سامويل بَتلِر Samuel Butler جان كاتِب إنكليزي عاش بالقرن الـ 19 وعاصَر تشارلز داروين وجان متأثر بنظرية التطور. من بين اللي كتبه جانت مقالة غريبة إسمها "داروين بَينَ الآلات." بهاي المقالة أخذ بَتلِر نظرية التطور لنهايتها المنطقية وهي أنّ مملكة الحيوانات مثلما تطورت من مملكة النباتات (مثلما جانوا يعتقدون بوقتها)، فحاليًا أكو مملكة جديدة دتتطور من الحيوانات، سمّاها مملكة الآلات. بَتلِر عاش بأوج الثورة الصناعية وشاف الآلات اللي ديخترعوها البشر تتطور وتزيد تعقيدًا يوم عن يوم. وية كل آلة يخترعوها البشر، ديحطّون أنفسهم بلا شعور في مقام الخدمة للآلات اللي اخترعوها لخدمة أنفسهم بالمقام الأول، بحيث صار أكو عمّال يوفرون "الغذاء" للآلة حتى تشتغل، وأكو أطباء "يعالجون" الآلة لما تعطل، وأكو مَن "يولِّدون" أجيال وأفراد جدد من الآلات. بالنتيجة، سامويل بَتلِر إستنتج أنّ البشر بأيديهم ديخلقون خليفتهم وبديلهم، اللي هو الآلات المفكِّرة. وأنّ رح يجي يوم حتى وظيفة "توليد" الآلات رح تكون آلية تمامًا وما تحتاج البشر لوجودها. بوقتها رح نكون إحنة العِرق الأدنى، وعلى الأرض رح يظهر كائن جديد، ومثلما البيولوجيا تطوّرت من الكيمياء، فالتكنولوجيا رح تتطوّر من البيولوجيا وتتفوق عليها. الحل اللي وفّره سامويل بَتلِر بالنهاية هو "حربٌ حتى الموت" وجهاد شامل ضد كل الآلات المعقدة قبل فوات الأوان.
غالب الظن أنّ فرانك هيربرت، مؤلف Dune قرأ مقالة بَتلِر ومنها أخذ فكرة وإسم الـ Butlerian Jihad بالرواية اللي جانت حرب دامية ضد الآلات المفكِّرة كادت تمحو البشرية، وبسببها إتفق البشر على تدمير كل آلة مفكِّرة تشبه الإنسان.
