| 2 | Kiwi Needs Hawkish RBNZ Guidance to Overcome Bearish Positioning
Any hawkish message from New Zealandâs central bank this week will set up the kiwi to build on its gains this quarter.
While the Reserve Bank of New Zealand is almost universally expected to raise interest rates later this week, it is the path beyond that matters. The central bankâs shadow board sees the official cash rate as much as 50 basis points higher from current levels in a yearâs time. But overnight indexed swaps are factoring in a much steeper path of tightening â and the currency needs validation of that latter path to sustain its recent run of gains.
Speculative positioning in the kiwi is still deeply negative, so a hawkish message on Wednesday is likely to prompt short-covering and buoy the currency, which is among the best-performing exchange rates against the dollar this quarter. | 192 |

Goldâď¸
Gold fell below $4,450, as hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh revived expectations for an imminent interest rate hike. In his Jackson Hole address on Friday, Warsh warned that inflation is not easing significantly and reaffirmed the central bankâs commitment to bringing inflation back to its 2% target, while noting that financial conditions are not currently restrictive. Markets are now pricing in around 57% chance of a 25-basis-point Fed rate hike in September.
 Crude Oilđ˘ď¸
Crude oil climbed above $85, after the US military targeted Iranian rocket launchers preparing to deploy mines into the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first such attack in more than a month. US forces also said they are closely monitoring the waterway and remain prepared to safeguard the free flow of commerce. Â Bitcoin Bitcoin has proved to be one of Augustâs top performing assets, surging over 23% throughout the month. This was heavily accelerated by the U.S. Treasury's expansion of bond buybacks and rising federal debt surpassing $40 trillion, steering investors toward "hard assets" like gold and Bitcoin. Â
JapanđŻđľ
Japanâs 10-year government bond yield climbed to around 2.94% on Monday, moving toward 30-year highs and tracking gains in US Treasury yields, BOJ Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino said last week that the central bank remains vigilant to inflation risks and will discuss the need for further policy tightening. Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expects the BOJ to do the right thing on monetary policy when asked whether the central bank should consider consecutive interest-rate hikes to counter the weak yen.
United States đşđ¸
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Washington has penalized 60 individuals, vessels, and firms including entities in mainland China and Hong Kong involved in trading Iranian crude oil, on the other hand Trump administration slapped a 50% Section 338 tariff on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, targeting key sectors like steel, aluminum, lumber, dairy, whisky, and clothing. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a "dollar-for-dollar" strategic counter-tariff program. Set to take effect on September 8, 2026, Canada will place 15% to 50% levies on $27.6 billion of U.S. goods | 172 |

U.S. â IranđŽđˇđşđ¸
Trump said that Strait of Hormuz is open with 24 boats taken through last night, adding that Russia has behaved quiet well to do with the Strait, and he added that he doesnât want to meet donât want to meet, they do. In fact, they are begging to make a deal.
Â
Brent Oilđ˘ď¸
Brent crude slipped toward $88, Goldman Sachs said oil exports from the Persian Gulf have recovered to around two-thirds of pre-war levels amid increased flows through Hormuz. Total crude exports from the region have reportedly risen to 15-16 million barrels per day, still around 7-8 million barrels below pre-conflict levels but well above a trough of 5-6 million barrels in March. Iran and Oman also reached a revenue-sharing agreement over the strategic waterway.
Â
JapanđŻđľ
Japan's unemployment rate edged down to 2.4% in July 2026 from 2.5%, coming in below market expectations of the same level. It was the lowest reading since July 2025. The number of unemployed fell by 80 thousand to a one-year low of 1.67 million, while employment declined by 150 thousand to a four-month low of 68.31 million.
Â
Russia â UkraineđˇđşđşđŚ
Vladimir Putin said talks with Ukraine had yielded no results and that Russia was preparing to intensify the war. Ongoing Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and ports are disrupting the countryâs energy infrastructure and could constrain its ability to export crude and refined products. Still, oil prices are on track to end the week lower as markets weighed signs of diplomatic progress in the Middle East and improving supply prospects through the Strait of Hormuz.
Â
Europe đŞđş
All ECB policymakers agreed to leave rates unchanged at the July meeting, following the first-rate hike since 2023 in June, citing elevated uncertainty and the fact that the full inflationary impact of the energy shock had yet to emerge, according to the latest minutes. However, some said they would not have opposed another hike, noting that the likelihood of further tightening becoming unnecessary remained low. Policymakers saw upside risks to inflation and downside risks to growth from geopolitical developments in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war, while stressing that communication should remain clear to avoiding any pre-commitment to a September move. | 215 |
