Religion, from a psychological point of view, regulates our emotions and actions and makes them better adjusted to deal with adversity and misfortune. When an atheist relinquishes the metaphysics of religion he unavoidably relinquishes its psychological safety net. Then he faces a grave danger; He finds himself alone in a world of fear, chaos, uncertainty, and injustice. He can no longer effectively deal with adversity, because he believes in nothing greater than him to draw strength from. And he can't draw that strength from within because we humans are too fragile and transient¹. And even if that was possible, it takes a truly exceptional human to be his own rock and church². Thereby, the atheist finds himself alone in a cruel and meaningless world. This makes them look for solace in weird places like Buddhism, stoicism, scientism, and philosophy because they are in desperate need for solace after they left religion. What makes these traditions appealing to the atheist is their secularism, or to be more specific, their possibility to be secular; Stoicism and buddhism, for example, both have a complex metaphysics imbedded in them. Yet at the same time, the psychological exercises and the methods to deal with adversity that these traditions employ can be separated to an extent from their metaphysics, and thus applied practically in one's life without necessarily adhering to their metaphysics. ¹Durkheim explained this more eloquently and in detail in his study on suicide. ²“You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church” [Matthew 16:18]
