SPHMMC Partners with Ethiopia Buna FC Supporters to Promote Community Health St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ethiopia Buna Football Club Supporters Association and Kuas Meda Idir to strengthen collaboration in community health promotion, voluntary blood donation, and sports-based health initiatives. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to improving community well-being through joint health promotion activities and community engagement. SPHMMC Promotes Family Planning Integration in Chronic Care Services The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Saint Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) held a workshop today to integrate family planning services into chronic medical illness clinics. The workshop gathered department heads and head nurses from Internal Medicine, Surgery, Psychiatry, and Oncology. Dr. Lemi Belay, the Academic and Medical Service Vice Provost, addressed the meeting. He emphasized the need to include family planning and preconception care in chronic disease management to improve patient outcomes and raise the quality of healthcare services. Participants discussed the crucial role of family planning in patient care. The workshop ended with a commitment to strengthen collaboration and create lasting strategies for integrating family planning services into chronic care clinics.

In addition to her academic and clinical contributions, Professor Bereket is deeply committed to community service and mentorship. She founded and leads a pediatric charity initiative at SPHMMC pediatric department, supporting vulnerable children and families, serving on NGO boards, and actively participating in medical missions. She is also engaged in public health education through mass media and community outreaches, while advocating for women’s leadership in medicine. An active member and former executive of the Ethiopian Pediatrics Society, she continues to contribute to professional development and collaboration within the medical community. Her compassion extends beyond formal settings, including offering free medical consultations to those in need. Professor  Bereket’s holistic impact—as a clinician, educator, researcher, mentor, and humanitarian—makes her promotion to full professorship both timely and richly deserved, reflecting a career dedicated to service, excellence, and lasting national impact.

Neway Tsegaye: የቅዱስ ጳውሎስ ሆስፒታልሚሊኒየም ሕክምና ኮሌጅ የማኔጅመንት ቦርድ ሰኔ 9 ቀን 2018 ዓም ባደረገው ስብሰባ የሙሉ ፕሮፌሰርነት ማዕረግ  ለዶር  በረከት ፋንታሁን አጸደቀ፡፡ የቅዱስ ጳውሎስ ሆስፒታልሚሊኒየም ሕክምና ኮሌጅ የዶር በረከት ፋንታሁንን  መረጃዎች ከገመገመ በኃላ  የሙሉ ፕሮፌሰርነት ማዕረግ ሰጥቷል፡፡ ፕሮፌሰር  በረከት ፋንታሁን ይስማው በኮሌጁ ታሪክ የመጀመሪያዋ ሴት ፕረፌሰር ሲሆኑ   በሙያቸው የህጻናት ሕክምና ስፔሻሊስት ናቸው፡፡  በሕጻናት ኢንዶክራይኖሎጂ ሕክምና ደግሞ የሰብ ስፔሻሊስት ስልጠና አላቸው፡፡ በሕክምና ትምህርት፣ በምርምር እና በጤና ሥርዓት ማጠናከር ላይ ከፍተኛ አስተዋፅኦ አበርክተዋል፡፡ በአዲስ አበባ የተወለዱት  ፕሮፌሰር  በረከት በአሁኑ ወቅት በቅዱስ ጳውሎስ ሆስፒታል ሚሊኒየም ሕክምና ኮሌጅ  በማገልገል ላይ ይገኛሉ፡፡ የመጀመሪያ የሕክምና ትምህርታቸውን በጎንደር የሕክምና ሳይንስ ኮሌጅ ያጠናቀቁ ሲሆን በአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ደግሞ በሕጻናት ሕክምና የስፔሻሊቲ ዲግሪያቸውን አግኝተዋል፡፡   በኬንያ በገርትሩድ የሕፃናት ሆስፒታል በሕፃናት ኢንዶክራይኖሎጂ ሰብስፔሻሊቲ ስልጠና ተከታትለዋል፡፡። እንዲሁም የዓለም አቀፉ የጤና አገልግሎት ጥራት ማህበር (ISQua) ፌሎው በመሆን ሰርተዋል፡፡ በቅዱስ ጳውሎስ ሆስፒታል ሚሊኒየም ሕክምና ኮሌጅ   የተመላላሽ ሕሙማን ክፍል ዳይሬክተር እና የሕጻናት ትምህርት ክፍል  ሃላፊ ሆነው አገልግለዋል፡፡  በተጨማሪም  የኤሌክትሮኒክ የሕክምና መረጃ ሥርዓት (EMR) ትግበራን በመምራት እና የሕፃናት የስኳር በሽታ መርሀግብርን  በመላ አገሪቱ በማስፋፋት  ሰርተዋል ። ፕሮፌሰር  በረከት በሕፃናት ኢንዶክራይኖሎጂ እና በሕፃናት የስኳር በሽታ ላይ ያተኮሩ በርካታ ጥናቶችን በአገር ውስጥና በዓለም አቀፍ መጽሔቶች አሳትመዋል፡፡ የምርምር ሥራቸውም  የክሊኒካል ልምምድን እና የሕዝብ ጤና ውጤቶችን በማሻሻል  አስተዋፅኦ አድርጓል። በተጨማሪም እንደ ታዋቂ ሴት ክሊኒካል ተመራማሪ እና በኢትዮጵያ ሕክምና ዘርፍ አርአያ በመሆናቸው በርካታ  ሽልማቶችን ተቀብለዋል፡፡ ከአካዳሚክና ከክሊኒካል ሥራዎቻቸው ባሻገር፣ ፕሮፌሰር  በረከት ለማህበረሰብ አገልግሎትና ለወጣት ባለሙያዎች ማብቃት ልዩ ቁርጠኝነት አላቸው። በተጨማሪም   የሕፃናት ሕክምና ክፍል ውስጥ ተጋላጭ ሕፃናትንና ቤተሰቦቻቸውን የሚደግፍ የበጎ አድራጎት  መስርተዋል፡፡ በተለያዩ መንግሥታዊ ያልሆኑ ድርጅቶች ቦርድ አባል ሆና እያገለገሉ የሚገኙ ሲሆን ፣ በሕክምና በማህበረሰብ ጤና አገልግሎት ሥራዎችም በንቃት ይሳተፋሉ፡፡ እንዲሁም በሕክምና ዘርፍ የሴቶችን አመራር በመደገፍ ይታወቃሉ፡፡ የኢትዮጵያ የሕፃናት ሕክምና ማህበር ንቁ አባልና የቀድሞ የአስፈጻሚ ኮሚቴ አባል በመሆን ለሙያዊ እድገት አስተዋፅኦ እያበረከቱ ይገኛሉ፡፡ ፐሮፌሰር  በረከት ፋንታሁን እንደ ሐኪም፣ መምህር ፣ ተመራማሪ፣ አማካሪ እና ሰብዓዊ አገልጋይ ያላቸው  ሁለንተናዊ አስተዋፅኦ  ወደ ሙሉ ፕሮፌሰርነት ከፍ እንዲሉ  የሚያስችላቸው በቂ መሠረት ነው፡፡ ይህም  ለላቀ ሙያዊ ብቃት እና ለሕዝብ አገልግሎት የተሰጠ ረጅም ዘመናዊ አስተዋፅአቸውን  ያንፀባርቃል።     The Managing Board of Saint Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC), at its regular meeting held today, June 16, 2026, approved the promotion of Dr. Bereket Fantahun Yismaw to the rank of Full Professor. After carefully reviewing her academic, clinical, research, and service achievements, the Board endorsed her promotion in recognition of her outstanding contributions to medical education, patient care, research, and institutional leadership. With this promotion, Dr. Bereket becomes the first woman in the history of SPHMMC to attain the rank of Full Professor. Professor Bereket Fantahun Yismaw is a distinguished pediatric endocrinologist, academician, and healthcare leader whose career exemplifies a deep commitment to advancing child health, medical education, and health system strengthening in Ethiopia. Born in Addis Ababa, she currently serves as a Consultant pediatrician at Saint Paul’s Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC), where she has earned recognition for excellence in clinical care, academic leadership, and transformative service. Her academic journey spans leading institutions, including Gondar College of Medical Sciences and Addis Ababa University, with subspecialty training in pediatric endocrinology from Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital in Kenya. As a Fellow of the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQUA), she actively promotes quality improvement and innovation in healthcare delivery. At SPHMMC, Professor Bereket has held key leadership roles, including Outpatient Department Director and Department Chair, where she has led major institutional advancements such as the implementation of electronic medical records and the expansion of childhood diabetes programs nationwide. Her influence extends beyond the institution, contributing to national health policy, clinical standards, and quality improvement initiatives across Ethiopia. A prolific researcher, Professor Bereket has published extensively in national and international journals, with a focus on pediatric endocrinology and childhood diabetes. Her work has significantly contributed to improving clinical practice and public health outcomes. She has received multiple prestigious awards recognizing her as a leading female clinical researcher and a role model in Ethiopian medicine.

He has served his country for over 20 years at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) and Jimma University (JU), contributing extensively to academic, clinical, and research activities. Professor Solomon has trained, mentored, and supervised undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD students, guiding numerous research theses. Throughout his academic and research career, he has published more than 56 articles in reputable international journals and has secured six major competitive international research grants. Prof. Solomon has also played a pivotal role in strengthening research and health service infrastructures. He has established Millennium Journal of Health, the first scholarly journal in SPHMMC, Infectious Diseases Research and Molecular Laboratory (IDReaM Lab) with integrated bio-banking system, and digitalizing hospital microbiology service laboratory data management system through a DHIS2 based platform. Recently, Prof. Solomon Ali received national recognition from the Federal Ministry of Health of Ethiopia as the recipient of the 2026 Award for outstanding professional contribution in the health sector.

The Department of Neurosurgery at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College conducted its Annual Audit Report Review, presenting key service activities, achievements, challenges, and opportunities for improvement. The audit was followed by a detailed discussion with the hospital’s senior management team, focusing on strengthening neurosurgical services and improving patient care. A clear way forward was outlined to advance major subspecialty areas, including pediatric neurosurgery, skull base surgery, vascular neurosurgery, and spine neurosurgery.

SPHMMC Honors Professor Mark Topazian for Dedicated service St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) has honored Professor Mark Topazian for his more than eight years of volunteer service and outstanding contribution to strengthening Gastroenterology and Endoscopy care in Ethiopia. Speaking at an appreciation ceremony, SPHMMC Provost Dr. Muluken Tesfaye praised Professor Mark for his unwavering commitment to improving clinical services, medical education,research, mentorship, and specialist training at the College. Professor Mark, a renowned gastroenterologist and Yale School of Medicine graduate, has over three decades of experience in advanced endoscopy, gastrointestinal cancers, biliary tract diseases, and pancreatic disorders. Through his volunteer service, he has played a vital role in enhancing patient care and building local expertise in the field. In recognition of his dedication SPHMMC leadership and the Department of Gastroenterology presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation. The ceremony was attended by Vice provosts and senior management members and department heads, and staff members of the Gastroenterology Department.

ከጤና ሚኒስቴር የተሠጠ መግለጫ በአፍሪካ ስለተከሰተው ኢቦላ ቫይረስ በሽታ እና በኢትዮጵያ እየተደረጉ ያሉ የቅድመ ዝግጅት ስራዎች ግንቦት 17 ፣ 2018 ዓ.ም የዓለም ጤና ድርጅት (WHO) በግንቦት 09 ፣ 2018 ዓ.ም ባወጣው መግለጫ በዲሞክራቲክ ሪፐብሊክ ኦፍ ኮንጎ (DRC) እና በዩጋንዳ በቡንዲቡግዮ (Bundibugio) ቫይረስ ዝርያ የሚመጣ የኢቦላ ቫይረስ በሽታ መከሰቱን ያሳወቀ ሲሆን እስከ ትላንት ግንቦት 16፣ 2018 ድረስ በእነዚሁ ሀገራት በአጠቃላይ ከ101 በላይ የሚሆኑ በላቦራቶሪ የተረጋገጡ ታማሚዎች እና ከ900 በላይ ንክኪ ያላቸው ተጠርጣሪዎች የህክምና ክትትል ላይ ይገኛሉ። የኢቦላ ቫይረስ በሽታ ከፍተኛ የስርጭት እና የሞት ምጣኔ ያለው በሽታ ሲሆን ከሰው ወደ ሰው በንክኪ በቀላሉ ይተላለፋል። እስከዛሬ ድረስ በሃገራችን ኢትዮጵያ ምንም አይነት በኢቦላ ቫይረስ በሽታ የተጠረጠረ ወይም የታመመ ሰው አልተገኘም። ምንም እንኳን በሽታው ከተገኘባቸው አገራት ጋር ቀጥተኛ የድንበር ግንኙነት ባይኖረንም የበሽታውን አደገኛነት በመገንዘብ የዓለም ጤና ድርጅት (WHO) እና የአፍሪካ በሽታ ቁጥጥርና መከላከል ማዕከል (Africa CDC) የወረርሽኙን መከሰት ይፋ ካደረገበት ጊዜ ጀምሮ የጤና ሚኒስቴር ከኢትዮጵያ የሕብረተሰብ ጤና ኢንስቲትዩት ጋር በመተባበር ፦ - በሁሉም አለም አቀፍ የየብስ መግቢያ እና መውጫ ኬላዎች የልየታ እና የቅኝት ስራዎች በማጠናከር ፣ - በአለም አቀፍ አየር ማረፊያዎች የተጠናከረ ክትትል በማድረግ ፣ - የጤና ተቋማት ዝግጁ በማድረግ እንዲሁም የላቦራቶሪ አቅምን በማሳደግ - እንዲሁም አስፈላጊው የህክምና ግብአት አቅርቦት ላይ የተጠናከረ የቅድመ ዝግጅት ስራዎችን እያከናወነ ይገኛል።
