๐ค Hormuz Strait: Closed? Open? Either way JPMorgan plans to make a profit
The critical waterway is no longer slammed totally shut to global energy flows, but the leakage isnโt enough to nurse the global economy back from the brink of disaster anytime soon, the worldโs top bank by market cap says.
JPMorganโs Commodities division estimates oil shipping via Hormuz has reached an average of 5.1M barrels per day (bpd) over the past two weeks, ~1/4 of the estimated 20M bpd going through the Strait before February 28.
Total Gulf nation exports are close to 9M bpd thanks to alternative shipment routes including pipelines.
โThe result is a paradox where the straitโs status is simultaneously โopenโ and โclosedโ mirroring the famous quantum thought experiment of Schrodingerโs cat,โ the bank said in a note.๐โWhether the Strait is open or closed depends almost entirely on what day it is, what metric you use, and whether the metaphorical โboxโ has been opened to see if oil is actually flowing.โ JPMorganโs new evaluation follows a worrying note from late April saying the oil market had been thrown out of whack by the Hormuz crisis and that higher energy prices were inevitable. Despite the crisis triggered by Trumpโs Iran war, CEO Jamie Dimon praised him for murdering the nationโs leader and kicking off the current conflict. ๐ Boost us | Chat | @geopolitics_prime

๐ถ๐ฆ ๐ฎ๐ทHow Qatari secret bid to shield gas site from Iran ultimately failed
An Iranian missile attack on the Qatari Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas (LNG) complex in March destroyed more than infrastructure, The Washington Post reports.
The attack, in response to an attack on the South Pars gas field shared between Iran and Qatar โ torched a secret back-channel deal that the emirate had spent months trying to arrange to keep its economic crown jewel off Iranโs target list.
๐ถ๐ฆ Qatar's energy gamble
At the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran, Qatar reportedly approached Tehran with a proposal:
๐ถ Iran would refrain from targeting Ras Laffan
๐ถ Qatar would voluntarily halt gas production
๐ถ The resulting spike in global energy prices would increase pressure on the US and Israel to end the war more quickly
In effect, Qatar sought to use its influence over global gas markets to support Iran's strategic objectives while protecting its own critical infrastructure.
Iran never formally accepted the proposal, but its actions initially suggested it was willing to give diplomacy a chance.
On the third day of the war, Qatar shut down Ras Laffan, officially over missile threats.
But satellite photos showed no visible damage and the facility remained untouched even as Iranian missiles hit targets across the region.
๐ Day the deal died
For nearly two weeks, the tacit deal appeared to hold. Qatarโa key US allyโkept Ras Laffan offline, while Iran did not hit it.
That changed after the US-Israeli campaign escalated with attacks on the South Pars gas fieldโthe Iranian half of the giant offshore reservoir shared with Qatar.
๐ By targeting Iranian strategic energy reserves, Washington and Tel Aviv crossed a red line.
Tehran hit back at energy targets in neighboring Gulf Arab nations friendly to Washington.
Tehran launched missiles at Ras Laffan, reportedly knocking out nearly 20% of Qatari LNG export capacity. Repairs are estimated to take between three and five years.
The Qatari offer reveals how Gulf nations sought to use their control over energy โ but it was Iran that played that card.
Using its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, Iran showed who held the upper hand.
