#outstanding DOROTHY, like Blondie and DAUGHTRY before them, is a band, not a person. Yet it's clear that Dorothy Martin (born April 11, 1986, in Budapest, Hungary, as Dorothy Martin Valentine) is the driving force behind this Los Angeles quartet: not only is she the namesake, but she's also the singer and star around whom the rest of the band revolves. Signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation, this modernized blues-rock band (they balance the electronica of the Black Keys with the powerful vocals of Adele) rose to prominence in the mid-2010s, and their 2015 digital EP served as a teaser for their 2016 full-length album, ROCKISDEAD. The band continued to refine its sound in subsequent releases, such as 28 Days in the Valley (2018), the transformative Gifts from the Holy Ghost (2022), and the inspiring The Way (2025). #oustanding Frank Beard. ZZ Top's drummer.Frank Lee Beard (June 11, 1949 – August 17, 2026) was an American musician, best known as the longtime drummer of the legendary rock band ZZ Top. Ironically, despite his last name and his bandmates' famous facial hair, he was known to only sport a mustache. Frank was born in Frankston, Texas, which is also interesting. He played in several local bands, including The Cellar Dwellers and American Blues. In late 1969, he formed ZZ Top with Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of ZZ Top in 2004. He died in August 2026 at the age of 77 while in hospice care in Texas. In 1969, guitarist Billy Gibbons formed ZZ Top in Houston. Beard was the first to join him, and he subsequently introduced Dusty Hill to Gibbons to complete the classic power trio. Beard's unflashy but impeccably timed drumming anchored the band's raw, Texas-boogie breakthrough albums in the 1970s, such as Tres Hombres and Fandango! In 1983, ZZ Top transformed into global pop-culture superstars with the multi-platinum album Eliminator. Beard seamlessly integrated electronic sequencers and synthesizers into his drumming style, defining the slick sound of 1980s rock. Until Dusty Hill's death in 2021, ZZ Top held the record for the longest-running popular music lineup with completely unchanged members. Following the band's massive success in the 1970s, Beard struggled heavily with substance abuse. The band went on a three-year hiatus while Beard entered a rehabilitation program and successfully achieved long-term sobriety. Beard was an exceptionally skilled golfer, holding a "scratch" (zero handicap) rating and regularly playing in local tournaments. He lived at his "Top 40 Ranch" in Richmond. He was married to Debbie Meredith from 1982 until his passing, and the couple had three children. Frank Beard passed away peacefully at his Texas ranch on August 17, 2026, at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most reliable and influential timekeepers in rock history. Frank Beard's legacy is built on his impeccable sense of timing and deep-rooted blues rhythm. He prioritized songwriting over flashy showmanship, creating a signature sound that made ZZ Top instantly recognizable. Drumming Style and Technique - Master of the Texas Shuffle: Beard became famous for his smooth, natural playing of the "Texas Shuffle". While traditional shuffles are played on ride cymbals, his technique often shifted the rhythm of the shuffle to the snare drum while maintaining steady quarter notes on the hi-hat. His performance on "La Grange" is widely considered the definitive masterclass of the style. Minimalist pocket - he deliberately avoided overplaying and long drum solos. Maintaining a tight and economical pocket, it left vital musical space for Billy Gibbons' heavy guitar riffs and Dusty Hill's driving basslines. Seamless Modern Adaptation - In the 1980s, as music moved into the synth-heavy era, Beard effortlessly integrated electronic drum triggers and pads. He perfectly combined organic acoustic power with mechanical electronic precision on mega-hits like “Legs” and “Sharp Dressed Man.” Drummer Frank Beard's highlights: Bass drums. Dual 22" x 18" bass drums. For large arena tours, his technician positioned them ten feet apart at the front, which required Beard to use remote slave pedals to play them. A mixture of standard and custom "power sizes". He was known to use special double-headed toms up to 28 inches deep to achieve an impressive stage presence. A dedicated user of the Paiste 2002 series cymbals, Beard consciously favored the smaller cymbals because their bright, punchy frequencies could easily cut through massive stadium speaker mixes. Beard early on popularized the use of Pollard Syndrum CM electronic pads (especially heard during the bridge of "Cheap Sunglasses"), later replacing them with Simmons pads in the mid-'80s.

#bluesrock 2015. There wasn't a single historical shift or supernatural event that made 2015 uniquely "special" for blues-rock, but it was a noticeably strong year for the genre. It featured acclaimed releases from genre icons alongside striking contributions from contemporary figures. Blues pioneer Buddy Guy released his acclaimed album, "Born to Play Guitar," while veterans like Walter Trout delivered powerful work. Gary Clark Jr., Samantha Fish, and Left Lane Cruiser maintained a vibrant and incisive sound with new recordings and extensive touring. Meanwhile, trade publications continued to cover the vibrant underground and independent scene of contemporary blues-rock bands, keeping guitar-driven roots music alive. Let’s take a look back at what was played on our main channel of 50 Shades of Blues Rock in August 2023 - specifically, which blues rock hits from 2021 (5 years ago) were featured there 3 years awhile back. “Toxic blues-rock” is, first and foremost, a lyrical theme within blues-rock that focuses primarily on toxic love, abusive relationships, and destructive behavior. In terms of subgenres, this often includes “Dirty Blues,” “Sludgy Blues,” and even “Slime Rock” - an old-school, raw style of blues rock that focuses on taboo topics. The theme itself is borrowed from Britney Spears’ hit “Toxic” and the literal names of bands or songs: there are local bands called Toxic Blues, and albums such as *Toxic Waste Blues* by Corrosive Elements. This is far from Acid Rock. Acid rock is a historically established and legitimate musical subgenre, whereas “toxic blues rock” is not. Nevertheless, they share very close musical origins. “Toxic” blues rock is descriptive slang, whereas acid rock is an established subgenre encompassing a heavy, loud, improvisation-heavy variant of 1960s psychedelic rock. The musical foundation is closely tied to traditional 12-bar blues progressions and rhythms. It combines the raw energy of garage punk with long, unstructured trance-like jams. Yes, acid rock is heavily influenced by classic blues and hard rock. Key artists include Aerosmith, Gary Moore, and Jack White (depending on the context), as well as Jimi Hendrix, Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, and Jefferson Airplane. Overlap: Heavy Psych and Proto-Metal. The reason these two concepts can be confused is that acid rock evolved directly from blues rock. In the late 1960s, bands took traditional heavy blues rock (such as Cream or early Led Zeppelin), cranked up the volume, added extreme fuzz distortion, and turned short blues songs into 15-minute trippy improvisations. As part of the Toxic Blues Rock project, we plan to release several episodes featuring songs that sound distinctly “toxic” - they often sound heavy, distorted, and sometimes overwhelming or intensely psychedelic. Each episode will feature 50 drawn-out blues rock tracks lasting 5½ minutes or longer. TTL is 1 month. The year 2000 marked a turning point for blues-rock ballads, marking a departure from the overly polished, bombastic "power ballads" of the 1980s and '90s, giving way to a raw, minimalist, and deeply emotional sound. The genre entered the new millennium blending timeless roots blues with modern production and elements of alternative rock. Instead of relying heavily on massive synthesizers and "walls of sound," 2000 ballads favored raw acoustic guitars, warm tube amps, and open vocals. Lyrics moved beyond the glamorous, theatrical heartache of previous decades, focusing on darker, more realistic themes such as psychological struggle, isolation, and raw vulnerability. Artists actively blended the classic, structural "slow" blues structure with elements of the garage rock, grunge, and neo-soul revivals. This shift can be heard in three major movements that converged at the turn of the century—the garage rock and roots music revivals. Bands like The White Stripes released De Stijl in June 2000, bringing a thoroughly primitive, fiery approach to blues ballads. Legendary figures returned to the studio with modern, aggressive blues textures. R.L. Burnside released I Wish I Was in Heaven Sitting Down (2000), using loops and dark, modern backdrops to create mesmerizing, slow-tempo masterpieces. Supergroups and mainstream rock bands began incorporating blues elements into their slower tracks. Songs like Creed's "With Arms Wide Open" (2000) dominated the charts, combining massive, soaring rock structures with bluesy chord progressions. Blues-rock guitar of the 2000s was defined by a peculiar paradox: it combined primitive, raw technique with powerful modern amplification. Guitarists abandoned the ultra-fast, clean picking of the late '90s in favor of a more aggressive, deeply expressive approach. Bending strings beyond the pitch (for example, by a minor third instead of a whole step) to simulate a wailing vocal effect. Microbending on minor-third and flat-fifth intervals to create instant harmonic tension. Striking a fretted note while simultaneously bending a string lower to the same pitch creates a dense, chorus-like wall of sound. Active use of open G (D-G-D-G-B-D) and open D (D-A-D-F#-A-D) for powerful, resonant chord resonance. Playing acoustic guitars with electromagnetic soundhole pickups connected directly to distorted tube amps. Microtonal slides allowed for slow transitions to chords rather than playing them cleanly, emphasizing the physical movement across the fretboard. Analog fuzz overdrive relied heavily on vintage fuzz pedals (such as the Big Muff or Fuzz Face) pushed to their limits. Using extreme amp volume to create controlled, sing-song feedback during slow, melodic passages became common. Using the wah-wah pedal incredibly slowly to shape the vocal tone of a note, rather than using it for rhythmic funk patterns, became common. The heavy fingerpicking is also clearly evident here: abandoning the pick and flicking the strings with your fingertips for a sharper, more percussive snap.
