Essay Skill Tip: Oh and I want to quickly add. This post in particular has some bolded parts. These are crafted to address "harms vs good" because the question asks which is more. A very important tip is that we must compare! Many students make the mistake of only discussing 1 side in a body paragraph, but in truth the comparison should be in EVERY BP

| 3 | Some of us may feel unmotivated to even look at this because it's longgggg (I know!). But I would encourage you to do it when you're free because this is incredibly powerful. Being exposed to key arguments can quickly help you understand how to approach a topic, and it can provide significant insight into the most important arguments to learn, as well as see how we tweak ideas across questions 😃 | 141 |
| 4 | Essay Points of the Day: Media - Questions on ads have been popular in recent years in the A Levels. At first glance, they may seem very niche. But we can actually link such questions to more familiar or common topics like AI, algorithms, social campaigns, media echo chambers etc. To do well in any essay question is always about finding connections to content we have because it means we are actually apply content we have been building to that 1 and only qn we are answering

| 5 | If you're interested to learn Tweaking, the Example Workshop is here to help you. In fact, the biggest unique feature that differentiates our lesson is how we focus on analysing the argument of an example, and learning to tweak any single eg into a useful case study for tons of different topics and questions!
L1 and L2 have completed last week. Recordings for those are available. Join us for L3 Media, this Thurs! 30 Media Egs + 1 Model essay all in 1 lesson 😍 | 257 |
| 6 | _Content Tip (Similarities and Tweaking)__: The studying process for content can be streamlined and made much more effective if we identify how certain questions are similar. The key is knowing how to tweak what you have prepared, be it for examples or arguments. Tweaking = Look at a new question > Consider what is similar or different between this and other questions we have seen (either attempted or read model essays for) > Think about how our existing arguments can be adjusted to ATQ. Doing this effectively means that we don't have to know everything under the sun; knowing a few critical perspectives for a particular topic would equip we to answer many questions for that topic when we successfully tweak your knowledge. Many students make the mistake of assuming all questions are the same, but the truth is that questions have nuanced differences and our ability to tweak to those would greatly augment our writing's quality #Content | 249 |
| 7 | Essay Skill Tip (Thesis Statement): A thesis statement in the Introduction has two functions. Firstly, it expresses our stand, clearly indicating whether we agree or disagree with the question - and what that even means to us (how are we defining this view?). Secondly, it provides a reason for this stand. The reason, of course, comprises our arguments since they support our stand. But the way we express these arguments has some variation. We may either choose to list your arguments, or you can condense them into a single compelling idea (the essence of our points summarised in a sentence). This means finding a common thread that connects these points. The latter is harder to do, but shows more critical thinking, and gives a degree of personal voice. Also take note that the entire Intro should clearly state what are the 2 views in the question. We are required to discuss the counter argument, before writing our thesis statement to create balance #Essay | 232 |

| 10 | Essay Points of the Day: Individuals & Values: This topic is one of the most important because it has been coming out consecutively. It a MUST-KNOW question. The power of activism and movements in trying to change society are very core themes of GP. A Level questions love examining the power of the people and what they can do to impact the world around them!

| 14 | Content lessons from other teachers would typically focus on just giving facts and information. But our class does it differently. I focus heavily on how we can craft arguments and support them with specific examples, to answer actual GP questions.
And these questions are organised into the major themes that come out the most frequently. Also, the questions I have chosen would cover 90% of possible questions for a Theme.
So next week's Example Workshop would be a very helpful and systematic approach to prepare us to confidently attempt various questions, in a very short period of time :)
You can see it in the resource I have shared where I have analysed all the A Level questions into these Topics, to help students gain a solid structure over how we can study for GP content | 313 |
| 15 | FAQ: Should I write my counter first, or is it something like counter, my view, counter, my view?
Answer: I usually recommend that we write our counter-arguments (CA) first because what comes after would have more impact. What comes after will have the chance to respond to what has been said. In other, writing our CA first allows us to respond to the CA and explain why we have chosen our view over the CA. This is quite important because it expresses a strong view even while we show balance.
Switching between CA and our view back and forth could make it quite confusing for readers. We could also run the risk of sounding contradictory. It's better to separate them neatly and allow for a more coherent read. If we want to put out CA at the end, that's alright too but we must make sure we use the right transition phrases to avoid sounding contradictory #FAQ

| 17 | Essay Points of the Day: Politics - This question examines the pros and cons of Democracy, and invites students to compare it with other political systems. To do well, we need to identify key features that define Democracies, and then explain whether those are positive or negative

| 18 | _General Tip__: You're not in this journey alone! Divide and conquer is something that can make GP a lot easier, given that it's a content-heavy subject and in fact research-heavy. Collaborate with friends, share our vocabulary lists or share our content/examples compilation so that we can cover more ground with the same amount of time. It would also help to specialise in some similar themes. For example, every week, we can each find 2 interesting examples relating to that theme + 10 new vocab words, and then exchange that with a friend, or even a few friends. The idea is to generate a lot more resources that everyone can benefit from. Collaboration can also be applied to other subjects. It was something I did as a student and it greatly helped my grades and also friendships because we bonded over this. Of course, you can also "collaborate" with me by singing up for a few lessons to get tons of arguments, examples, and vocab haha #General | 338 |
| 19 | _FAQ: For 'in your society' questions, can I use examples from other countries? Or has to only be about Singapore?__
Answer: 'In your society' essay questions have a specific focus on the local context. This means that the arguments and examples should all be relevant for the situation in Singapore. Doing well for such questions requires a very nuanced and keen understanding of Singapore, including the perspectives, the issues and the recent events relating to the topic
If we wish to bring in examples from other countries, we may only do so as a point of comparison. This is to say we shouldn't just talk about some overseas example without relating it to Singapore. We can only use it to explain similarities or differences, and it would be best to follow-up with a corresponding local example #FAQ
