It has everything to do with the fact that beings who have not cultivated spiritual realization of the path have no business freewheeling and changing the instructions to guide to the path, from those who have realized these things.
An analogy - if you want to be a good painter, you first need to learn all the rules of painting. Once you’re a master of the rules, then you can “break” them, so to speak - operating on an artistic level - skillful means.
Until then, if you can’t even paint using basic technique, you probably have no business waxing poetic about how Picasso broke the rules and so will you. | 15 | Again, my personal opinion - I tend to agree. I think that to be a Deva you have to have a relationship with the Devas. This is why, for example, it’s said in Hinduism that only the Brahmins reincarnate as Devas, while the under-castes give offerings to the Brahmins so they can take rebirth as them. The Tantrikas of Hinduism say nonsense, they have access to the Supreme God through their own Atman, and they’re nondual in nature. Ofc quite a few non-Tantric sects have taken to that as well. I think there’s probably something to be said for that, in terms of direct access to the Deva Realms through mystical experience.
Nevertheless, we shouldn’t make Devahood our goal necessarily - the Bodhisattva is our goal, and then we can be born as anything and be on the right path - to include the Devas in Tushita. Don’t aim for the best rebirth, but the for the mind that can use any rebirth most effectively.
As Buddhist Tantric Practioners, we cultivate good relationships with all the classes of existence through the various offerings we give and the Bodhicitta we cultivate.
There’s a reason that the Devas asked Buddha to turn the wheel of dharma!
That said, this whole conversation gets a bit muddled - when you consider that, maybe some of the Devas … I don’t know “aren’t”. For example, if the Nazi Aliens are just superhumans … are they just humans? Very possibly. Or, if you consider them as genuine Devas (Deva’s have form bodies … but they’re not supposed to be hard flesh & bone like humans … which gives me strong suspicion that many of the “Gods” and “Angels” are not Devas, but superhumans) … but if you think they’re Deva’s - is it possible that some are strongly misbehaving? Sure, why not - humans misbehave too, we can act like animals far below our level of birth.
Anyways, a few speculations and hare brained thoughts on the subject - but the Deva’s & Asura’s I give prayers & offerings to have always been good to me. | 96 |

The reincarnation studies just don’t show that, in fact it shows very consistent human-human rebirths, and usually within one’s own sphere of community influence. Now, I don’t think that precludes animal to human stepping up (and ofc we wouldn’t know about human to animal stepping down, bc we can’t ask the animals) - but those who have memory, are pretty much all human to human - and it seems much more bound up in your personal relationships and karma you share with others, rather than a rebirth based almost solely on your ethical conduct, as many of the scriptures highlight.
As I said, it’s not really contradictory per se, it’s just that Buddhism is trying to teach the preciousness of human rebirth & ethical conduct - and those are *fantastic* things to be taught.
