Things to know 28-08-2026 U.S. – Iran🇮🇷🇺🇸 Trump said that Strait of Hormuz is open with 24 boats taken through last night, adding that Russia has behaved quiet well to do with the Strait, and he added that he doesn’t want to meet don’t want to meet, they do. In fact, they are begging to make a deal.   Brent Oil🛢️ Brent crude slipped toward $88, Goldman Sachs said oil exports from the Persian Gulf have recovered to around two-thirds of pre-war levels amid increased flows through Hormuz. Total crude exports from the region have reportedly risen to 15-16 million barrels per day, still around 7-8 million barrels below pre-conflict levels but well above a trough of 5-6 million barrels in March. Iran and Oman also reached a revenue-sharing agreement over the strategic waterway.   Japan🇯🇵 Japan's unemployment rate edged down to 2.4% in July 2026 from 2.5%, coming in below market expectations of the same level. It was the lowest reading since July 2025. The number of unemployed fell by 80 thousand to a one-year low of 1.67 million, while employment declined by 150 thousand to a four-month low of 68.31 million.   Russia – Ukraine🇷🇺🇺🇦 Vladimir Putin said talks with Ukraine had yielded no results and that Russia was preparing to intensify the war. Ongoing Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and ports are disrupting the country’s energy infrastructure and could constrain its ability to export crude and refined products. Still, oil prices are on track to end the week lower as markets weighed signs of diplomatic progress in the Middle East and improving supply prospects through the Strait of Hormuz.   Europe 🇪🇺 All ECB policymakers agreed to leave rates unchanged at the July meeting, following the first-rate hike since 2023 in June, citing elevated uncertainty and the fact that the full inflationary impact of the energy shock had yet to emerge, according to the latest minutes. However, some said they would not have opposed another hike, noting that the likelihood of further tightening becoming unnecessary remained low. Policymakers saw upside risks to inflation and downside risks to growth from geopolitical developments in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war, while stressing that communication should remain clear to avoiding any pre-commitment to a September move.

Things to know 27/08/2026 Japan 🇯🇵 Deputy Governor Ryozo Himinostated that the central bank needs to carry out "timely" interest rate hikes to avoid a future spike in inflation that would require abrupt tightening. U.S. shares 🇺🇸 Nvidia delivered a bullish sales outlook, signaling that artificial intelligence-driven demand could remain strong through 2028. Nvidia shares surged more than 4% following better-than-expected Q2 results and strong revenue guidance, with its outlook providing fresh evidence that spending on AI infrastructure remains robust. Salesforce also jumped nearly 13% after reporting higher-than-expected Q2 revenue, while Okta soared 20% after topping estimates and citing booming demand for agentic AI. Gold ⭐️ Gold prices fell toward $4,600, as investors assessed fresh US economic data for clues on the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate path. The PCE price index rose 0.2% in July, above expectations for a 0.1% increase, Markets are now pricing around a 60% chance of the Fed leaving rates unchanged next month, down from 64% before the data. Australia 🇦🇺 Australian dollar rose toward $0.72, extending its rally to a fresh three-month high amid growing expectations of an interest rate hike as early as next month. The shift in rate expectations followed hotter-than-expected July inflation print, which showed price pressures remained elevated and prompted several major banks to revise their RBA forecasts. National Australia Bank now expects the central bank to raise its cash rate to 4.6% at the September 28-29 meeting. Crude Oil 🛢️ Crude oil slipped below $81, amid signs of diplomatic progress in the Middle East. Iran and Oman reached an agreement over each country’s share of the Strait of Hormuz’s waters and related revenues, although Tehran cautioned that reopening the crucial waterway would require more than an agreement with Oman. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said 10 million barrels of oil had passed through Hormuz on Tuesday, while reiterating claims that mines in the waterway had been cleared.

Dollar Is Caught Between Growth and Credibility Higher real yields are giving the dollar a temporary lift as firm US data flattens the curve, though the currency is caught between resilient nominal growth and a lingering risk premium. Real yields moved higher across the curve after this morning’s data, led by the front end, with 2-year reals up roughly 4 bps. PCE was uncomfortable at the margin, while the broader activity picture remains firm enough to keep the growth side of the US exceptionalism argument alive. A rise in real yields accompanied by curve flattening and stronger data carries a very different signal from one driven by concerns over policy credibility and inflation risk. The former reinforces the carry and growth appeal of the dollar. The latter raises questions around the policy mix and weighs on the currency even as nominal yields climb. The dollar is stuck in that game of yoyo, with political concerns limiting the scope for sustained strength while robust nominal growth keeps a meaningful floor underneath it. Looking beyond the noise coming out of Treasury, real yields approaching 3% are exceptionally attractive for liability-driven participants, where the appeal of locking in long-duration real income is straightforward. For traders and bond vigilantes, the same yield can carry a very different message around term premium and inflation. That split helps explain why the long end can find demand even as the broader rates market questions where equilibrium really is.
