How many Russians civilians (200,000) and Red Army men (40,000) lost their lives. And how the back of this west-backed operation was finally broken and the nazis either fled to the west or were sent to prison in the Soviet Union. Only to be released and sent back to Ukraine as ‘political prisoners’ in Khrushchev’s ‘de-Stalinisation’ drive in the late 1950s. This is information that has been known amongst small circles of interested communists in the west for some time, but the first time I’ve heard it referred to by a non-communist western observer. Given Scott’s knowledge of present-day Russian discourse, it seems to me another sign that today’s capitalist Russia, in its need to face the united forces of western imperialism, is having to look again at its history and re-evaluate the Stalin period on every level – military, social, political and economic.
