LEGEND OF THE TIME TRAVELLING MONK --- Bl. Ero of Armenteira contemplated for so long on what the bliss of being in paradise would be like. One day, he rested under a tree and happily listened to birds chirping. Not long after, he walked back to the monastery. He was surprised because he did not know the monk who opened the door. When he said that he was Ero the Abbot, the monk was surprised and called the other monks. Later, the monks explained what year they were in. Apparently, 300 years had gone by. He experienced “paradise bliss.” His name is recorded in the Benedictine menology, not in the Roman Martyrology

AUGUST 30: THE PEARL OF TYBURN Saint Margaret Ward Layperson and Martyr Died: 1588 --- She was an English laywoman and martyr. She was living and working in London when the persecution against Catholics started. She was able to help a Catholic priest escape prison. She was arrested. She was whipped while hung up with her hands tied. She refused to tell them where the priest was. The Anglicans told her that she’d be freed if she joins them in their worship. She refused. She was hanged for being Catholic in Tyburn.

Husbands and fathers, if you can't trust your wife to teach your kids the faith don't wait for her to ask, just teach her. Corinthians 14:34 Let women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted them to speak but to be subject, as also the law saith. 14:35 But if they would learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home. AUGUST 30: THE MARTYR OF THE CRUCIFIX Blessed Vicente Cabanes Badenas Priest and Martyr Died: 1936 --- He was a Spanish priest and martyr. He was a member of the Capuchin Tertiary Fathers and Brothers of Our Lady of Sorrows known as “Amigonianos.” During the anti-Catholic Spanish Revolution, he was arrested by the militiamen. He was asked to renounce his faith. He refused and showed them his crucifix. They brought him out, shot him, and left him, believing he was dead. He lived for 2 more days before dying clutching the crucifix.

AUGUST 29: THE FRANCISCAN MARTYRS OF VALENCIA Blessed Giovanni of Perugia and Blessed Pietro of Sassoferrato Priest, Religious Brother, Martyrs Died: 1231 --- Bl. John was an Italian Franciscan priest while Bl. Peter was an Italian Franciscan religious brother. They were both sent by St. Francis himself to preach the Good News in Spain, which, during that time, was under the control of Muslims. They set about preaching the truth of the Gospel and replying to the errors of Islamism in the public square. They were imprisoned and later killed.

HE REFUSED TO CONVERT TO ISLAM Servant of God Philip Ya’qob Abraham --- Today is the death anniversary of the Servant of God Philip Ya’qob Abraham. He was an Iraqi eparch (bishop) He belonged to the Chaldean Church which is in full communion with Rome. He was a member of the Antonian Order of Saint Ormizda. During the Aramean Genocide done by Ottoman authorities, he was arrested. One week later, he was asked to convert to Islam., He refused, so he was shot with Bl. Flavyanus Mikhail Melki.

He was sent as a missionary to Mexico. He later arrived in California where he established missions. Despite the obstacles and difficulties, preached the Gospel of Christ in the language of the peoples of the place and strenuously defended the rights of the poor. Anti-Catholics, however, questioned his manner of converting the natives. He did nothing wrong.

AUGUST 28: A ROBBER TURNED SAINT Saint Moses I of Ethiopia Abbot Died: 405 --- He is also known as St. Moses the Black. He was an African monk and abbot. He was a slave until he was dismissed for theft and murder. He joined a violent gang of robbers. He later converted to Christianity and decided to live as a monk. He had a rather difficult time adjusting to his new life. His flair for adventure remained with him. But he was able to manage and even convinced some robbers to become monks as well.

AUGUST 27: A PATIENT WIFE AND LOVING MOTHER Saint Timaniket of Thagaste Widow Died: 387 --- She’s more popularly known as St. Monica. She was an Algerian Berber widow and was the mother of St. Augustin of Hippo. Her husband treated her badly. She loved him and prayed for him. She also prayed for the conversion of Augustine. Tradition says that creases developed on her face, due to the tears that flowed from her eyes. Her prayers were heard. She is the patron saint of difficult marriages and battered wives.

AUGUST 27: THE CONVERTER OF ANGLICANS Blessed Domenico of the Mother of God Priest Died: 1849 --- He was an Italian Passionist priest. His original name was Domenico Barberi. He began his preaching in Italy, but became prominent in England, where he brought many Anglicans to the Catholic faith, including the future St. John Henry Newman. He was appreciated by the Popes Pius X and Leo XIII, who knew him personally when he was nuncio to Brussels. He was a man of vast learning, as seen in his many philosophical and theological works.

AUGUST 27: THE MISSIONARY TO SAMPALOC AND POLO Blessed Francisco of St. Mary Priest and Martyr Died: 1627 --- He was a Spanish Franciscan priest and martyr. He was a member of the Alcantarine branch of the Franciscans. He was sent as a missionary to the Philippines where he served in Sampaloc and Polo. He later went to Japan to preach the Gospel there. After four years, he was captured for being a Catholic priest. He and his group of 14 Christians were all sentenced to death. He was burned alive while the others were beheaded.
