The entire stack — speech recognition, language model, and voice synthesis — runs locally on the processor, without any accelerators.
The main engineering challenge wasn't getting the AI to work, but keeping the Pi alive.
During inference, the current surges to 5 amps, the generator drops below the minimum 4.8V, and simply shuts down, dropping the computer.
To prevent this, the team soldered their own board with capacitors — it smoothes the voltage and provides about 20 seconds of backup, giving the hand a break. 🔋
Under the hood is Google Gemma 3 with 1 billion parameters, running via llama.cpp.
It takes about 30 seconds to boot up from the first crank of the handle, and the first response time is from 2.9 seconds.
The creators assure that with dry storage and normal temperature, the device will work even in a hundred years — except that the SD card will need replacing.
"You can feel the load directly through the handle," the authors note: when the language model and voice synthesis work simultaneously, it becomes noticeably harder to crank.
