Arjun: "Madhav, I am suffocating tonight. The wait for this result is tearing my mind apart. Every time I look at my parents' hopeful eyes, my chest tightens with the sheer terror of disappointing them. The stress is so deep, I feel like I am physically breaking. Am I too weak for this path?" Krishna: "Partha, you are not weak; you are simply trying to carry a mountain that was never meant for your shoulders. You are carrying the weight of your family's dreams, the fear of society's judgment, and the terror of an unknown future. That is not your Karma. Your only duty was the effort you gave in that exam hall. You are terrified because you love your family so deeply, but remember—they love you, not a rank. A piece of paper cannot measure the purity of your sacrifice. Breathe, my friend. Let the tears fall if they must, but do not let the fear of tomorrow steal your right to exist peacefully tonight. You are held by the universe. Surrender the burden."

🔆 IMI-Resistant Mustard Hybrids 📍 Why in Focus? ✅ India is set to begin large-scale cultivation of Imidazolinone-Resistant (IMI-resistant) mustard hybrids to improve productivity and tackle weed infestation in mustard cultivation. 📍 Background ✅ Mustard is one of India’s major oilseed crops. ✅ India imported around 16 million tonnes of edible oil, worth nearly ₹1.6 lakh crore in 2024–25, highlighting the need to boost domestic oilseed production. 📍 About IMI-Resistant Mustard Hybrids ✅ Developed through mutation breeding, which selects and preserves naturally occurring beneficial mutations. ✅ Based on mutation in the Acetolactate Synthase (ALS) enzyme, essential for plant growth. ✅ In normal plants, Imidazolinone (IMI) herbicides inhibit the ALS enzyme, leading to plant death. ✅ In IMI-resistant hybrids, the mutated ALS enzyme prevents herbicide binding, allowing the crop to survive while weeds are eliminated. 📍 AdvantagesEffective control of Orobanche (Phelipanche), a parasitic weed that attaches to mustard roots and absorbs water and nutrients. ✅ Reduces dependence on manual weeding, lowering labour costs. ✅ Improves crop productivity and farm efficiency. ✅ Supports higher domestic edible oil production and import substitution. 📍 Hybrids vs Genetically Modified (GM) CropsHybrid Crops • Produced through cross-breeding genetically distinct parent plants. • Combine desirable traits naturally. • Do not involve genetic engineering. ✅ Genetically Modified (GM) Crops • Developed through direct insertion or modification of genes using biotechnology. • Example: Bt Cotton, GM Mustard. • Subject to stringent biosafety and environmental regulations. 📍 UPSC Prelims PointerMutation breeding induces or selects naturally occurring genetic mutations to develop improved crop varieties and is distinct from genetic modification, which involves direct gene manipulation. 📍 UPSC Mains Practice Question “Improving oilseed productivity is crucial for India’s edible oil security. Discuss the significance of mutation breeding technologies such as IMI-resistant mustard hybrids and distinguish them from genetically modified crops.” (GS-III | 15 Marks | 250 Words) #GS3 #prelims #science_technology #science_and_technology Join https://t.me/PIB_UPSC https://t.me/upsc_science_and_technology
