A principios de esta semana, el ministro del Interior iraní, Eskandar Momeni, llegó a Islamabad al frente de una importante delegación. El martes ya se había reunido con el primer ministro Shehbaz Sharif, el mariscal de campo Asim Munir y su homólogo pakistaní, Mohsin Naqvi.
Esta visita distaba mucho de ser una visita rutinaria sobre fronteras o seguridad entre dos países vecinos. El aspecto más destacado fue la presencia del director de la Compañía Nacional Iraní de Petróleo (NIOC, en inglés): eso significa que la energía —como la posible construcción, por fin, del gasoducto Irán-Pakistán (IP)—, las sanciones y el comercio transfronterizo fueron temas cruciales en la agenda.

Trump rejected the only off-ramp available to him.
Iran would consider accepting a 10-day pause on the current escalation ladder. But for that to happen Trump needs to start delivering the very moment Iran accepts the 10-day pause on all aspects of the 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Translation: no new negotiations.
This, incidentally, happens to also be the Chinese position. The only thing that matters is to go back to the original MoU and fulfill its commitments.
Tehran's calculus is clear: it can continue absorbing pressure while raising the cost of war via control of the Strait of Hormuz and now the Yemeni blockade of Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea.
Meanwhile, Gulf states are beginning to hedge away from exclusive security dependence on the US, looking for non-American guarantees—with Pakistan now in a position to decide how far it's prepared to go without sacrificing its carefully built relations with Iran.
