AUGUST 27: A PATIENT WIFE AND LOVING MOTHER Saint Timaniket of Thagaste Widow Died: 387 --- She’s more popularly known as St. Monica. She was an Algerian Berber widow and was the mother of St. Augustin of Hippo. Her husband treated her badly. She loved him and prayed for him. She also prayed for the conversion of Augustine. Tradition says that creases developed on her face, due to the tears that flowed from her eyes. Her prayers were heard. She is the patron saint of difficult marriages and battered wives.

AUGUST 27: THE CONVERTER OF ANGLICANS Blessed Domenico of the Mother of God Priest Died: 1849 --- He was an Italian Passionist priest. His original name was Domenico Barberi. He began his preaching in Italy, but became prominent in England, where he brought many Anglicans to the Catholic faith, including the future St. John Henry Newman. He was appreciated by the Popes Pius X and Leo XIII, who knew him personally when he was nuncio to Brussels. He was a man of vast learning, as seen in his many philosophical and theological works.

AUGUST 27: THE MISSIONARY TO SAMPALOC AND POLO Blessed Francisco of St. Mary Priest and Martyr Died: 1627 --- He was a Spanish Franciscan priest and martyr. He was a member of the Alcantarine branch of the Franciscans. He was sent as a missionary to the Philippines where he served in Sampaloc and Polo. He later went to Japan to preach the Gospel there. After four years, he was captured for being a Catholic priest. He and his group of 14 Christians were all sentenced to death. He was burned alive while the others were beheaded.

THE AUGUSTINIAN PROTOMARTYRS The Holy Martyrs of Gafsa --- Seven men from the monastery of Gafsa (in what is now Tunisia) who followed the Rule of St. Augustine were arrested after King Huneric banned Christianity. They were St. Bonifatius (deacon),St. Servus and St. Rusticus (subdeacons), their St. Liberatus (abbot) and St. Rogatus, St. Septimus, and St. Maximus (monks). After refusing to renounce their faith, they were beaten to death on a boat. They are not listed in the General Roman Calendar, but are honored today in the Augustinian Calendar.

AUGUST 26: AN EXILED CARMELITE MARTYR Blessed Jacques Retouret Priest and Martyr Died: 1794 --- He was a French Carmelite priest and martyr. During the anti-Catholic French Revolution, he refused the oath in support of a law that decreed the election of bishops and parish priests directly from the people. He was also accused of being part of a group of anti-revolutionary political emigrants. Arrested and sentenced along with other priests and religious, he was forced into exile. He was deported in a prison ship and died on an island.

AUGUST 26: THE SERVANT OF THE ABANDONED ELDERLY Saint Teresa of Jesus Religious Virgin and Founder Died: 1897 --- She was a Spanish nun and founder of the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly. Her original name was Teresa Jornet Ibars. She was the great-niece of Bl. Francisco Palau y Quer. Her dedication to the elderly and the sick was well-known and also the work of her sisters in Spain and later abroad. During the Spanish cholera outbreak, she did not hesitate in helping the patients. She died after suffering from tuberculosis.

AUGUST 25: APOSTLE TO THE SHUARS OF THE AMAZON Saint Maria Troncatti Religious Virgin Died: 1969 --- She was an Italian Salesian nun. She worked as a Red Cross nurse in a military hospital: an experience that will prove invaluable to her during her long missionary activity in the Amazon rainforest. While preaching the Good News, she helped the Shuar natives as a nurse, surgeon, orthopedist, dentist, and anesthetist. She also advocated for the rights of the Shuar women, especially on allowing them to freely choose who to marry.

AUGUST 25: THE PATRON SAINT OF ACTORS Saint Genesius of Rome Martyr Died: 303 --- He was a Roman martyr. He was a theatrical actor who performed in front of the emperor. He wanted to make a mockery of the baptismal ceremonies of Christians. He was sure to make viewers laugh. But during the scene, he got converted and revolted against the people who laughed delightfully. He confessed his faith. The emperor had him tortured. He was made to lie on the easel which had his ribs broken before being finally beheaded.

AUGUST 25: THE MOST CHRISTIAN KING Saint Louis IX Married Layperson and Tertiary Died: 1270 --- He was a French married layperson, Franciscan tertiary, and is the only canonized king of France. He forbade blasphemy, gambling, usury, and prostitution. He insisted that those charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty. He allowed beggars to eat from his own table. He fed 100 poor people everyday. He served the lepers. He established hospitals for the sick and blind and houses for reformed prostitutes.

AUGUST 25: THE PATRON SAINT OF ALL CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS Saint Jose Calasanz Gaston Priest and Founder Died: 1648 --- He was a Spanish priest and founder of the Order of Poor Clerics Regular of the Mother of God of the Pious Schools, known as the “Piarists.” The order has the aim of giving an education to the poorest and thus fighting illiteracy, ignorance, and crime. He also believed that education could lead the young people closer to God. He was a close friend of Galileo Galilei. Pope Pius XII declared him Patron of All Christian Schools in the world.

AUGUST 24: STABBED FOR OPPOSING COMMUNISM Blessed Miroslav Bulešić Priest and Martyr Died: 1947 --- He was a Croatian priest and martyr. He served as a parish priest and as a professor. He was a heavy critic of Communism. The government introduced civil weddings and funeral services to take people away from his parish, but the people still kept going to him and attend Mass. One day, a group of communist supporters attacked him in his residence. They pinned him on the ground and stabbed him on his neck multiple times until he died.
