Speaking on the Isha Upanishad at Oxford earlier this month, I described the ego as a coloniser whose first colony is the body itself, kept alive not out of love but out of self-interest. From the division, everything follows with the regularity of grammar. Whatever stands outside the boundary is encountered as an object; the object is assessed as material; the material is assigned a use. The river stops being a river and becomes irrigation potential, hydropower; the forest turns into timber, carbon stock, scenery, or a conservation project. None of this is greed; it is structure, which is why the ego that calls itself an environmentalist and the ego that calls itself a developer are performing one and the same operation, encountering the world as an object and assigning it a role in their own project, with only the roles differing.

4 जून को लंदन में आयोजित आचार्य प्रशांत के दूसरे सार्वजनिक सत्र में दुनिया के विभिन्न देशों से बड़ी संख्या में लोग शामिल हुए, जबकि 1 लाख से अधिक लोगों ने इसे ऑनलाइन देखा। इस सत्र में आचार्य प्रशांत ने श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता के सातवें अध्याय के चौदहवें श्लोक के माध्यम से जीवन के महत्वपूर्ण प्रश्नों पर प्रकाश डाला। उन्होंने बताया कि गीता मनुष्य को कर्तव्य सौंपने के लिए नहीं, बल्कि सभी बंधनों और कर्तव्यों से मुक्त करने के लिए है। अहंकार की कार्यप्रणाली को स्पष्ट करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि ज्ञाता को जान लेने पर उसका प्रभाव स्वतः कम होने लगता है और तब सही कर्म अपने-आप प्रस्फुटित होता है। उन्होंने कहा कि समझ के बिना प्रेम संभव नहीं है। लोगों को प्रेम और आत्म-ज्ञान से जीने का आमंत्रण देते हुए उन्होंने कहा, “जानो और जियो।”
