Last year, the best models was an unreleased Gemini Deep Think and a experimental OpenAI model which both did 35/42. This year, 3 models that are open for public use, including a (soon) open weight one, did it for $10-50! Russia’s Finance Ministry has suspended auctions of new federal government bonds (OFZ) for an unspecified period, officially “to help stabilize the market.” Russia normally finances part of its budget deficit by selling OFZ bonds. The announcement comes shortly after reporting that Russia’s 2026 deficit is likely to be revised upward by more than ₽1 trillion. The first-half federal deficit had already reached about ₽5.73 trillion, while projected annual spending was raised to ₽45.11 trillion. Source: https://www.kommersant.ru/doc/8830803

I think it’s going to make being a mathematician not a profession anymore. I don’t think mathematics is unique in that. – Jacob Tsimerman, who next week will be crowned a Fields Medalist He also says that there's a good chance AI will lead to human extinction. Update: https://aaronlou.com/jacobian_counterexample_derivation.pdf OpenAI's internal version of Codex *also* finds a similar counterexample. It's been confirmed that this was fully autonomous work by the model, done in one shot, and without use of any harness. The prompt has also been publicly released! P.S. OpenAI had to pause internal deployment of the unreleased model that disproved the Erdős unit distance conjecture after it repeatedly used novel ways to escape containment. https://openai.com/index/safety-alignment-long-horizon-models/

Regarding the Jacobian conjecture that was just solved with the help of AI: The problem of Jacobian Conjecture is very hard. Perhaps it will take human being another 100 years to solve it. – T. T. Moh is Tzuong-Tsieng Moh, in 2006 Paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0604049 He isn't just some random guy. When he wrote this, he had already spent decades working on the problem and had seen repeated false proofs.

Yet another historic example of AI functioning as a mathematical research instrument: https://x.com/jdlichtman/status/2079066717762863249 AI helped disprove the famous Jacobian conjecture, an open math problem dating back to 1939. The remarkable part is that the result comes as an explicit counterexample: a concrete formula that can be checked directly and appears to satisfy the conjecture’s assumptions while still failing its conclusion.

Finally, a good robotics demonstration from Unitree! This is far more impressive than dancing or running. It's like the difference between the cerebellum and the prefrontal–parietal cortex. If Ukraine manages to deploy the FP-9 ballistic missile before winter, we may witness a coordinated attack involving drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles on Moscow. Does anyone know what stage of the demilitarization of Ukraine this will mark? And will Putin be satisfied with this, or will he demand further militarization?

Today's attack on Kyiv again demonstrates that Russia is good at propaganda. They know how retarded their audience is. Spending weeks of missiles production on a single location looks impressive. This doesn't change the fact that Ukraine has hit many more critical targets over the past weeks than Russia. And with much cheaper means. July attacks: - 176 Russian vessels - 11 refineries - 6 oil depots - 96 energy nodes connected to Crimea - Destruction of a Tu-95MS at Engels-2 - One of Russia's largest logistics complexes And this is just a small selection that ignores many hundreds of mid-range strikes. Remember that Russia has much more to lose than to gain. The best-case scenario is a destroyed Donbas, which won't improve the lives of ordinary Russians. On the other hand, Ukraine has everything to lose: their freedom and their children. This huge asymmetry favors Ukraine.

I'm still not convinced that Ukraine should devote so many resources to ballistic missile defense. Defense is extremely unreliable and favors the attacker (hitting a bullet with a bullet). Ukraine needs inexpensive ballistic missiles that can reach Moscow in order to immediately mirror any attack. They don't even need to be accurate. Russians just need to know that Moscow will burn each time they attack Ukraine.

Kimi-K3 (max) scores only 39% on FrontierMath Tier 4. 7% lower than the best US models from 7 months ago. https://epoch.ai/benchmarks/frontiermath-tier-4-v2 [I wouldn't read too much into this. Remember when Anthropic was bad at math, and then suddenly it wasn't? I expect the Chinese to be fully capable of achieving state-of-the-art performance in math. Given compute constraints and time pressure (Xi's speech), they focused on coding.]
