Until recently, specialized orthodontic, dental laboratory, and orthognathic surgical services were rarely accessible within the public healthcare sector. Today, thanks to visionary leadership and community support, SPHMMC is making these essential treatments a reality for patients who need them most. 🦷 Expanding Orthodontic & Dental Laboratory Care Former SPHMMC academic staff member, owner of Dr. Fetlework Dental Clinic, and Addis Ababa City Council member Dr. Fetlework Hailu generously donated essential dental materials and consumables valued at approximately ETB 160,000. With over 40 patients currently undergoing active orthodontic treatment, this contribution—including 40 orthodontic brackets, power chains, ligatures, handpieces, and impression materials—will directly support ongoing care. Furthermore, these supplies will bolster our newly launched Dental Laboratory Service, led by technician Mrs. Hiwot Samuel, which has already delivered approximately 22 complete and partial dentures, along with fixed dental prostheses. These vital interventions are helping restore patients' smiles, essential oral functions like eating and speech, and overall quality of life. 🏥 Advancing Maxillofacial & Orthognathic Surgery We are equally honored to receive a KLS Martin 2.0 mm Mini Module fracture fixation set donated by Dr. Tibebu Tsegga, a US-based oral and maxillofacial surgeon and former US Air Force surgeon who previously visited SPHMMC on a surgical mission. Special thanks to Dr. Adam Waksor for transporting the surgical set from the United States. This contribution significantly strengthens our institutional capacity to provide advanced orthognathic surgery for complex dentofacial deformities in the public sector. These generous acts represent far more than equipment—they are vital investments in accessible, equitable, and high-quality care for all Ethiopians. A step forward for microsurgery and limb salvage in Ethiopia 🇪🇹: SUCCESSFUL THUMB REPLANTATION! 🎉 "One patient. Many minds. Better outcome." Saving a hand. Restoring hope. Advancing microsurgery. The Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Unit of St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College's AaBET Hospital has achieved a successful replantation — a major milestone in our journey toward advanced limb salvage and microsurgical reconstruction. 🩸 THE CASE A 24-year-old right-hand-dominant wood factory worker sustained a severe occupational injury from a wood-cutting machine, resulting in traumatic amputation of the left thumb and index finger. He presented approximately 2 hours after injury. Despite significant contamination and delayed preservation of the amputated part, careful assessment demonstrated a sharp injury pattern with viable tissue and favorable reconstructive potential. ⏱️ Warm ischemia: 2 hours ❄️ Cold ischemia: 5 hours After multidisciplinary assessment and counseling, the patient was taken urgently to the operating theatre for replantation. 🔬 Through meticulous microsurgical technique, arterial and venous anastomoses were performed, and circulation was successfully restored to the replanted thumb. Currently, the replanted part remains viable with a smooth postoperative course. 🤝 TEAMWORK & SYNERGY MADE IT POSSIBLE This achievement was not the work of one person. It was the result of rapid triage, early communication, coordinated decision-making, surgical expertise, anesthesia support, nursing care, and synergy across multiple departments. We particularly acknowledge the Emergency & Critical Care Medicine team for their important role in the early recognition, rapid triage, communication, and timely escalation of this patient to the reconstructive team. Every minute matters in replantation. 🔬 A MESSAGE BEYOND THIS SINGLE CASE Multidisciplinary care. One patient; many minds; better outcomes. Through preparation, technical expertise, persistence, and teamwork, successful replantation was achieved. Their voices must go beyond being heard; they must help shape mental health policies, influence decisions, co-design services, and advocate for their rights and dignity. As health professionals, we must listen to them without judgment, challenge stigma and discrimination, protect their rights, and ensure people with lived experience are active partners in their care and in improving mental health services. We must recognize that they are experts by experience and create spaces where their perspectives are respected, and their contributions are valued to influence change.    Ethiopia’s growing number of psychiatrists offers an important opportunity to expand access to mental health care. As a clinician who has spent over a decade at the intersection of psychiatric care, academic research, and community service, I have learned that healing doesn't begin with complex prescriptions or distant theories; it begins when a human voice is truly heard. On this World Mental Health Day, with the global call "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change," we are reminded that behind every clinical diagnosis is an irreplaceable human story. In low- and middle-income settings where resources are modest but human connection is boundless, the wisdom of individuals living with mental health conditions and the devotion of their families are the most powerful catalysts for meaningful transformation. In Ethiopia, our strength has always been rooted in our communities, in the collective warmth of neighbors and the quiet resilience of caregivers. When we empower a parent caring for a child with developmental needs, dismantle the painful stigma surrounding neurodiversity, or train community leaders to provide empathetic support, we do more than deliver care, we restore dignity. Innovation in mental health does not always require high-tech infrastructure. It thrives when local evidence, compassionate science, and community collaboration converge to bridge gaps in access and ensure that no family walks the path of healing alone. Real change demands that we amplify the voices that have long been pushed into the shadows. It calls on our healthcare systems, educational spaces, and policymakers to integrate the lived realities of our people directly into care design. To every individual enduring silent psychological distress, to every parent holding hope for their child, and to every advocate fighting for equity, know that your stories are not burdens; they are the bedrock upon which a more compassionate society must be built. Let us pledge today to listen deeper, love bolder, and co-create an Ethiopia where every mind is valued, every experience is honored, and no voice goes unheard.
