Feasts of Hamle 9 ✞✞✞On this day we commemorate the departure of Abba Helian✞✞✞ ✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞ ✞✞✞ Abba Helian the Ascetic✞✞✞ =>The Saint was born and raised in a province of Egypt which was called the “Eye of the sun” (Heliopolis?). His parents were called Dista and Kalmona. Because they were good Christians, they taught him this strictly, when he was a child. St. Helian was not only known for his fasting and prayer, but he was also acclaimed for his temporal vocation, metalsmithing as a jeweler. ✞He had wealth, which he earned with his sweat. Particularly, he made his living from making gold and silver ornaments. And he helped the needy from his earnings. While he lived in such a manner, one day, he was tried. One Arabian woman came, asked him to make her earrings and he made her the jewelry from gold. However, after he gave her the earrings, she said, “I will not pay you.” ✞And when he responded saying, “Why my sister?! Why won’t you pay me my labors worth?”, she revealed her figure saying, “Let me give you my womanhood” inviting him for adultery. The Virgin Helian was very much socked by her speech and deed. He made the sign of the Cross before her and went to his home. He spent all night in sadness and when dawn broke, he resolved from his heart and decided to leave this temporal world. ✞The wealth, property, house, land, gold and silver, which he accumulated with his youthful vigor, did not make him hesitant. He called all the destitute to his home and distributed all his property. Because he only was left with the cloth that he was wearing, he filled in jubilation left the city and went to the desert. And since the Lord, Who knows the heart, wished to guide him, He sent him 3 holy anchorites (sowah/invisible fathers). ✞All three appeared before him crowned in luminous diadems, wearing luminous copes and holding luminous staffs. They led him to a wilderness which was scenic to the eyes that had water flowing on its right and left. There were no wild animals let alone people. And when the 3 Saints entered that habitation, gave him a staff which had a gem on top of it and said, “Let us prostrate to God”. ✞After he prostrated, when he looked up, all 3 were gone because they had disappeared [as they were spirit-borne]. Abba Helian wept because he was separated from the Saints. ✞But he strengthened his strife with prayer, fasting and prostrations. The Saint wore and ate leaves. He did not know night because that staff which he received used to emit great light. ✞And when he wanted to travel, it led him and shortened the distance. He lived in such a manner for many years separated from people. Demons tempted him in several ways but they could not resist him. When they were lacking in strength, they went to a city in the likeness of men and made a deal with bandits to kill him. But the bandits while seeing him before them, were not able to reach him as they walking towards him. ✞God in His wisdom lengthened their path. Later, when the bandits were about to perish from weariness and thirst, the Saint though they came to kill him had compassion for them and went to them walking on the water and without using a boat. He fed them from wild berries/fruits, gave them to drink from clean water, and sent them on their way. ✞One day, when he was of old age, those 3 Saints that disappeared from him revealed themselves to him again. And after they had spent the night conversing joyfully, when dawn broke, Abba Helian prostrated towards the east and departed. Thereafter, the 3 Saints shrouded and buried him in his cell. They wrote his accounts, placed it there and disappeared again. ✞✞✞ May the God of the Saints also send us the aid of the Fathers.
