SEPTEMBER 16: THE POPE OF REPENTANT APOSTATES Saint Cornelius Pope and Martyr Died: 253 --- He was a martyred pope who reigned for 2 years. He is represented holding a cow horn because his name means “battle horn.” As a pope, he condemned the heresy of Novatianism which taught that Christians who turned away from the faith should not be accepted back. Hence, he welcomed back those who had apostatized during the persecutions of Emperor Decius. He died while in exile for being a Christian.
