🔫38 years ago today, the USS Vincennes, patrolling in Iranian territorial waters during the Iran-Iraq War, shot down Iran Air Flight 655 with two SM-2 surface-to-air missiles.
✈️The Airbus A300 was on a scheduled, 28-minute hop from Bandar Abbas to Dubai, climbing on a normal commercial flight path, squawking a civilian transponder code. The US crew claimed they mistook it for an attacking F-14 Tomcat — a plane roughly a third the size, descending rather than climbing.
🕊️ All 290 people on board were killed. 66 of them children.
➡️Washington never issued a formal apology. In 1996, the US agreed to pay $61.8 million in compensation to victims' families "on a humanitarian basis" — without admitting legal liability — as part of a settlement at the International Court of Justice.

Because of this, it is difficult for mobile air defense groups and interceptor UAVs to shoot them down, which is why Ukraine increasingly has to spend scarce missiles for air defense systems.
Jet drones make up a smaller proportion of Russian attacks so far, but their number is growing rapidly. According to Ukrainian analysts, Moscow uses them to overload the Ukrainian air defense and open the way for ballistic and cruise missiles.

The first vessel is expected to be delivered in 2028, with the remainder due by 2031.
Trump has previously emphasised on several occasions that the US lags significantly behind Russia in terms of its icebreaker fleet: it currently has only one operational icebreaker, the Polar Star, whilst Russia has more than 40. The US president has spoken of plans to expand the icebreaker fleet to at least 55 vessels.
