JULY 8: A PRIEST WHO CARRIED THE CONFESSIONAL Blessed Pierre Vigne Priest Died: 1740 --- He was a French priest and founder of the Blessed Sacrament Sisters of Valence. He became an itinerant missionary among the people. For more than 30 years, this "walker of God" journeyed on foot, on horseback, or the back of a mule through the streets to make Jesus Christ known, loved, and served. To bring the sacrament of Reconciliation to the people, he disassembled the confessional box and carried it on his shoulder.

JULY 8: MARTYRED ENEMY OF CORRUPTION Blessed Floribert Bwana Chui bin Kositi Layperson and Martyr Died: 2007 --- He was a Congolese layperson and martyr. He was a member of the Saint Egidio Community. He worked as a government employee because, as a Catholic, he wanted to help his people who were suffering due to war and corruption. One day, as dictated by his Catholic conscience, he prevented the entry of spoiled rice into his country, refusing to give in to bribery and corruption. For this, he was abducted and killed at the age of 26.

JULY 8: THE BISHOP WHO SAW JESUS IN PERSON Saint Pancratios of Taormina Bishop and Martyr Died: 1st century --- He was a bishop and martyr. According to legend, when he was a teenager, he was brought to Jerusalem by his father where he saw Jesus preach. He was later baptized by St. Peter who also ordained him as a priest and bishop. He was able to covert many people. His enemies invited him to a banquet and tried to force him to kiss a wooden idol. He made the sign of the cross over it and it shattered. They stoned him to death.

JULY 8: BRIDGE OF THE EAST AND WEST Saint Hadrianus III Pope Died: 885 --- He was our pope for 1 year and almost two months. His original name was Agapitus. Despite having been able to lead the Church for a very short time, he was able to provide two significant contributions. First, he was able to help the people who were suffering because of famine and war. Second, he tried every means possible to reconcile Rome with Constantinople. He maintained a conciliatory attitude with Patriarch Photios.

ST. FERMIN AND BULL RUNNING --- In Pamplona, Spain, the annual tradition of bull running is held during the week of the feast of their patron St. Fermin. They call the festival “Sanfermines.” The bull running involves hundreds of people running in front of angry bulls along a stretch of narrow streets of a section of the old town of Pamplona. The run ends in the Pamplona's bullring. They do this to “remember” St. Fermin who died while being chased by bulls. St. Fermin’s memorial in the Roman Martyrology is September 25, but Pamplona celebrates it on July 7.

JULY 7: THE ONLY NICARAGUAN SAINT (SO FAR) Blessed Maria Romero Meneses Religious Virgin Died: 1977 --- She was a Nicaraguan Salesian nun. She is known as “the Social Apostle of Costa Rica.” After joining the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, she was sent to the territories of Costa Rica where she worked with goodness for the education of young women, especially the poor and abandoned. She also helped the homeless in acquiring their own houses. She also spread the devotion to Mary and the Eucharist.

JULY 7: A DRUG ADDICT WHO IS A SAINT Saint Ji Tianxiang Marcus Married Layperson and Martyr Died: 1900 --- Saint Mark Ji Tianxiang was a Chinese married layperson. He was an opium addict. He struggled with his addiction for more than 30 years. He confessed this sin over and over to the point that he was denied absolution and reception of the Holy Eucharist. But despite his sickness, his faith in Christ remained strong. During the anti-Christian Boxer Rebellion, he did not deny his faith and died as a martyr for Christ.

JULY 7: ENEMY OF DISPUTES; LOVER OF PEACE Blessed Benedictus XI Pope Died: 1304 --- He was a Dominican pope who reigned for 8 months and 10 days. His original name was Nicola Boccasini. He was appreciated for his humility and his piety. He was an enemy of disputes and lover of peace. As a priest and as a pope, he was known for settling disagreements. Among the acts of his short pontificate, there was the decree which obliged every Christian to go to confession at least once a year. --- To celebrate this Blessed Pope's day, please go to confession!

JULY 7: THE FIRST ENGLISHMAN IN THE HOLY LAND Saint Willibald of Eichstatt Bishop Died: 787 --- He was an English Benedictine bishop. He was the brother of Saint Winibald and Saint Walburga. He made pilgrimages all over Europe and the Holy Land, becoming the first Englishman to have reached Palestine. He helped Saint Boniface, his uncle, in evangelizing the people. He used the knowledge he gained from his travels. He was a very successful missionary and was able to convert many people.
