✞✞✞On this day we commemorate the Great Scholar and the Blessed Tongued, Saint Mar Ephraim the Syrian and the Apostles Saints Peter and Paul✞✞✞
✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞
✞✞✞ Saint Mar Ephraim the Syrian✞✞✞
=>According to our Church’s Tradition St. Ephraim was born in Nisibis/Nisibin in Syria in 298 EC (306 AD). His parents were heathens (though some sources say they were Christians).
✞And there lived a great man named Jacob of Nisibis who was appointed as the Bishop of where the St. Ephraim was born and raised. The Bishop was a father that had the virtues of a martyr, an apostle, a righteous and a scholar. And for the reason that St. Ephraim always heard this father’s preaching and after being fascinated by his sermons, he was chanced to be his disciple.
✞After St. Ephraim was baptized through the hands of St. Jacob; he spent all his youth in learning. What was amazing was that his teacher, St. Jacob of Nisibis, loved our Lady the Virgin Mary with all his heart and because he was a father who could not have enough of invoking her name, he taught this virtue too to his spiritual son St. Ephraim very well.
✞And when St. Ephraim started studying Christianity more deeply, his love for our Lady increased. And that’s because there is no Christianity without loving the Mother of Light. He started serving and obeying her to the point that it could be said there was none who loved her as he did.
✞During that time, the praises of the Virgin Mary were oral and not written like today. But he used to praise her daily 64, 64 times according to her age by taking the passages “And in the sixth month…” and the Praise of Mary (the Magnificat) from the Gospel of Luke (Luke 1:26-38/46-55).
✞And while he lived in such a manner, Arius renounced Christ and when the 318 Scholars gathered at Nicaea, the teacher of Ephraim, St. Jacob, was one of them that congregated. And because of this, St. Ephraim received instruction and blessing from the scholars.
✞And when he returned from the council, he saw a revelation of a pillar of light on the road, and while he inquired, “My Lord! What is it?” The Lord answered him saying, “This is St. Basil the Great”. Then, he departed from his teacher St. Jacob and went to St. Basil who was in Caesarea. And as they met, the language of one was revealed to the other and vis versa, and they discussed for the whole night.
✞There, at that place many miracles occurred. After St. Ephraim learned from the Great St. Basil, and once he was given a district to preach in, he began teaching. In addition, St. Ephraim’s prayer and wish was always this, “My Lady! If I could have your praise abundantly like the stars of the sky and the sand of the sea. If I could consume it as bread and drink it as water and be clothed in it.”
✞Hence, the Mother of Light who hastens to help and fulfills wishes appeared and granted him his request. And he wrote her the praise ‘The Theotokion of Mary’ which we use today to gain grace and blessing. And when he authored it /praised her first with it/, it was by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit accompanied by her visitations together with the hosts of angels, saints and martyrs that came with her.
✞And after he had authored her theotokion in 7 days, she ascended after blessing him with a cross of light and revealing to him mysteries so he would become ‘Chief of the Scholars’. Thereafter, immersed in the mysteries, he wrote 14,000 works. And the hymns that we hear in Syria were authored by this Saint.
✞[He was immersed in mysteries as said previously to the extent that] even on one day, he prayed saying, “Please hold back the waves of Your grace” when the mysteries overwhelmed him. St. Ephraim, in his last days, was appointed as the Episcopos of the place known as Tikrit.✞And with his pleasant sermons, he converted many from disbelief and sweetened the lives of the faithful. He lived like a fortification that heretics and Arians could not push. | 215 |

††† እንደ ቤተ ክርስቲያናችን ትውፊት ቅዱስ ኤፍሬም የተወለደው ንጽቢን በምትባል የሶርያ ግዛት ውስጥ በ298 / 306 ዓ/ም ነው:: ወላጆቹ በክርስቶስ የማያምኑ አላውያን ነበሩ:: (ምንም አንዳንድ ምንጮች ክርስቲያኖች ነበሩ ቢሉም)
ቅዱሱ ተወልዶ ባደገባት ንጽቢን ጵጵስናን የተሾመ ቅዱስ ያዕቆብ የሚባል ታላቅ ሰው ነበር:: የሰማዕትነት: የሐዋርያነት: የጻድቅነትና የሊቅነት ግብር ያለው አባት ነው:: ታዲያ ቅዱስ ኤፍሬም ይሔ አባት ሁሌ ሲያስተምር ይሰማው ነበርና በስብከቱ ተማርኮ ደቀ መዝሙሩ ለመሆን በቃ::
ቅዱስ ኤፍሬም በቅዱስ ያዕቆብ እጅ ከተጠመቀ በኋላ ሙሉ የወጣትነት ጊዜውን ያሳለፈው በትምሕርት ነው:: የሚገርመው መምሕሩ ቅዱስ ያዕቆብ ዘንጽቢን እመቤታችን ድንግል ማርያምን በፍጹም ልቡ የሚወድና ጠርቷት የማይጠግብ አባት ነውና ለልጁ ለቅዱስ ኤፍሬም ይሕንኑ አጥብቆ አስተምሮታል::
ቅዱስ ኤፍሬም ክርስትናን ሲመረምር የእመቤታችን ፍቅር ይበዛለት ጀመር:: ምክንያቱም እመ ብርሃንን ሳይወዱ ክርስትና የለምና:: እንደ እርሱ የሚወዳት የለም እስኪባል ድረስ ያገለግላት: ይገዛላትም ገባ::
እንዲህ እንደ ዛሬ የድንግል ማርያም ምስጋና በአንደበት እንጂ በመጽሐፍ አይገኝም ነበር:: እርሱ ግን ከወንጌለ ሉቃስ በስድስተኛው ወርን (ይዌድስዋን) እና ጸሎተ ማርያምን(ታዐብዮን) አውጥቶ በየዕለቱ በዕድሜዋ ልክ ስልሳ አራት ስልሳ አራት ጊዜ ያመሰግናት ነበር::
በእንዲህ ያለ ግብር እያለ አርዮስ በመካዱ እርሱን ለማውገዝና ሥርዓተ ቤተ ክርስቲያንን ለማጽናት በ317 (325) ዓ.ም ሦስት መቶ አሥራ ስምንቱ ሊቃውንት በኒቅያ ሲሰበሰቡ አንዱ መምሕረ ኤፍሬም ቅዱስ ያዕቆብ ነበር:: በዚህ ምክንያት ቅዱስ ኤፍሬም ከሊቃውንቱ ትምሕርትና በረከትን አግኝቷል::
ከጉባዔ መልስ መንገድ ላይ በራዕይ የብርሃን ምሰሶ አይቶ "ጌታ ሆይ! ምንድን ነው?" ብሎ ቢጠይቅ "ይሕማ ታላቁ ቅዱስ ባስልዮስ ነው::" አለው:: እርሱም መምሕሩን ቅዱስ ያዕቆብን ተሰናብቶ ወደ ቅዱስ ባስልዮስ (ቂሣርያ) ወረደ:: ተገናኝተውም በአንድ ሌሊት ቋንቋ ተገልጦላቸው ሲጨዋወቱ አድረዋል::
በቦታው ብዙ ተአምራት ተደርጓል:: ቅዱስ ኤፍሬም ከታላቁ ባስልዮስ ከተማረ በኋላ ሃገረ ስብከት ተሰጥቶት ያስተምር ጀመር:: ሁል ጊዜ ታዲያ ጸሎቱ ይሔው ነበር:: "እመቤቴ ሆይ! ምስጋናሽ እንደ ሰማይ ከዋክብት: እንደ ባሕር አሽዋ በዝቶልኝ: እንደ እንጀራ ተመግቤው: እንደ ውኃ ጠጥቼው: እንደ ልብስም ተጐናጽፌው" እያለ ይመኝ ነበር::
አፍጣኒተ ረድኤት: ፈጻሚተ ፈቃድ እመ ብርሃንም በገሃድ ተገልጻ የልቡን ፈቃድ ፈጸመችለት:: ዛሬ ጸጋ በረከት የምናገኝበትን ውዳሴ ማርያምን ደረሰላት:: ሲደርስላትም እርሷ አእላፍ መላእክትን: ጻድቃን ሰማዕታትን አስከትላ ወርዳ: በፊቱም ተቀምጣ ሲሆን እርሱ ደግሞ ባጭር ታጥቆ: በፊቷ ቆሞ: በመንፈስ ቅዱስም ተቃኝቶ ነው::
ውዳሴዋን በሰባት ቀናት ከደረሰላት በኋላ በብርሃን መስቀል ባርካው: ሊቀ ሊቃውንትም እንዲሆን ምሥጢር ገልጣለት ዐረገች:: ከዚህ በኋላ በምሥጢር ባሕር ውስጥ ዋኝቶ አሥራ አራት ሺህ ድርሰቶችንም ደርሷል:: ዛሬ ሶርያ ውስጥ የምንሰማውን ዜማም የደረሰው ይህ ቅዱስ ነው::
እንዲያውም አንድ ቀን የምሥጢር ማዕበል ቢያማታው "አሃዝ እግዚኦ መዋግደ ጸጋከ" ብሎ ጸልዩዋል:: (የጸጋህን ማዕበል ያዝልኝ) እንደ ማለት ነው:: ቅዱስ ኤፍሬም ሶርያዊ በመጨረሻ ሕይወቱ ተክሪት በምትባል ሃገር ኤጲስ ቆጶስ ሆኖ ተሹሟል::
በጣፋጭ ስብከቱ ብዙዎችን ካለማመን መልሷል:: የምዕመናንንም ሕይወት አጣፍጧል:: ለመናፍቃንና ለአርዮሳውያን ግን የማይጋፉት ግድግዳ ሆኖባቸው ኑሯል:: በዘመኑም ብዙ ተጋድሎ አፍርቷል:: ተአምራትንም ሠርቷል:: በተወለደ በስልሳ ሰባት ዓመቱ በ365 (373) ዓ.ም ዐርፎ ተቀብሯል::
††† ቅዱሱ ለሶርያ ብቻ ሳይሆን እመቤታችንን ለምንወድ የዓለም ክርስቲያኖች ሁሉ ሞገሳችን ሆኗል:: ስለዚህም እንዲህ እያልን እንጠራዋለን:-

ቅዱሳኑ ሶርያ አካባቢ ውስጥ ወደምትገኝ አንዲት ሃገር ገብተው ሕዝቡን ከንጉሣቸው ጰራግሞስ ጋር አሳምነው አጥምቀዋል:: ነገር ግን እነርሱ ሲወጡ ሰይጣን አስቶት አጥፊ ሰው ወደ መሆን ተመልሶ ንጉሡ ሐዋርያትን አሰቃይቷቸዋል::
ስለ ቅዱሳኑ ግን ፈረሶቹ ሰግደው: በሰው አንደበት ቅድስናቸውን መስክረዋል:: በመጨረሻም ንጉሡን ከነ ሕዝቡና ሠራዊቱ በዓየር ላይ ሰቅለው ንስሐ ሰጥተውታል:: በእነዚህ ተአምራትም ሁሉም አምነው ለከተማዋና ለሕዝቡ ድኅነት ተደርጓል::

✞✞✞On this day we commemorate the Martyrdom of Saint Procopius (Proconius) and hold the annual feast of Saint Macarius, Chief of the Monks✞✞✞
✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞
✞✞✞ Saint Procopius (Proconius)/ Abrokonyos the Martyr✞✞✞
=>The Saint was born around the 3rd century in Antioch (Syria) (there are those that say in Jerusalem). His father was a kind Christian named Christopher (Christophorus) which means “Bearer of Christ”. However, his mother was a heathen named Theodosia. Though his father was a Christian, for the reason that his mother was a fierce woman of the court/palace, Procopius was not able to study Christianity.
✞But the father, who did not like his son to end up a heathen, had only one choice. And it was to beseech the Lord. While in such a state, many years passed and Procopius became 20 years old without knowing Christ. The Saint’s mother trained him and gave him to an Emperor that was an idolater (Diocletian). The Emperor then appointed him as an officer/ a governor, and gave him one order, which stated, “Slaughter all the Christians wherever you find them and burn their houses.”
✞ Procopius to execute his orders went out followed by his soldiers but the 20-year long prayers and tears of his father bore fruit. While he was on the road, may Lordship be to the invocation of His name; our Savior Jesus Christ sent him His voice from heaven. He said to him, “Return to the path of truth or else it will be hard for you if you step on the scimitar/prick.”
✞And Procopius trembling asked, “Who are You, my Lord?” And the Lord answered to him saying, “I am Jesus Christ.” Again when he enquired saying, “Give me a sign.” He revealed to him a luminous Cross in the sky. St. Procopius then did not waste any time.
✞He returned to the city of the Emperor with his soldiers and said to him boldly, “I am a Christian. I worship Christ.” From his speech, his father was gladdened but the Emperor and his mother were shocked. The Emperor tried to threaten him but was not successful. Thereafter, he started to afflict him.
✞One day, they lashed him until his body was cut to pieces. Then, they set him on fire and left him thinking he was dead. But when they returned, he did not even have a stripe bruise on his body as the our Lord had healed him. His mother, Theodosia, did not need any more signs beyond this. Within minutes she converted to Christianity and she became a martyr, preceding her son, on Hamle 6 (July 13).
✞Because they could not separate St. Procopius after torturing him for several days from the love of Christ, they killed/slayed him on this day. Father, mother and son (Christopher, Theodosia and Procopius) received the heavenly kingdom. This is what a father (fatherhood) is!
✞✞✞ Saint Macarius the Great✞✞✞
=>One day, St. Macarius, Chief of the Monks, who bore fruits like a palm tree, did the following.
✞A wealthy man came to the Monastery of Scetes after hearing the fame of St. Macarius. And when Abba Macarius knew that the affluent man was coming, he took off his cloth amongst his brethren, the monks, and started to play jumping here and there like a lunatic.
✞And when that well-to-do city man reached the monastery, he came before the monks and asked, “I came after hearing Abba Macarius’ prominence to receive his blessing. Which one amongst you is he?” And they responded with, “There he is” by pointing to the Saint. When the wealthy man saw him, the Saint was playing like a maniac and a child by jumping around. Then the affluent man reacted by saying, “Oh my God! I thought he was a normal person. I labored in vain!” and left in grief. Immediately, the monks gathered and asked St. Macarius, “Why did you do that?” And he responded with, “First he has to honor me as a human.” In fact, before anything else we should respect a person only because he/she is a human being – for his/her humanity (because he/she is/was created in the image and likeness of God).✞✞✞The feast of St. Macarius the Great is held in the Church today. | 1 917 |
