systemic opposition in Iran since the Islamic Revolution. There might be different nuances but all parties and candidates always pledge allegiance to the pillars of the 1979 constitution. For example Russia instead had a non-systemic opposition although very tiny and irrelevant in terms of members and popular support but was basically excluded from the last presidential elections because of sort of treason related charges (criticizing the Armed Forces for example or refusing to recognize Crimea and parts of former Eastern Ukraine as Russian territory) or simply due to lack of the signatures needed to participate, the non-systemic opposition in Russia was a remnant of the 90s anarchy when the West pillaged the country and was allowed to participate in the electoral process after 2000 when Putin came to power as a form of appeasement towards Western elites that obviously did not work, on the contrary Iran never had such a non-systemic opposition because the 1979 constitution clearly forbidsโ€ฆ
