| 11 | The table and bar charts show data on healthcare professionals in Australia between 1986 and 2006. In general, the total number of doctors increased significantly, with the proportion of males dropping and that of females rising during the period. Moreover, noticeable growth was also recorded in the percentage of oversea doctors in the country, reaching an equal level with local professionals in 2006.
The overall number of doctors stood at 23,720 in 1986, which went up to more than 29,000 in 1996 and further to 35,450 within the next decade surveyed.
As for sex-based analysis, male doctors outnumbered their gender counterparts in all three years. However, the gender gap dropped dramatically, as the share of men showed a huge drop of 15% from 75% in the first year whereas that of women increased from 25% to 40% during the timeframe.
Lastly, over sixty percent of doctors were born in Australia in 1986 while the remaining part had the oversea birth status. The gap narrowed between the given years, leading to equality in the final year. | 798 |
