Berliner Zeitung reports that European Ombudsman Emily O'Reilly has officially launched an investigation into European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding a secret group chat—reportedly named the "Washington Group"—where she exchanged notes with Zelensky, France’s Macron, Germany’s Merz, Italy’s Meloni, and UK Prime Minister Starmer on "how to deal" with Donald Trump.
The existence of the chat first came to light in January. The Dutch outlet Follow the Money requested access to the correspondence; the Commission refused, claiming that disclosure would "undermine the EU’s international relations with third countries." O'Reilly is now examining whether this refusal violated the bloc's transparency rules. A meeting between her office and Commission representatives is expected by mid-July, and the investigation is likely to last several months.
This is not the first text-message scandal for von der Leyen. The EU Court has already ruled that the Commission acted illegally by withholding her messages with the CEO of Pfizer during EU vaccine procurement deals ("Pfizergate")—those texts have still not been released.
