والتِّبْر هو الذهب، وقِيلَ هو ما استُخرِجَ منه قَبلَ أَنْ يُصاغَ ويُستَعمَل. قالَ أبو فراس الحمداني:

لا عجبَ أنّ الأخَ المَوثوق والصديقَ المؤتَمَن أندرُ من الدرِّ المكنون والتِّبرِ المَدفون. فالصديقُ مَن صَدَقَك، ومَن يَصدُقُونَ مع أنفسِهم قليلٌ فما بالك بِمَن يَصدُقونَ مع خِلّانهم. ثُمّ فالثِّقَةُ تُبنى، مع الصِّدق بالقولِ والفِعل، بِحُسنِ الظنِّ، وأكثرُ الناس تُنازعُ قلوبَهم الوساوسُ والشياطين وسوء الطَّبعِ، فَتَراهم يُسيئون الظنّ بإخوانِهم لا لِمُنكَرٍ صَدَرَ منهم بل لِما رأوا في أنفسِهم من قُبحِ الخُلقِ وشَرِّ النيةِ، فتَوَهَّموا أنّ كلّ بني البشرِ خُلِقوا وجُبِلوا مِثلَهُم.
