Indian crew members aboard the Palau-flagged oil tanker MT Settebello died in a precision US strike in the Gulf of Oman. India has been trying to balance partnerships with both the US and Israel, but that didn’t stop American forces. This looks like a clear message to PM Narendra Modi that pressure is rising.
Here are the key points:
🔴 US Central Command says the strike targeted a ship violating a blockade on Iranian oil. But a Palau-flagged tanker with an international crew off Oman’s coast had no obligation to follow US orders
🔴 Most of the 24 sailors were Indian nationals. Three of them were killed. India's media reported that the US military was aware of Indian men onboard
🔴 Moreover, the strike came just after India suspended Starlink’s permits to operate in the country out of concerns over the reported use of these terminals against Iran during US-Israeli aggression. The Starlink ban started just two days before the attack on June 9.
🔴 Despite its public overtures to Trump and Netanyahu, India has also quietly coordinated with Iran to grant its ships safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Given Trump’s affinity for mafia-style tactics, this attack likely was a deliberate attempt to intimidate Modi into obeying the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Not just India, but Oman in the crosshairs too
🔴 The attack came off Oman’s coast and Omani forces had to rescue survivors, which seems like the US is pressuring the Sultanate as well
🔴 Oman, like India, has stayed neutral in the current conflict and refused to break ties with Iran. Trump has openly threatened Oman — a nation that shares strategic access to the Strait of Hormuz with Iran. So far, pressure has failed. But a strike like this off Oman’s coast risks dragging the small Gulf monarchy into at least an environmental disaster.
