إذا قرأ العربيُّ المعاصر نصًّا من نصوص القدماء، شعرًا كان أم نثرا، لقي أمامه ثلاثة ضروب من الكلمات العربية: كلمة يفهم معناها، وكلمة لا يفهم معناها، وكلمة يتوهّم معناها. أما التي يفهم معناها فمعروفة، وأما التي لا يفهم معناها فلهُ أن يُفتش المعاجم فيفهمها، ولكن الشرّ كله في التي يتوهم معناها، وحسبُك كلمة مثل «بَيْن» و«بانَ»، ولو قرأ العربي المعاصر بردة كعب: «بانَتْ سُعادُ فَقَلبي اليَومَ مَتبولُ» لتوهّمها انكشفت وظهرت، والصواب أنها فارقت، والبين هو الفراق، وتقول العرب: «غراب البين»، لأن الغراب عندهم يحتم بالفراق، ويسمونه حاتمًا لذلك. وهذا النوع من الكلمات التي اختلطت علينا بشكلها وأصواتها كُثُر. ومن ذلك ما كنت أحادث بهِ الأخ الأريب حيدر، إذ جرى حديثنا عن كلمة «عَير»، فلو سمعها العراقي المعاصر من غير رَويّةٍ لحسبها الغرمول، والحق أنها الحمار، وأنثاه عيرة، ولو قرأ «العِير»، لتوهّمها على ما قلنا أيضا، والصواب أنها القوافل، وقد قال الله في كتابه [يوسف: ٧٠]: ﴿ثُمَّ أَذَّنَ مُؤَذِّنٌ أَيَّتُهَا الْعِيرُ إِنَّكُمْ لَسَارِقُونَ﴾. ومن هذا الضرب كثير.
