OCTOBER 14: THE DESTROYER OF PAN Saint Fortunato of Todi Bishop Died: 537 --- He was an Italian bishop. St. Gregory the Great called him a man of great virtue who took great care in attending to the sick. According to legend, he saved the city of Todi from being sacked by Totila the Goth. He converted many people and showed the power of Jesus Christ over the pagan gods by destroying a temple of the god Pan (the god of the wild, shepherds, and flocks) and using the materials to build a Christian church.

OCTOBER 14: HE WAS SEALED-UP IN A WALL... ALIVE! Blessed Roman Lysko Married Priest and Martyr Died: 1949 --- He was a Ukrainian married priest from the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, a church in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. During the communist rule, he was arrested for being a priest. In jail, he was horribly tortured. According to witnesses, they heard him sing the Psalms loudly after he was tortured. The soldiers thought he went crazy. He died from starvation after he was sealed-up in the prison walls alive.

OCTOBER 14: THE PATRON OF CEMETERY KEEPERS Saint Callistus I Pope and Martyr Died: 222 --- He was our pope for 5 years. When he was a deacon, he was in-charge of a cemetery which was later named after him. It was the first land property owned by the Church. When he became pope, he pardoned all sins which included murder and adultery. He was criticized by St. Hippolytus of Rome for this seeming laxity. Callistus suffered martyrdom by being thrown into a well. He is the patron saint of cemetery keepers.

A POSSIBLE NORTH KOREAN MARTYR Servant of God Jang Agneta --- Today is the death anniversary of the Servant of God Jang Agneta or Agatha. She was a North Korean widow and oblate (lay member) of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing who is being considered as a possible martyr. She always informed the abbess of what the poor needed and provided food and goods for them. She was arrested by the communists and was later found dead with an axe wound on the back of her head.

A FORMER ATHEIST MYSTIC OF THE SUBURBS Venerable Madeleine Delbrêl --- Today is the death anniversary of the Ven. Madeleine Delbrêl. She was a French layperson. She came to the Catholic faith after a youth spent as an atheist. She became a social worker. She wrote a book that outlined in detail how lay people can be missionaries in daily life. Interestingly, She worked closely with communists (Marxists) and tried to develop a relationship with them, loving them, but rejecting their ideology.

Vatican confirms Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer. We should be thankful that the operation was successful, while recognising the seriousness of the diagnosis. The Vatican has not yet provided details of the cancer's stage or whether further treatment will be required. This is a moment to unite in prayer for the Holy Father, asking Our Lord to grant him healing, strength and a full recovery. Our Lady, Health of the Sick, pray for him.

OCTOBER 13: A CELIBATE CHRISTIAN ARISTOCRAT Saint Gerald of Aurillac Layperson Died: 909 --- He was a French layperson. He had many illnesses during childhood. His face was deformed by acne. Despite these challenges, he showed great resilience and was a model of holiness and leadership. He wanted to become a monk, but the bishop advised him to stay as a layperson because he can do more things with his position as count. He was secretly tonsured and practiced celibacy. He later distributed his wealth to the poor.

If only Catholic clergy were THIS based and powerful...This is an example of a political cartoon which was supposed to be anti-Catholic, but makes us look epic in practice. I'll be posting more of these!

THE MISSING BISHOP OF PYONGYANG Servant of God Hong Yong-ho Franciscus Borgia --- Today is the birth anniversary of the Servant of God Hong Yong-ho Franciscus Borgia. He was North Korean bishop who is being considered as a martyr. We remember him today because he has no death anniversary. He was imprisoned by the communist regime in 1949 and later disappeared. He was made first bishop of Pyongyang while he was missing. His death was finally acknowledged by the Holy See in June 2013.

ACUTIS HELPED A FILIPINA NANNY --- St. Carlo Acutis once showed his generosity to a Filipina whose family fell victim to a typhoon. Carlo was around 6 years-old at that time. One day, he learned that the Pinay nanny of his playmate was crying because her family in the Philippines lost their home due to a strong typhoon and that they didn’t have any money. When he got home, Carlo immediately went and took all his savings out of his piggy bank. His grandmother also chipped in. OCTOBER 12: THE CYBER APOSTLE OF THE EUCHARIST Saint Carlo Acutis Teenager Died: 2006 --- He was an Italian teenager. He was a normal adolescent. He loved sports, he loved to watch cartoons (like Pokemon) and, like most young people nowadays, he loved using his computer and the internet. He had a great love for the Holy Eucharist. He used a computer program to design an exhibit of Eucharistic miracles around the world. He made these “panels” available on the internet so that people can easily access them.

Pray for the Holy Father.

OCTOBER 12: AN OPPONENT OF SEMIPELAGIANISM Saint Felix IV (III) Pope Died: 530 --- He was our pope for 4 years. A specialist in the writings of St. Augustine, he used Augustine’s teachings to condemn Semipelagianism. He wrote books to settle the doctrine on sin and grace in the Catholic Church. He secured confirmation of the exemption of clerics from civil law. He obtained buildings and converted them as churches. He generally used his favored status with the Emperor Theodoric to benefit the Church.
