Some Suitable Conditions for a Second Marriage
He said:
A person once asked me for advice regarding a second marriage. I asked him, “How many houses do you have?”
He replied: “Only one.”
I said: “Then it is not suitable for you.”
He asked: “How many houses should there be?”
I said: “There should be three.”
He asked: “Why three?”
I replied: “Because two houses should be for both wives to live in separately, and the third house should be there for you. So that when disagreements arise between both wives, you may live separately in that third house. Because when you become upset with them, where will you stay?”
Hearing this, he became silent. Later, the woman he wanted to marry was married to someone else, but afterward he went to Kanpur and performed a second marriage.
Smiling, he said: “Take it as though it was that woman’s prohibition (whose marriage had taken place elsewhere).” Our Hazrat said: “In polygamy, if the husband is quick-tempered and firm, then everything remains in order; otherwise, if he is of a soft, yielding nature, the wives make him helpless. There is a person here who has four wives, yet there is perfect harmony among them all. He doesn’t even give special attention to anyone. The fact is that they are all oppressed, and when people are oppressed, unity among them naturally develops.”

दूसरा निकाह करने की बाज़ (कुछ) मुनासिब शराइत
फरमाया कि एक शख़्स ने मुझ से अक़्द-ए-सानी (दूसरे निकाह) के मुतल्लिक़ मशवरा पूछा तो मैंने कहा कि तुम्हारे पास कितने मकान हैं?
उस ने कहा: एक है।
मैंने कहा: तुम्हारे लिये मुनासिब नहीं है।
उन्होंने कहा: कितने मकान होने चाहिये?
मैंने कहा: तीन होने चाहिये।
उन्होंने पूछा: तीन किस लिये?
मैंने कहा: तीन इस लिये होने चाहिये कि दो मकान तो दोनों बीवियों के रहने के लिये हों और तीसरा मकान इस लिये कि जब उन दोनों से इख़्तिलाफ़ हो जाये तो आप इस तीसरे मकान में दोनों से अलग रहें, क्यों कि जब तुम उन से रूठोगे तो कहाँ रहोगे? वह यह सुन कर रुक गये। फिर जिस औरत से वह निकाह करना चाहते थे उस का दूसरी जगह निकाह भी हो गया, मगर फिर उन्होंने कानपुर जा कर दूसरा निकाह किया।
हँस कर फरमाया कि यह यूँ समझिये कि उसी औरत की (जिस का निकाह दूसरे से हो गया) ममनूअत (मनाही) थी। हमारे हज़रत ने फरमाया कि तअद्दुद-ए-अज़्वाज (कई शादियों) में तो जहाँ मर्द तेज़ मिजाज़ हो तो सब ठीक रहते हैं, वरना जहाँ मुल्ला आदमी हो, उसे तो नको (बदनाम) बना लेती हैं। यहाँ एक शख़्स के चार बीवियाँ हैं, सब में ख़ूब इत्तेफ़ाक़ है, वह किसी को मुँह भी नहीं लगाता। बात यह है सब मज़लूम हैं और मज़लूमों में इत्तेफ़ाक़ हो ही जाता है।

If there is capacity, then one should build a house to live in.
He said: My wife would always tell me, “Build a separate house to live in,” but I would put it off, saying, “For such a short-lived life, what need is there to build a house?”
When I went for Hajj, and afterwards she too arrived from home, she complained to Hazrat Haji Sahib, saying, “I ask him to build a house, but he does not build one.” Hazrat said to me, “Brother, your family is asking you to build a house, what harm is there? This is a good thing, one finds comfort in one’s own private home.”
I thought to myself, “This is indeed a clever way she have found to get the house built.” So I submitted, “Very well, now it will be built.”
Later, upon returning, when the house was completed, I deliberately wrote to Hazrat. Hazrat replied, “Congratulations on the house.”
Our Hazrat said, “After building the house, I realised that without it, there is indeed no comfort. Otherwise, if someone is in financial difficulty and cannot build one, that is another matter.”

अगर गुंजाइश हो तो अपने रहने के लिये मकान बना लेना चाहिये।
फ़रमाया कि घर में से हमेशा मुझ से कहा करतीं कि एक मकान रहने के लिये जुदा (अलग) बना लो लेकिन मैं उनको टाल देता कि चंद रोज़ा ज़िंदगी के लिये क्या मकान बनाती हो।
जब मैं हज को गया और बाद में घर में से भी पहुँच गईं तो उन्होंने हज़रत हाजी साहब से शिकायत की कि मैं घर बनाने को कहती हूँ और यह घर नहीं बनाते। हज़रत ने मुझ से फ़रमाया कि मियाँ! तुम्हारे घर में से घर बनाने को कहती है, क्या हरज है यह तो अच्छी बात है, अपने ख़ास घर में आराम मिलता है। मैंने जी में कहा कि तरकीब तो मकान बनवाने की अच्छी निकाली है। मैंने अर्ज़ कर दिया बहुत अच्छा, अब बन जायेगा।
जब बाद वापसी, मकान बन गया तो क़स्दन (जान बूझ कर) मैंने हज़रत को लिखा। हज़रत ने फ़रमाया: घर मुबारक हो।
हमारे हज़रत ने फ़रमाया कि घर बनाने के बाद मालूम हुआ कि बग़ैर इसके राहत नहीं होती, बाक़ी अगर किसी को तंगी हो और न बना सके तो और बात है।

Prohibition of Memorising the Qur’an Due to Weakness of Mind
He said: A person whose mind is weak, I stop him from memorising the Qur’an. Such a person, if he first studies some Arabic and then begins memorisation, it becomes easier for him because he already knows the rules. I always tell the students: during the time of study, try to understand the books, do not try to memorise them. If you try to memorise at this stage, the mind gets spoiled and even the books are left unstudied. Nowadays the faculties cannot bear this burden. What is worse is that some of the teachers in madrasas impose such harsh tasks on students that they become useless, and this is a great injustice. Some even make them memorise Kafiyah (a book of Arabic grammar). Now, is that something to be memorised? If you are so eager to memorise, then memorise the Noble Qur’an. From the words of Ibn Hājib, veils will only fall upon the heart, whereas if you memorise the Word of Allah, all veils will be removed.

ज़अफ़-ए-दिमाग़ (दिमाग़ की कमज़ोरी) की वजह से हिफ़्ज़-ए-क़ुरआन की मुमानअत (मनाही)
फ़रमाया कि जिस का दिमाग़ कमज़ोर होता है मैं उसे क़ुरआन हिफ़्ज़ करने से मना कर देता हूँ। ऐसा शख़्स तो कुछ अरबी पढ़ने के बाद हिफ़्ज़ शुरू करे तो क़वायद मालूम होने की वजह से हिफ़्ज़ आसान हो जाता है और मैं तलबा (छात्रों) से हमेशा यही कहता हूँ कि किताबें पढ़ने के ज़माना में समझने की कोशिश करो, हिफ़्ज़ की कोशिश न करो, इस से दिमाग़ ख़राब हो कर और किताबें भी रह जाती हैं और आज कल क़ुवा (ताकतें) इस के मुतहम्मिल (बर्दाश्त करने वाले) नहीं हैं, ग़ज़ब तो यह है कि बा'ज़ अहल-ए-मदारिस तलबा से ऐसी ऐसी सख़्त मेहनतें कराते हैं कि जिस से वह बेकार हो जाते हैं और यह बड़ा ज़ुल्म है। बा'ज़े काफ़िया (किताब) हिफ़्ज़ कराते हैं, भला यह भी कोई हिफ़्ज़ कराने की चीज़ है? अगर हिफ़्ज़ का ही शौक़ है तो क़ुरआन शरीफ़ हिफ़्ज़ करो, इब्ने हाजिब के कलाम से क़ल्ब पर और हिजाब (पर्दा) ही पड़ जाएंगे, हाँ कलामुल्लाह हिफ़्ज़ करो जिस से सब हिजाब (पर्दे) मर्तफ़े (दूर) हो जाएँ।

The Method of Examination by Hazrat Thanvi — The Present Method of Students’ Examination is Burdensome.
He said: Nowadays the written examination which is in practice, I am opposed to it. It puts great hardship and burden upon the students. The purpose of examination is to see the capability (of the student). During the time of student life, it is sufficient to see whether he has properly understood the book or not. This fact can also be known even if the student is examined with the book open before him. As for memorisation, this comes naturally through studying and teaching; in fact, the memorisation during student life does not even last, and the mind becomes unnecessarily strained.
At my place in Kanpur, the examination was always oral, and students were even allowed to refer to commentaries and marginal notes while answering. Because of this, all the students used to pray for me. The main point was only to see whether the student, with the help of study or through the assistance of annotations and explanations, could solve the given passage or not. Beyond this, everything else is unnecessary trouble. I even presented this opinion in other madrasas also; though they verbally agreed (“We believe”), they did not put it into practice (“but we did not act”).

हज़रत वाला का तरीक़ा इम्तिहान-ए-तलबा, मौजूदा तरीक़-ए-इम्तिहान तलबा के लिये गेराँ (भारी) है।
फ़रमाया: आज कल जो तहरीरी इम्तिहान (लिखने वाली परीक्षा) राइज़ (जारी) है, मैं तो उसका मुख़ालिफ़ हूँ। इस में तलबा (छात्रों) पर बड़ी मशक्क़त व गेरानी (भारीपन) पड़ती है। इम्तिहान से मक़सूद तो इस्ते'दाद (योग्यता) का देखना है, सो तालिब-इल्मी के ज़माना में इस क़दर इस्ते'दाद का देखना काफ़ी है कि इस किताब को यह अच्छी तरह समझ भी गया या नहीं, सो यह बात किताब देख कर इम्तिहान देने से भी मालूम हो सकती है। बाक़ी रहा हिफ़्ज़ (ज़बानी याद) होना, यह पढ़ने पढ़ाने से ख़ुद हो जाता है बल्कि तालिब-इल्मी के ज़माना का हिफ़्ज़ याद भी नहीं रहता और दिमाग़ मुफ़्त में ख़राब हो जाता है।
मेरे यहाँ कानपुर में हमेशा त़करीरी (ज़बानी) इम्तिहान होता था और शुरूह व हवाशी (व्याख्या) देख कर भी जवाब देने की इजाज़त थी, जिससे सब तलबा दुआ देते थे। बस इस क़दर देख ले कि इस मक़ाम (जगह) को यह तालिब-इल्म मुतालआ से या हवाशी व शरह (कुंजी) की इआनत (सहायता) से हल भी कर सकता है या नहीं। इस से ज़्यादा बख़ेड़ा है। और इस राय को मैंने दूसरे मदरसों में भी पेश किया मगर "आमन्ना" तो है, लेकिन "अमलना" नहीं है।

An Incident of Honesty in Dealings
He narrated that once at home, a maid was sent to buy betel leaves. When they were counted, they turned out to be more than the usual number. Upon inquiry, it was discovered that the shopkeeper’s wife had secretly given them from the house and had kept the money for herself.
I said, “The right of it still remains upon us, because the betel leaves belong to her husband’s property.” Considering the reputation of the woman, I devised this way: I sent the shopkeeper the full amount according to the usual number he used to give, and told him, “This money had remained due from us to you.” He immediately accepted it, without even asking when it had become due.

मुआमलात की सफ़ाई का एक वाक़िआ
फ़रमाया कि घर में एक मर्तबा एक नाइन से पान मंगाए, वो शुमार किए (गिने) तो मामूल साबिक़ (पिछली आदत) से ज़्यादा थे। तहक़ीक़ से मालूम हुआ कि दुकानदार के घर से उसकी औरत ने उस से छुपा कर दे दिए थे और पैसे ख़ुद रख लिए। मैंने कहा कि उसका हक़ तो हमारे ज़िम्मे रहा। क्योंकि यह तो मिल्क उसके ख़ावंद (पति) ही की है, औरत की बदनामी के ख़याल से ये तरकीब की कि जिस हिसाब से वह पान दिया करता था उसी हिसाब से उसके पास पूरे पैसे भेज दिए और यह कह दिया कि यह पैसे तुम्हारे हमारे ज़िम्मे रह गए थे, उसने फ़ौरन रख लिए। यह भी तो नहीं पूछा कि कब रह गए थे।

An Incident of Honesty in Dealings
He narrated that once at home, a maid was sent to buy betel leaves. When they were counted, they turned out to be more than the usual number. Upon inquiry, it was discovered that the shopkeeper’s wife had secretly given them from the house and had kept the money for herself.
I said, “The right of it still remains upon us, because the betel leaves belong to her husband’s property.” Considering the reputation of the woman, I devised this way: I sent the shopkeeper the full amount according to the usual number he used to give, and told him, “This money had remained due from us to you.” He immediately accepted it, without even asking when it had become due.
