| 2 | An observation of what has unfolded so far.
Hours before the latest round of U.S. war of aggression against Iran resumed, Kazakhstan appeared to sense what was coming. Rather than hesitate, it signed a 27-year agreement with Iran to develop a terminal at Bandar Abbas, precisely the port that would be struck only hours later.
If they believed a major escalation was imminent and still moved ahead, that decision says a great deal.
The Islamabad Memorandum was widely celebrated as the end of the war. I don't believe anyone sitting at that table truly thought it was. Well, neither did we as observers or direct impacted party in the region.
What matters is not what was signed, but what each actor did during the pause.
Iran moved immediately to export roughly 40 million barrels of oil. They sold it at 20% premium to buyers who'd been waiting for months. So the Treasury refills with around $1 billion. So, the MoU was oxygen for Iran.
Then America reloaded. The Pentagon had burned through a third of its Tomahawks in the first round. The pause was part of the supply chain. Three weeks to refill the magazine right before swinging back again, this time with pre-announced war crimes.
Then, Turkey hosted a NATO summit and Turkish President Erdogan walked out saying, Trump personally promised him five F-35 fighter jets, which Turkey has been waiting on since 2019, when Trump expelled them from the program because they bought Russian air defense systems.
China and Pakistan quietly reinforced their role as indispensable mediators for the next phase. Kazakhstan secured a long-term strategic investment while others were still focused on diplomacy.
Everyone used the pause. No one truly used it for "peace".
The memorandum did not fail. It accomplished exactly what each party needed it to accomplish: time. Time to rearm, reposition, replenish resources, secure economic interests and prepare for the next round.
That is why I do not see this conflict as a war that ends. I see it as a war that pauses on all fronts.
Each ceasefire becomes a strategic intermission rather than an actual political resolution. Each agreement buys time instead of trust. And each successive round leaves all sides more deeply trapped in a cycle of escalation.
If this pattern continues, I believe this will not be the last memorandum. There will likely be another, and perhaps another after that. But unless something fundamentally changes, each pause will simply lay the groundwork for an even more dangerous confrontation.
My assessment is that we are not watching a conflict winding down. We are watching one climbing a staircase, in a slow agonizing fashion. Agonizing for folks who lost their livelihoods for destruction or occupation, folks who are still displaced and folks who are still dieing or losing loved ones in these on-again off-again rounds.
If the current trajectory holds, I would not be surprised if two more major rounds unfold before the middle of 2027, bringing the region to a point where escalation may become extremely difficult to reverse.
That is, of course, only my reading of the strategic pattern so far. Time will tell whether that assessment proves correct. | 108 |

The body of medical official Mamoun Talal Kaheel, 44, arrived yesterday at the National Hospital in Suwayda, after he was assassinated on July 12, 2026, while on an official mission to Damascus to collect salaries for staff of the Suwayda Health Directorate. He was killed on the Damascus–Suwayda road.
The “Ministry of Interior” of the #STG had issued a fabricated statement (not the first time) claiming that the victim was killed when an explosive device detonated in his car as he allegedly attempted to plant it on the Damascus–Suwayda road. After official statements confirmed that the victim had been on a mission to collect salaries and worked for the Suwayda Health Directorate, the ministry quickly deleted its statement without offering any explanation.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Interior led by the Al-Qaeda terrorist Anas Al-Khatab (a.k.a. Abu Ahmad Hudud) has repeatedly issued fabricated statements fabricating charges against people unrelated to the accusations made against them, as for example what happened with psychiatrist Ghassan Youssef Ali, who was accused of trafficking organs from detainees, despite being a psychiatrist with no surgical training.
