— الأدب الصغير لعبدِ الله بن المُقَفَّع

رأسُ الذنوبِ الكَذِب: هو يؤسِّسُها وهو يَتَفَقَّدُها ويُثَبِّتُها. ويَتلون ثلاثةَ ألوان: بالأُمنيةِ والجُّحودِ والجَدَل. يَبدو لصاحبه بالأُمنِيَةِ الكاذبة فيما يُزَيِّنُ له من الشهواتِ فيشجِّعُه عليها بأنّ ذلك سَيَخفى. فإذا ظَهَرَ عليه قابَلَه بالجُّحودِ والمُكابَرَة، فإنْ أعياهُ ذلك خَتَمَ بالجَّدَل، فخاصَمَ عنِ الباطِلِ وَوَضَعَ له الحُجَجَ والتَمَسَ به التَّثَبُّتَ وكابَرَ به الحقَّ حتى يكونَ مُسارِعًا للضلالةِ ومُكابِرًا بالفواحِشِ.

حَياةُ الشيطانِ تَركُ العِلم، وروحه وجَسَدُه الجَّهل، ومَعدِنُه في أهلِ الحِقد والقَساوة، ومَثواه في أهلِ الغَضَب، وعَيشُه في المُصارَمة، ورَجاؤه في الإصرارِ على الذّنوب.

كان يُقال أنّ الله تعالى قد يأمرُ بالشيء ويَبتلي بثَقلِه، وينهى عن الشيء ويَبتَلي بشهوتِه. فإذا كُنتَ لا تعملُ من الخير إلا ما اشتَهَيتَه ولا تَتركُ من الشَّرِّ إلا ما كرِهتَه، فقد أطلَعتَ الشيطانَ على عَورَتِك وأمكَنتَه من رُمَّتِك. فأوشَكَ أنْ يَقتَحِمَ عليك فيما تُحِب من الخير فيُكَرِّهَه إليك، وفيما تكره من الشر فَيُحَبِّبَه إليك.
